Article Synopsis
  • Functional neurological disorder (FND) is a condition with both physical and mental symptoms, and a new phenotype called neuroconnective endophenotype (NEP) has been linked to anxiety and joint hypermobility.
  • A study involving 27 FND patients and 27 healthy controls revealed that FND patients demonstrated greater sensory sensitivity, higher rates of hypermobility, more psychiatric and physical comorbidities, and more anxiety-related symptoms.
  • The findings suggest that the NEP could help categorize FND patients, offering a better understanding of their complex physical and mental health issues.

Effect of familial clustering in the genetic screening of 235 French ALS families.

J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry

May 2021

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department, Université Francois-Rabelais de Tours, Tours, Centre-Val de Loire, France.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to investigate how the familial clustering and symptoms of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) cases could help identify the disease's genetic causes.
  • Researchers analyzed genetic mutations in 235 French families with familial ALS to find connections between genealogy and the disease's characteristics.
  • Findings indicated that specific genetic mutations were linked to the number of affected family generations, suggesting that understanding family history and symptoms could guide targeted genetic testing for ALS.

, the causative agent of the most important livestock disease in Africa, expresses specific surface proteins involved in its parasitic lifestyle. Unfortunately, the complete repertoire of such molecules is far from being deciphered. As these membrane components are exposed to the host environment, they could be used as therapeutic or diagnostic targets.

Floral traits and pollination ecology of European Arum hybrids.

Oecologia

Hybridisation is common in plants and can affect the genetic diversity and ecology of sympatric parental populations. Hybrids may resemble the parental species in their ecology, leading to competition and/or gene introgression; alternatively, they may diverge from the parental phenotypes, possibly leading to the colonisation of new ecological niches and to speciation. Here, we describe inflorescence morphology, ploidy levels, pollinator attractive scents, and pollinator guilds of natural hybrids of Arum italicum and A.

In this study, the complete mitogenome sequence of largescale mullet (Teleostei: Mugilidae) has been sequenced by the next-generation sequencing method. The assembled mitogenome, consisting of 16,832 bp, had the typical vertebrate mitochondrial gene arrangement, including 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs, two ribosomal RNAs genes, and a non-coding control region of D-loop. D-loop which has a length of 1094 bp is located between tRNA-Pro and tRNA-Phe.

Oxygen isotope ratios from fish otoliths are used to discriminate marine stocks and reconstruct past climate, assuming that variations in otolith δ18O values closely reflect differences in temperature history of fish when accounting for salinity induced variability in water δ18O. To investigate this, we exploited the environmental and migratory data gathered from a decade using archival tags to study the behaviour of adult plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.) in the North Sea.

Maternal inflammation during pregnancy is associated with the later development of cognitive and behavioral impairment in the offspring, reminiscent of the traits of schizophrenia or autism spectrum disorders. Hippocampal long-term potentiation and long-term depression of glutamatergic synapses are respectively involved in memory formation and consolidation. In male rats, maternal inflammation with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) led to a premature loss of long-term depression, occurring between 12 and 25 postnatal days instead of after the first postnatal month, and aberrant occurrence of long-term potentiation.

This paper proposes a closed-loop optimal control model predicting changes between in-phase and anti-phase postural coordination during standing and related supra-postural activities. The model allows the evaluation of the influence of body dynamics and balance constraints onto the adoption of postural coordination. This model minimizes the instantaneous norm of the joint torques with a controller in the head space, in contrast with classical linear optimal models used in the postural literature and defined in joint space.

Although the structure and dynamics of planktonic viruses in freshwater and seawater environments are relatively well documented, little is known about the occurrence and activity of these viruses in estuaries, especially in the tropics. Viral abundance, life strategies, and morphotype distribution were examined in the Bach Dang Estuary (Vietnam) during the dry season in 2009. The abundance of both viruses and their prokaryotic hosts decreased significantly from upstream to downstream, probably as the result of nutrient dilution and osmotic stress faced by the freshwater communities.

GeneMining: identification, visualization, and interpretation of brain ageing signatures.

Transcriptomic technologies are promising tools for identifying new genes involved in cerebral ageing or in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. These technologies produce massive biological data, which so far are extremely difficult to exploit. In this context, we propose GeneMining, a multidisciplinary methodology, which aims at developing new strategies to analyse such data, and to design interactive tools to help biologists to identify, visualize and interpret brain ageing signatures.
