During the COVID-19 health emergency, healthcare professionals faced several ethical demanding job stressors, becoming at particular risk of moral distress. To date, only a few scales have been developed to evaluate moral distress among frontline professionals working in contact with COVID-19 patients. Moreover, although many healthcare professionals from various disciplines were converted to COVID-19 patient care, no study has yet analyzed whether the resulting change in duties might represent a risk factor for moral distress.

Obesity is a global health challenge that warrants effective treatments to avoid its multiple comorbidities. Bariatric surgery, a cornerstone treatment to control bodyweight excess and relieve the health-related burdens of obesity, can promote accelerated bone loss and affect skeletal strength, particularly after malabsorptive and mixed surgical procedures, and probably after restrictive surgeries. The increase in bone resorption markers occurs early and persist for up to 12 months or longer after bariatric surgery, while bone formation markers increase but to a lesser extent, suggesting a potential uncoupling process between resorption and formation.

  • The study aimed to investigate the role of thyroid function, specifically TSH levels, in predicting consciousness recovery in patients with disorders of consciousness (DoC) due to acquired brain injury (ABI).
  • Researchers analyzed data from 151 patients over a 6-month rehabilitation program, finding that lower baseline TSH levels and greater increases in TSH during rehabilitation were linked to better outcomes in DoC.
  • The results suggest that TSH could be a potential biomarker for monitoring DoC progression, whereas changes in fT4 weren't as impactful on DoC recovery but were associated with improvements in functional disability and cognitive abilities.

Computer-Assisted Assessment of the Interaction Between Arousals, Breath-by-Breath Ventilation, and Chemical Drive During Cheyne-Stokes Respiration in Heart Failure Patients.

Front Physiol

February 2022

Laboratory for the Study of Ventilatory Instability, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Montescano Institute - IRCCS, Istituti Clinici Scientifici Maugeri, Montescano, Italy.

Transient increases in ventilation induced by arousal from sleep during Cheyne-Stokes respiration in heart failure patients are thought to contribute to sustaining and exacerbating the ventilatory oscillation. The only possibility to investigate the validity of this notion is to use observational data. This entails some significant challenges: (i) accurate identification of both arousal onset and offset; (ii) detection of short arousals (<3 s); (iii) breath-by-breath analysis of the interaction between arousals and ventilation; (iv) careful control for important confounding factors.

Face masks are effective at limiting contagion of the coronavirus. However, adherence to face mask use among the older adult population is often unsatisfactory due to cognitive impairment, misconceptions, and difficulty in retrieving face masks. This brief note provides healthcare professionals with simple suggestions about how to improve face mask adoption in the older adults, in particular if they suffer from mild cognitive impairment.

During an acute cardiac event, Takotsubo Syndrome (TTS) and Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) apparently share very similar clinical characteristics. Since only a few inconsistent studies have evaluated the psychological features that characterize these different patients, the aim of the present explorative research was to investigate if post-recovery TTS and ACS patients present different psychological profiles. We also investigated whether the occurrence of acute psychological stressful episodes that had occurred prior to the cardiac event could be found in either syndrome.

Interaction Between Arousals and Ventilation During Cheyne-Stokes Respiration in Heart Failure Patients: Insights From Breath-by-Breath Analysis.

Front Med (Lausanne)

December 2021

Laboratory for the Study of Ventilatory Instability, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Montescano Institute - IRCCS, Istituti Clinici Scientifici Maugeri, Montescano, Italy.

Arousals from sleep during the hyperpneic phases of Cheyne-Stokes respiration with central sleep apnea (CSR-CSA) in patients with heart failure are thought to cause ventilatory overshoot and a consequent longer apnea, thereby sustaining and exacerbating ventilatory instability. However, data supporting this model are lacking. We investigated the relationship between arousals, hyperpnea and post-hyperpnea apnea length during CSR-CSA.
