Gastric cancer (GC) is a common cancer worldwide. Therefore, searching for effective treatments is essential, and drug repositioning can be a promising strategy to find new potential drugs for GC therapy. For the first time, we sought to identify molecular alterations and validate new mechanisms related to Mebendazole (MBZ) treatment in GC cells through transcriptome analysis using microarray technology.

Modern management of distant metastases from head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

Curr Opin Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg

November 2024

Unit of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, ASST Spedali Civili of Brescia.

Article Synopsis
  • Distant metastases in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) occur in 4-26% of patients and significantly lower survival rates, necessitating a comprehensive, multidisciplinary treatment approach.
  • Accurate detection and staging are crucial for prognosis, with oligometastatic patients (up to 5 distant metastases) potentially benefiting from surgery or stereotactic radiotherapy, while polymetastatic patients need systemic therapies.
  • The pattern of metastases influences survival outcomes, highlighting the importance of individualized treatment strategies for patients with distant metastases from HNSCC.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) cell modeling is crucial to understanding and optimizing solar energy systems. While the single-diode model (PVSDM) is commonly used, the double-diode model (PVDDM) offers improved accuracy at a reasonable level of complexity. However, finding analytical closed-form solutions for the current-voltage (I-U) dependency in PVDDM circuits has remained a challenge.

A Perspective of Multi-Reflecting TOF MS.

Mass Spectrom Rev

November 2024

Mass Spectrometry Consulting Ltd, City of Bar, Montenegro.

Time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF MS) excels in rapid and high-sensitivity analysis, making it a cornerstone of analytical chemistry. But as sample complexity explodes in omics studies, so does the need for higher resolving power to ensure accurate results. Traditional TOF instruments face a challenge: achieving high resolution often requires a very large instrument.

Tolerance of free-living larval stage of a parasite from coastal mining areas in northern Humboldt Current to copper pollution at low and high temperatures.

PLoS One

November 2024

Instituto de Ciencias Naturales "Alexander von Humboldt", Facultad de Ciencias del Mar y Recursos Biológicos, Universidad de Antofagasta, Antofagasta, Chile.

Metal pollution is a worldwide problem and one of the greatest threats to ecosystem integrity due to its toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation in biological systems. Anthropogenic pollution impacts marine organisms and host-parasite dynamics, with the northern Chilean coast experiencing elevated copper levels in marine waters and sediments due to mining activities. In this study, we assessed the effects of exposure to copper concentrations at low and high-water temperatures on the survival and longevity of the marine parasite Himasthla sp.

Serotype-specific epidemiological patterns of inapparent versus symptomatic primary dengue virus infections: a 17-year cohort study in Nicaragua.

Lancet Infect Dis

October 2024

Division of Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology, School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley, Berkeley, CA, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Dengue is the most prevalent mosquito-borne viral disease and a major public health problem worldwide. Most primary infections with the four dengue virus serotypes (DENV1-4) are inapparent; nonetheless, whether the distribution of symptomatic versus inapparent infections by serotype varies remains unknown. Here, we present (1) the evaluation of a DENV1-4 envelope domain III multiplex microsphere-based assay (EDIII-MMBA) to serotype inapparent primary infections and (2) its application leveraging 17 years of prospective sample collection from the Nicaraguan Pediatric Dengue Cohort Study (PDCS).

Article Synopsis
  • - Ovarian cancer in children and adolescents is uncommon and requires a specialized approach, involving a team of healthcare providers to address its unique diagnostic and treatment challenges.
  • - Diagnosis often involves imaging tests and tumor markers, while surgical treatments should prioritize fertility preservation whenever possible, along with tailored chemotherapy based on the type of cancer and its stage.
  • - Early detection leads to high survival rates of over 90%, but ongoing follow-up is essential to monitor for recurrence and manage any long-term side effects from treatment.

Background: From the viewpoint of health and education, traumatized children and adolescents who have fled from war and conflict zones to Switzerland represent a high-risk group, as they suffer from psychiatric symptoms to an above-average extent and on several levels: somatic, psychological, psychosomatic, and psychosocial.

Objectives: The complexity and severity of these problems overwhelm the existing school structures in many cases: There is a clear need for psychotherapeutic interventions here that goes beyond purely verbal conversational therapy and provides an holistic concept.

Methods: We propose the following novel approach: "Trauma group therapy with karate-do for war-traumatized children and adolescents" which integrates and applies the evidence-based methods of integrative Budo-Therapy, trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) and Integrative Gestalt Therapy according to Dr.

Article Synopsis
  • SARS-CoV-2 infection severity may be influenced by genetic factors, particularly through the role of platelets and coagulation markers in severe COVID-19 cases.
  • A study of 43 unvaccinated hospitalized COVID-19 patients found significantly higher expression of the platelet-activating factor receptor (PTAFR) and platelet factor 4 (PF4) compared to healthy individuals.
  • The findings suggest that hyperexpression of these genes could serve as important biomarkers for assessing the risk of complications in COVID-19 patients, aiding in personalized treatment approaches.

Five-factor theory of aging and death due to aging.

Arch Gerontol Geriatr

February 2025

University of Montenegro, Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Dzordza Vasingtona bb, 81000 Podgorica, Montenegro. Electronic address:

This new theory of aging explains that aging and death due to aging are due to five factors, and also explains how these factors are interconnected and jointly lead to aging and death of the organism, pointing to many facts that strongly support it. The first factor is the harmful changes that occur in cellular structures. The second factor is the cessation of cell division in adult organisms, which leads to the inability to restore cellular structures.

High-fat diets have detrimental health impacts that increase the likelihood of developing obesity and metabolic syndrome. This study aimed to examine the potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of orlistat and white tea in rats fed a high-fat diet. Thirty-two rats were randomized into four groups: control (standard diet), HFD (high-fat diet), HFD+Orlistat (high-fat diet+orlistat), and HFD+WT (high-fat diet+white tea extract).
