Background: Systemic inflammation has been associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) and arrhythmia occurrence in rheumatologic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. Polymyositis and dermatomyositis (PD) are rare rheumatologic conditions characterized by symmetrical proximal muscle weakness and, in the case of dermatomyositis, cutaneous eruption. Although there is literature associating PD with ASCVD, no population-level studies have analyzed arrhythmia risk in PD.

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is a rare muscular disorder, characterized by muscle weakness and hypokalemia triggered by thyrotoxicosis. In Asian populations, 2% of patients with thyrotoxicosis are affected, compared to only 0.1-0.

Patients And Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study which included adults (>18 years old) who had hospitalizations recorded in the National Inpatient Sample database in the United States from January 1, 2005, to December 31, 2014. Patients with celiac disease were matched (1:5) by age, sex, race, and calendar year to patients without celiac disease.

Introduction Several comorbid conditions have been identified as risk factors in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, there is a dearth of data describing the impact of COVID-19 infection in patients with end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis (ESRD-HD). Methods This retrospective case series analyzed 362 adult patients consecutively hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 illness between March 12, 2020, and May 13, 2020, at a teaching hospital in the New York City metropolitan area.

Background Advancing age and male sex have been identified as risk factors for poor outcomes in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, there is a dearth of data investigating the impact of age on the risk reported with male sex. We aimed to determine the risk associated with male sex in people of different age groups, that is, in people younger or older than 65 years of age.

Introduction/background: Dextrocardia is a malposition of the heart in the thoracic cavity. Dextrocardia has been known to cause diagnostic dilemmas with atypical presentations in acute coronary syndrome, as well as technical challenges in patients who require interventions such as coronary catheterization, transcutaneous aortic valve replacement, ablation for arrhythmias, or pacemaker/defibrillator placement. Transcription factor Pitx2 has been shown to have a fundamental role during cardio-genesis, and its misexpression has been implicated in arrhythmogenesis and congenital heart diseases including visceral situs inversus.

Objective: To determine the incidence of and risk factors for the development of acute kidney injury (AKI) and investigate the association between AKI and mortality in patients hospitalized with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection.
Patients And Methods: This retrospective case series includes the first 370 patients consecutively hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 illness between March 10, 2020, and May 13, 2020, at a 242-bed teaching hospital. To determine independent associations between demographic factors, comorbid conditions, and AKI incidence, multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios adjusted for clinical covariates.

Objective: The resistance to antimony-containing glucantime is a major obstacle to successful treatment, especially in endemic areas. Looking the molecular mechanisms involved in this drug resistance will help in choosing the best treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of multidrug-resistance 1 (MDR1) and multidrug-resistance protein A (MRPA) genes in acute, chronic non-lupoid, and chronic lupoid forms of dry type cutaneous leishmaniasis (DTCL).

Objective: Histopathological studies suggest that parasite load is different between acute and chronic forms of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). However, highly sensitive detection methods are still needed to distinguish different forms of leishmaniasis. In the present study, we developed a quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect and quantify Leishmania tropica parasites in paraffin-embedded tissue samples.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) poses challenges not only in symptom management but also in prognostication. Managing COPD requires clinicians to be proficient in the primary palliative care skills of symptom management and communication focused on eliciting goals and preferences. Dyspnea should initially be managed with the combination of long-acting muscarinic antagonists and long-acting β-agonist inhalers, adding inhaled corticosteroids if symptoms persist.

Leukemia is known as a progressive malignant disease, which destroys the blood-forming organs and results in adverse effects on the proliferation and development of leukocytes and their precursors in the blood and bone marrow. There are four main classes of leukemia including acute leukemia, chronic leukemia, myelogenous leukemia, and lymphocytic leukemia. Given that a variety of internal and external factors could be associated with the initiation and progression of different types of leukemia.

Background: Updated knowledge of the palliative care (PC) literature is needed to maintain competency and best address the PC needs of hospitalized patients. We critiqued the recent PC literature with the highest potential to impact hospital practice.
Methods: We reviewed articles published between January 2016 and December 2016, which were identified through a handsearch of leading journals and a MEDLINE search.

Spurred on by recent health care reforms and the Triple Aim's goals of improving population health outcomes, reducing health care costs, and improving the patient experience of care, emphasis on population health is increasing throughout medicine. Population health has the potential to improve patient care and health outcomes for individual patients. However, specific population health activities may not be in every patient's best interest in every circumstance, which can create ethical tensions for individual physicians and other health care professionals.

Little is known about the prevalence of secondhand smoke exposure (SHSe) among cancer survivors. We sought to determine the prevalence, trends, and correlates of SHSe among nonsmoking adult cancer survivors in the United States. Interview and serum cotinine data for nonsmoking adults, age 20 years and older, with a history of cancer ( = 686) were obtained from consecutive two-year cross-sectional cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 to 2012.

Patients with spinal abnormalities infrequently present with intradural intramedullary bleeding. The more common causes include spinal trauma, arteriovenous malformations and saccular aneurysms of spinal arteries. On occasion, spinal cord tumors either primary or metastatic may cause intramedullary bleed with ependymoma of the conus medullaris.
