Article Synopsis
  • Ki67 is a key biomarker in breast cancer but struggles with consistent measurement between labs, prompting research into automated digital image analysis (DIA).
  • The study assessed Ki67 levels using specially prepared slides from 30 breast cancer patients, with analysis conducted by 17 labs to evaluate consistency in scoring.
  • Results showed a strong correlation between consecutive sections, but core biopsy samples had notably higher Ki67 scores than whole sections, indicating that core biopsies may provide a more accurate biological status of the tumor.

Article Synopsis
  • The two main health issues related to SARS-CoV-2 in children are acute COVID-19 pneumonia and multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C), with most cases being mild but some risking severe pneumonia.
  • MIS-C occurs weeks after exposure to the virus, leading to a fever that can escalate into serious complications like shock and organ failure.
  • The paper discusses the challenges in diagnosing these conditions, the importance of thoracic imaging in treatment plans, and the differences between COVID-19 pneumonia and MIS-C.

Background: Morbid obesity has been considered a contraindication to ventral hernia repair (VHR) in the past. However, the relationship between a greater body mass index (BMI) and adverse outcomes has yet to be established in the minimally invasive sphere, particularly with robotics, which may offer an effective surgical option in these high-risk patients. We sought to investigate this relationship by comparing the outcomes of class-II (BMI: 35-39.

Introduction: Neaodjuvant chemotherapy is used to treat high risk triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Residual cancer burden (RCB) is used to predict risk of relapse after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC); however, it cannot predict disease recurrence with certainty. EZH2 is a targetable oncogenic protein overexpressed in TNBC and associated with metastasis and stem cell expansion.

The advent of immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) in modern oncology has significantly improved survival in several cancer settings. A subgroup of women with breast cancer (BC) has immunogenic infiltration of lymphocytes with expression of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1). These patients may potentially benefit from ICI targeting the programmed death 1 (PD-1)/PD-L1 signaling axis.

Background: Patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), such as polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET), and primary myelofibrosis (PMF), are at an increased risk of recurrent thromboembolic events (TEs) and hemorrhagic complications. Anticoagulation with vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) had been the standard of care until the recent US Food and Drug Administration approval of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) for treatment of cancer-associated thrombosis. However, since patients with MPNs were underrepresented in large studies, the use of DOACs in patients with MPN-associated thrombosis remains understudied.

Aims: Cardiac 123iodine-meta-iodobenzylguanidine (123I-mIBG) single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging provides information on regional myocardial innervation. However, the value of the commonly used 17-segment summed defect score (SDS) as a prognostic marker is uncertain. The present study examined whether a simpler regional scoring approach for evaluation of 123I-mIBG SPECT combined with rest 99mTc-tetrofosmin SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging could improve prediction of arrhythmic events (AEs) in patients with ischaemic heart failure (HF).

Safe Pulmonary Scintigraphy in the Era of COVID-19.

Semin Nucl Med

January 2022

Division of Nuclear Medicine, Department of Radiology, Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY. Electronic address:

One of the major effects of the COVID-19 pandemic within nuclear medicine was to halt performance of lung ventilation studies, due to concern regarding spread of contaminated secretions into the ambient air. A number of variant protocols for performing lung scintigraphy emerged in the medical literature which minimized or eliminated the ventilation component, due to the persistent need to provide this critical diagnostic service without compromising the safety of staff and patients. We have summarized and reviewed these protocols, many of which are based on concepts developed earlier in the history of lung scintigraphy.

Community SARS-CoV-2 has profoundly affected traditional elements of learning and teaching in nuclear medicine and diagnostic radiology departments. The response of the nuclear medicine community to the challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic can be described in 3 phases: accommodation, consolidation and optimization, and a return towards normalcy. Adoption of virtual communication platforms has emerged as the crucial interim tool for preservation of trainee supervision and diagnostic imaging education.

Article Synopsis
  • Saddle pulmonary embolism is a rare but serious condition that can cause sudden collapse and potentially lead to death, though its recognition and data on its features are limited.
  • A study conducted at Montefiore Medical Center analyzed 120 patients with this condition from 2012 to 2018, revealing that many cases were less dramatic than expected, with most patients not showing classic signs of massive pulmonary embolism.
  • The study found an in-hospital mortality rate of 9.2% and a recurrent venous thromboembolism rate of 15.3% among survivors, highlighting the need for better understanding and diagnosis of this condition.

Objective: Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) has become a mainstay of treatment for a variety of thoracic aortic pathologies. Expansion of the proximal aortic neck after endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms has been demonstrated; however, dilatation of the proximal aortic neck after TEVAR has not been well described. We sought to describe remodeling of the proximal neck following TEVAR.
