Int J Biol Macromol

December 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, The First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University, No. 155 Nanjing North Street, Shenyang, Liaoning, China. Electronic address:

Chitosan, obtained through deacetylation of chitin, has been shown to a promising biopolymer for the development of nano- and micro-particles. In spite of inherent anti-cancer activity of chitosan, the employment of this carbohydrate polymer for the synthesis of nanoparticles opens a new gate in disease therapy. The properties of chitosan including biocompatibility, biodegradability, and modifiability are vital in enhancing these nanoparticles, allowing for improved solubility and interaction with cellular targets.

NOTCH1 signaling, a vital regulator of cell proliferation and differentiation, is widely involved in the occurrence and development of malignant tumors. Pharmacological regulation of NOTCH1 is promising in tumor immunotherapy, whereas the effective rate of existing therapies remains low. NOTCH1 functions, as a cancer suppressor or a cancer promoter in different cancers, is engaged in the crosstalk between the immune microenvironment and cancer cells, posing a major challenge to immunotherapy.

Analysis of TRIOBP gene in non-syndromic deafness: A case report.

Medicine (Baltimore)

November 2024

Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, Affiliated Hospital of Inner Mongolia Medical University, Hohhot, P.R. China.

Article Synopsis
  • A genetic investigation was conducted in a family with hearing loss, utilizing high-throughput sequencing to identify deafness-related genes, specifically examining the TRIOBP and CHD genes.
  • The patient was diagnosed with bilateral moderate to severe sensorineural deafness and was recommended treatments like hearing aids or cochlear implants, but opted out for personal reasons.
  • The study discovered new mutations in the TRIOBP gene and identified that all family members with hearing loss had nonsyndromic deafness, but further research is required to understand the causes for the other family members' conditions.

Bacterial-host adhesion dominated by collagen subtypes remodelled by osmotic pressure.

NPJ Biofilms Microbiomes

November 2024

Department of Mechanics and Engineering Science, College of Engineering, Peking University, Beijing, China.

Environmental osmolarity plays a crucial role in regulating the functions and behaviors of both host cells and pathogens. However, it remains unclear whether and how environmental osmotic stimuli modulate bacterial‒host interfacial adhesion. Using single-cell force spectroscopy, we revealed that the interfacial adhesion force depended nonlinearly on the osmotic prestimulation of host cells but not bacteria.

Objectives: Studies on the relationship between serum sclerostin, a Wnt/β-catenin pathway inhibitor, and atherosclerosis have yielded inconsistent results. We aim to longitudinally investigate the relationship between serum sclerostin levels and the risk of increased arterial stiffness in Japanese community-dwelling women.

Methods: Of 1044 women aged ≥50 years whose brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) value was available in a baseline survey in 2011-2012, we excluded 374 whose baPWVs were ≥1800 cm/s, set as the cutoff for increased arterial stiffness, and eight with missing data.

Department of Thoracic Surgery, National Cancer Center/National Clinical Research Center for Cancer/Cancer Hospital, Peking Union Medical College, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Beijing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed lymph node metastasis patterns in esophageal cancer, using data from 143 patients who underwent surgery between March 2021 and March 2022.
  • Researchers classified metastatic lymph nodes based on postoperative T staging and identified that certain thoracic and abdominal lymph node regions showed higher metastatic rates, particularly in the T3 stage of cancer.
  • The findings suggest that the theory of membrane anatomy provides a useful framework for understanding lymph node metastasis in esophageal cancer, highlighting early metastasis in specific regions like 106recR.
