The aim of this study was to study growth patterns of children born after suspected fetal growth restriction (FGR) at term and to compare the effect of induction of labor (IoL) and expectant management (EM), also in relation to neurodevelopmental and behavioral outcome at age 2. We performed a 2 years' follow-up of growth of children included in the Disproportionate Intrauterine Growth Restriction Trial at Term (DIGITAT) study, a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) comparing IoL with EM in pregnancies with suspected FGR at term. We collected data on child growth until the age of 2 years.

Annexin 1 (Anx-1) is a mediator of the anti-inflammatory actions of glucocorticoids, but the mechanism of its anti-inflammatory effects is not known. We investigated the role of Anx-1 in the regulation of the proinflammatory cytokine, IL-6. Lung fibroblast cell lines derived from Anx-1(-/-) and wild-type (WT) mice were treated with dexamethasone and/or IL-1.

Aim: The aim of this study is to review the clinical usefulness of Doppler velocimetry of the uterine artery for the detection of adverse obstetric outcome in a population of women with elevated mid-trimester serum beta-human chorionic gonadotrophin (betahCG).

Methods: Women with an unexplained elevated mid-trimester betahCG level (> or = 4.0 multiples of the median) are offered uterine artery Doppler assessment at 22-24 weeks of gestation.

Objective: The hyperplasia of fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) is considered essential to the evolution of joint destruction in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but the mechanisms underlying FLS proliferation remain poorly understood. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a cytokine that has recently been shown to exert proinflammatory effects on RA FLS. This study sought to identify the mechanisms of activation of FLS by MIF, and to assess the effects of MIF on synovial cell proliferation.

The prone sleeping position impairs arousability in term infants.

J Pediatr

June 2001

Department of Paediatrics and Ritchie Centre for Baby Health Research, Monash University Medical Centre, 246 Clayton Road, Clayton, Victoria, Australia 3168.

Objective: To investigate whether the prone sleeping position impaired arousal from sleep in healthy infants and whether this impairment was related to cardiorespiratory variables, temperature, or age.

Study Design: Healthy term infants (n = 24) were studied with daytime polysomnography on 3 occasions: 2 to 3 weeks after birth, 2 to 3 months after birth, and 5 to 6 months after birth. Multiple measurements of arousal threshold (cm H(2)O) in response to air-jet stimulation applied alternately to the nares were made in both active sleep and quiet sleep when infants slept both prone and supine.

Aging, food, culture and health.

July 1998

Department of Medicine, Monash University Medical Centre, Monash University, Clayton, Vic., Australia.

International comparison of food intake and health studies amongst the aged is providing new insight into the importance of food culture in social context for healthy aging. At same time the possible variance in eating behavior compatible with good health requires consideration. The IUNS (International Union of Nutritional Sciences) FHILL (Food Habits in Later Life) Project, comprises (1) a morbidity study on about 2,000 elderly in 13 communities (now available on CD Rom) and (2) a mortality follow-up study.
