Background: Pathogen reduction technology (PRT) is an intervention designed to proactively reduce the amount of known and unknown pathogens in donated blood. As current screening for known pathogens is highly effective, some previous evaluations have found that the value of PRT largely hinges on a previously unknown pathogen, most likely a novel virus, emerging and entering the blood supply. In such situations, the risk of emergence can and should be modeled and presented transparently in the cost-effectiveness results for deliberation by decision-makers.

Article Synopsis
  • The research investigates how power distance belief (PDB), which refers to people's acceptance of social hierarchies, influences the consumption of organic food.
  • Findings indicate that consumers with low PDB are more likely to prefer and purchase organic foods due to heightened environmental concerns compared to high PDB consumers.
  • The study also identifies strategies to encourage high PDB consumers to buy organic foods, such as framing environmental issues as future societal concerns that lessen power distance, and using low-level construal to increase organic food consumption.

We examine the impact of access to high-speed internet on obesity. Using 14 waves of longitudinal data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey and a newly constructed dataset on the rollout and adoption rate of the National Broadband Network (NBN) across Australian postcodes, we find that access to high-speed internet has a positive effect on obesity. Specifically, our preferred instrumental variable estimates, which predict the variation in timing and location of internet access upgrades, suggest that a 1 % increase in the proportion of a postcode that has access to NBN is associated with a 1.

Risk-benefit analysis of a multi-site radiographer comment model for emergency departments.

Emerg Med Australas

October 2024

Medical Imaging Department, Broken Hill Hospital, Far West Local Health District, Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia.

Objectives: Critical/urgent X-ray findings are not always communicated in an appropriate time frame to ED physicians. The practice of radiographers alerting referrers to clinically significant image findings (verbally, via image flags or written comment) is noted internationally but risk assessment data is unavailable in the literature. A hybrid radiographer comment and alert model was piloted in New South Wales and a risk-benefit assessment conducted for timely and safe communication of abnormal X-ray appearances to ED physicians.

Article Synopsis
  • Nurse practitioner-led Medical Emergency Team (MET) calls are associated with better clinical outcomes compared to those led by ICU registrars, but their cost effectiveness is less understood.
  • A retrospective study analyzed the costs of MET calls over nearly two years, revealing that nurse practitioner-led calls were cheaper, with lower average costs per call than ICU registrar-led calls.
  • A healthcare service performing over 101 MET calls that lead to ICU admissions annually could benefit financially by implementing a 24-hour nurse practitioner-led MET call system.

Artificial intelligence investments reduce risks to critical mineral supply.

Nat Commun

August 2024

Department of Economics, Monash Business School, Monash University, Clayton, NC, Australia.

This paper employs insights from earth science on the financial risk of project developments to present an economic theory of critical minerals. Our theory posits that back-ended critical mineral projects that have unaddressed technical and non-technical barriers, such as those involving lithium and cobalt, exhibit an additional risk for investors which we term the "back-ended risk premium". We show that the back-ended risk premium increases the cost of capital and, therefore, has the potential to reduce investment in the sector.

In a series of experiments involving beliefs and misinformation beliefs, we find that individuals who are prompted with a counterfactual mindset are significantly more likely to change their existing beliefs when presented with evidence that contradicts their beliefs. While research finds that beliefs that are considered part of one's identity are highly resistant to change in the face of evidence that challenges these beliefs, four experiments provide evidence that counterfactual generation causes individuals to adjust beliefs and correct misinformation beliefs in response to contradicting evidence. Indeed, we find that a counterfactual mindset was effective in promoting incorporation of accurate facts and causing individuals to revise misinformation beliefs about COVID vaccination safety for a large sample of individuals who have rejected COVID vaccinations.
