Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most prevalent long-term inflammatory condition affecting the central nervous system in adults. However, seizures are rarely described as the first presentation of MS or as a sole manifestation of radiologically isolated syndrome (RIS) or clinically isolated syndrome (CIS). The diagnosis of MS typically requires clinical evidence of neurological deficits and supportive radiological findings; however, RIS is characterized by incidental magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings suggestive of MS in the absence of clinical symptoms.

Background: The emergence and rapid spread of new severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) variants have challenged the control of the COVID-19 pandemic globally. Burundi was not spared by that pandemic, but the genetic diversity, evolution, and epidemiology of those variants in the country remained poorly understood. The present study sought to investigate the role of different SARS-COV-2 variants in the successive COVID-19 waves experienced in Burundi and the impact of their evolution on the course of that pandemic.

Genetic Diagnosis of Inborn Errors of Immunity in an Emerging Country: a Retrospective Study of 216 Moroccan Patients.

J Clin Immunol

February 2023

Clinical Immunology, Inflammation and Allergy Laboratory (LICIA), Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hassan II University, Casablanca, Morocco.

Article Synopsis
  • Genetic testing is crucial for diagnosing inborn errors of immunity (IEI), but high costs and advanced tech limit accessibility, especially in low-income countries like Morocco.
  • A study analyzed 742 patients over 12 years, finding that 29% received genetic diagnoses, with 55 defects identified, including 7 new ones.
  • Collaborative thesis projects were key to achieving these results, highlighting progress in genetic diagnosis and offering a foundation for better patient care in Morocco.
