Background: Atrophic scars are white, dermal depressions, caused by the destruction of collagen fibers and decrease in epidermal cells, following inflammation after different types of trauma. They lead to significant physical, aesthetic and psychological barriers and their treatment remain a therapeutic challenge for dermatologists. Microneedling has been shown to improve scars by stimulating angiogenesis and neocolagenesis and the combination of anti-fibrotic drugs could potentialize the results.

Most characterized angiogenic modulators are proteolytic fragments of structural plasma and/or matrix components. Herein, we have identified a novel anti-angiogenic peptide generated by the hydrolysis of the C-terminal moiety of the fibrinogen alpha chain, produced by the snake venom metalloprotease bothropasin (SVMP), a hemorrhagic proteinase in Bothrops jararaca venom. The 14-amino acids peptide (alphastatin-C) is a potent antagonist of basic fibroblast growth factor, induced endothelial cell (HUVEC-CS) proliferation, migration and capillary tube formation in matrigel.

Department of Restorative Dentistry, Dental Materials Division, Piracicaba Dental School, University of Campinas, Limeira Avenue, 901, Vila Rezende, Areiao, Piracicaba, São Paulo, 13414-903, Brazil.

Objectives: To evaluate the antibacterial activity, bacterial viability, cytotoxicity, and mechanical/physical properties of a novel methacrylate triclosan-derivative monomer (TM) incorporated in dental resin composite.

Methods: TM was synthesized by esterification and, after characterization by FT-IR, was added to an experimental composite. Samples were divided into two groups according to TM presence, i.

July 2018

Department of Immunology, Laboratory of Tumor Immunology, Institute of Biomedical Science, University of Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, SP, Brazil.

Cancer comprises a group of heterogeneous diseases encompassing high rates of morbidity and mortality. Heterogeneity, which is a hallmark of cancer, is one of the main factors related to resistance to chemotherapeutic agents leading to poor prognosis. Heterogeneity is profoundly affected by increasing levels of ROS.

Technological Research Center - NPT, Mogi das Cruzes University - UMC, Av. Candido Almeida de Xavier e Souza 200, Mogi das Cruzes, São Paulo 08780-911, Brazil.

Unlabelled: Laser photobiomodulation or low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is recognized worldwide for its expansive use in medicine. LLLT has been reported to increase enzymatic activity, increasing the mitochondrial transmembrane potential, leading to an increased energy availability and signal transduction. Nevertheless, an inhibitory effect is also observed by the production of excessive ROS which can result the shutdown of mitochondrial energy production, and finally to apoptosis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) triggers increased levels of inflammatory markers, including prostaglandin (PG) E and proinflammatory cytokines. The elevation of cytokine levels is closely associated with increased articular tissue degeneration. Thus, the use of combination therapies may presumably be able to enhance the effects on the modulation of inflammatory markers.

Spasticity is a motor disorder frequently present in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on the spasticity of the masseter and anterior temporal muscle fibers in children with CP over three weeks of intermittent laser exposures. The bite force (BF) of the masticatory muscles and the amplitude of mouth opening were evaluated before and after laser irradiation in 30 children with CP.
