The advantages of modified Thiel technique in head and neck surgical anatomy teaching.

Surg Radiol Anat

March 2022

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, CHU de Caen, 14000, Caen, France.

Purpose: Thiel's body preservation method allows the donor body to retain color and soft tissue that are similar to those of a living individual. Since its initial description, the technique has not been developed much. Here, we propose a simpler protocol applied to the head and neck, making the technique easier, cheaper, and more accessible to a greater number of medical schools.

Aims And Objectives: To describe an inferior extension of a naso-labial flap as an adjunct to a maleo-labial flap in reconstruction of complete thickness defects around the oral commissure in 2 cases that we performed at our institute.

Methods: Two elderly cases of carcinoma buccal mucosa who underwent wide local excision along with neck dissection had moderately large peri-oral defects that are large to cover with nasolabial flap alone. An inferior extension to the maleo-labial flap was added, making it a naso-mento-labial flap to reconstruct the defects with an acceptable outcome aesthetically and functionally.

Effect of Prophylactic Central Lymph Node Dissection on Locoregional Recurrence in Patients with Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinoma.

Int J Endocrinol

November 2021

Department of Ultrasound, Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University, Yongan Road No. 95, Xicheng District, Beijing 100050, China.

There is a consensus that central compartment lymph node dissection or modified radical lateral neck dissection should be performed in papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) patients with lymph node metastases. Prophylactic central lymph node dissection (PCLND) in patients with clinically node-negative (cN0) PTMC to reduce locoregional recurrence (LRR) rate and improve prognosis remains controversial. The present study aimed to analyze the effect of PCLND on LRR and postoperative complications of PTMC in cN0 patients.
