Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, University of Bern, 3010 Bern, Switzerland.

: Lymph node metastases are associated with poor prognosis in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Neck dissection (ND) is often performed prior to or after (chemo)radiation (CRT) and is an integral part of HNSCC treatment strategies. The impact of CRT delivered prior to ND on lymph node yield (LNY) and lymph node ratio (LNR) has not been comprehensively investigated.

Purpose: To report the early experience of a modified technique of robot-assisted artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) implantation in female, with a posterior approach to the bladder neck and intraoperative real-time cystoscopic monitoring.

Methods: Retrospective monocentric study included all consecutive female who underwent a primary robot-assisted AUS implantation between 2017 and 2019. Real-time intraoperative cystoscopic monitoring was carried out to check the correct level of the dissection and to avoid any injury during bladder neck dissection.

Robotic transaxillary lateral neck dissection for thyroid cancer: learning experience from 500 cases.

Surg Endosc

April 2022

Department of Surgery, Severance Hospital, Yonsei Cancer Center, Yonsei University College of Medicine, 50-1, Yonsei-ro, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, South Korea.

Background: Differentiated thyroid carcinoma with lateral neck lymph node metastasis requires aggressive operative intervention, including lateral neck dissection. Although several robotic approaches have made precise surgery for thyroid cancer possible, few centers have expanded the technique for application to lateral neck dissections. This study aimed to demonstrate the technical feasibility, cosmetic effectiveness, and safety of robotic transaxillary lateral neck dissection (RTLND) using the da Vinci system.

Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the advantages of carbon nanoparticles in neck dissection and to conclude its application in the treatment of clinically node-negative papillary thyroid carcinoma (CN0PTC).

Methods: As a retrospective cohort study, we divided the enrolled patients into two groups, the carbon nanoparticle (CN) group and the control group according to the usage of CN. In the CN group, CN was applied to reveal drainage lymph nodes and the picked LNs were sent for fast frozen testing.

Major salivary gland malignancies are rare, constituting 1%-3% of head-neck tumours. The surgical management of the clinically negative neck (cN0) does not have a univocal consensus yet. We have carried out a retrospective study on 119 cases of malignant parotid tumours that were surgically treated between January 1999 and January 2014.

In the Video S1, a modified technique for submandibular gland resection in benign disease is shown. The main plane of dissection is below the fascia and immediately superficial to the fibrous capsule of the gland. The video shows the surgical steps and the structures that become evident along the procedure and illustrates some tips and tricks.

Objective: Surgical treatment of advanced intracranial and extracranial communicating skull base tumors is challenging, especially for the reconstruction of the large composite defect left by tumor resection. The aim of the study is to evaluate the utility of the free flap reconstruction of the defects resulting from radical resection of these tumors in a single institution.

Methods: The clinical data of 17 consecutive patients who underwent free flap reconstruction for defect left by salvage resection of advanced intracranial and extracranial communicating tumors from 2013 to 2019 were retrospectively collected and analyzed.

Sistrunk vs modified Sistrunk procedures: Does procedure type matter?

J Pediatr Surg

December 2021

Division of Pediatric Surgery, Department of Surgery, Children's Medical Center, University of Texas Southwestern, Dallas TX USA. Electronic address:

Background: Thyroglossal Duct Cyst (TDC) is the most common congenital neck mass in children and is surgically managed with a Sistrunk procedure. Some surgeons perform a modified Sistrunk (mSis), involving the dissection of the fistula beyond the hyoid bone without coring out the foramen cecum at the base of the tongue. We aim to evaluate surgical outcomes of children undergoing Sistrunk (Sis) or modified Sistrunk (mSis) procedures for TDC at an academic pediatric institution.

Article Synopsis
  • Study aimed to assess how diagnostic TORS lingual tonsillectomy (DTLT) affects swallowing in patients with carcinoma of unknown primary (CUP).
  • A total of 27 patients with HPV-associated OPSCC underwent the procedure and had their swallowing evaluated using Modified Barium Swallow tests, compared against patients with identified primary tumors.
  • Results indicated that DTLT improved swallowing safety scores and reduced the incidence of moderate/severe dysphagia in CUP patients compared to those with base of tongue tumors, with a follow-up showing promising overall survival rates.

Therapeutic neck dissection in head and neck melanoma patients: Comparing extent of surgery and clinical outcome in two cohorts.

Eur J Surg Oncol

September 2021

Department of Head and Neck Surgery and Oncology, The Netherlands Cancer Institute-Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

Background: The extent of surgical management of regional lymph nodes in the treatment of cutaneous head and neck melanoma on and anterior to O'Brien's watershed line is controversial. By comparing patients' cohorts of two separate melanoma expert centers we investigate the effectiveness of comprehensive versus (super-) selective neck dissection approach.

Methods: Sixty patients with macroscopic (palpable) neck node metastases (N2b) from anterior scalp and face melanoma were retrospectively studied.

Background/objective: Open thyroidectomy has been the standard approach for patients undergoing thyroidectomy. However, this approach leads to prominent scars, hypesthesia, paresthesia, and uncomfortable sensations. We aimed to describe our modified technique of minimally invasive open thyroidectomy (MIT) and to compare the results with those of conventional thyroidectomy.

Background: The objective was to develop an assessment tool to evaluate residents' competency for neck dissection and provide preliminary evidence of feasibility, reliability, and validity.

Methods: Six surgeons developed a neck dissection assessment tool using a modified Delphi method and evaluated 58 neck dissections from six junior and six senior otolaryngology residents.

Results: The assessment tool uses a double checklist: a previously validated global rating scale (GRS) and a task-specific checklist (TSC).

Objectives: To provide a clinical disease state review of recent relevant literature and to generate expert consensus statements regarding the breadth of pediatric thyroid cancer diagnosis and care, with an emphasis on thyroid surgery. To generate expert statements to educate pediatric practitioners on the state-of-the-art practices and the value of surgical experience in the management of this unusual and challenging disease in children.

Methods: A literature search was conducted and statements were constructed and subjected to a modified Delphi process to measure the consensus of the expert author panel.

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, King Saud Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Introduction: Pipkin-III femoral head fracture dislocation is a rare injury and its outcome is guarded. Some authors believe femoral neck fracture of Pipkin-III injury is largely iatrogenic. Recent literature showed none of these injuries had excellent outcome, and most patients end up with hip replacement.

Background: Meningoencephaloceles originating in the lateral recess of the sphenoid sinus can be difficult to access. Historically, the endoscopic transpterygoid approach was advocated, which carries additional morbidity given the dissection of the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) contents to provide a direct line approach to the defect. Given our increased facility with angled endoscopes and instrumentation, we now approach this region in a less invasive manner.
