Purpose: We used a novel diagnostic Fourier transform (FT) algorithm of the entire extrahepatic bile duct (EHBD) measured by magnetic resonance cholangiography (MRC) to evaluate subtle deformation of bile duct lumen, indicating the malignant potential of EHBD, in patients with pancreaticobiliary maljunction (PBMJ) and in a comparative group of controls without PBMJ.
Methods: From the workstation, the EHBD lumen was traced automatically and a 2D diagram cross section was measured at 0.5 mm-longitudinal intervals.

Background: Rhabdomyomas comprise the majority of cardiac tumors in fetuses and are found in association with tuberous sclerosis complex. More than 90% of fetuses and neonates with multiple cardiac rhabdomyomas have signs of tuberous sclerosis complex. However, solitary cardiac rhabdomyoma cases are largely unrelated to tuberous sclerosis complex.

To identify which patients will have difficulty during morcellation in holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), we analyzedthe association of preoperative factors with morcellation efficiency retrospectively. Between March 2015 andMay 2019, 129 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) underwent HoLEP at our institution. Based on the morcellation efficiency (morcellation volume per minute), they were classifiedinto easy (≥3 g/min, n=81) andd ifficult (<3 g/min, n=48) groups.

It is often straightforward to distinguish glioblastoma (GBM) from metastatic carcinoma by cytology; however, small cell variants of GBM or GBM with primitive neuronal component (GBMPNC) can mimic metastatic small cell carcinoma (SCC). Herein, we report a case of GBMPNC mimicking metastatic SCC and present cytological and ultrastructural findings. A 65-year-old man with memory disturbance was hospitalized.

TP53 mutations are important molecular markers in diffuse astrocytic tumors and medulloblastomas. We examined the efficacy of a pre-screening method for high-resolution melting (HRM) analysis of TP53 mutation before direct sequencing using samples from patients with diffuse glioma. Surgical samples from 64 diffuse gliomas were classified based on the 2016 World Health Organization (WHO) histopathological grading system and the cIMPACT-NOW (consortium to inform molecular and practical approaches to CNS tumor taxonomy-not official WHO) update.

Background: Pseudo-outbreaks of non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) in association with the water supply system in hospitals have been previously reported. We found that the frequency of NTM isolation in clinical samples increased after the reconstruction and renovation of a hospital in Japan in 2014.
Aim: To analyse NTM, their possible relationship with the hospital water supply system, and outcomes of preventive measures.

Chronic intervillositis of unknown etiology (CIUE) is a rare placental lesion associated with infiltration of mononuclear inflammatory cells into the intervillous space, poor perinatal outcomes (intrauterine fetal demise or fetal growth restriction), and high rates of recurrence. CD39 is the ectonucleotidase that protects tissues from inflammatory stress and cell injury, which is localized on the surface of villi in normal placentas; however, its expression and role in CIUE are unknown. The aims of this retrospective study were to determine the expression of CD39 in CIUE and its significance in pregnancy outcomes.

Approximately half of the patients with esophageal cancer are diagnosed at an advanced stage with inoperable disease. The technique of bypass surgery, which is one of the palliative procedures for esophageal cancer, usually requires the insertion of a drainage tube for clearing secretions from the blind remnant esophagus. Since the artificial drainage tube is sometimes problematic for the patient after discharge from the hospital, drainage tubeless (DRESS) surgery might be preferable.

Intrauterine inflammation contributes to neonatal infection-related morbidity. A new histological framework of placental inflammation has recently been proposed; however, the association between this method and clinical findings has not been defined. To assess the clinical relevance of this system, we studied placental findings in 272 singleton neonates born at less than 34 weeks gestation.
