Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) is a form of necrotizing vasculitis with few or no immune deposits. It primarily affects small and medium blood vessels. AAV is classified into three categories, granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangitis (EGPA), and two major ANCAs, proteinase 3 (PR3)-ANCA or myeloperoxidase (MPO)-ANCA are involved in their pathogenesis.

Signaling by thrombopoietin (TPO) in complex with its receptor, c-MPL, is critical for hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) homeostasis and platelet generation. Here we show that TA-316, a novel chemically synthesized c-MPL agonist (CMA), is useful for ex vivo platelet generation from human-induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell-derived immortalized megakaryocyte progenitor cell lines (imMKCLs). Moreover, the generation is clinically applicable, because self-renewal expansion and platelet release is tightly controllable.

Article Synopsis
  • Current therapy for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) involves suppressing the immune response or blocking inflammatory cytokines, but their effects on cancer patients are unclear.
  • The study investigated the impact of three biological agents used for RA—tocilizumab, MR16-1, and etanercept—on lung metastasis in a mouse model with colon cancer cells.
  • Tofacitinib significantly increased lung nodules and decreased natural killer (NK) cell numbers, suggesting it may promote cancer metastasis, while MR16-1 and etanercept had no impact on NK cells or metastasis.

Unlabelled: Despite the favorable toxicity profile at the standard dose of 560 mg daily, the tolerability and toxicology of estramustine phosphate (EMP) have been a cause for concern at administration. Moreover, we do not know whether a lower dose of 280 mg of EMP daily can be administered with some efficacy and fewer side effects. The results of our phase II study suggest that low-dose EMP is a safe treatment option with the same efficacy in patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer.

Purpose: The aim of the present prospective study was to compare material-related complications using biodegradable and titanium miniplates after bilateral sagittal split mandibular setback surgery.

Patients And Methods: The subjects included 200 Japanese adults (67 men and 133 women, age range 18 to 45 years) with jaw deformities diagnosed as mandibular prognathism. All patients were prospectively and consecutively randomized to 2 study groups, receiving biodegradable or titanium fixation plates.

We described a case of postoperative airway obstruction in a patient using a cuff button-like silicone cannula for tracheal stoma. A 59-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis, was admitted to the hospital for total knee arthroplasty. She had been managed by a long-term tracheostomy for rheumatic cricoarytenoid arthritis.
