A central nervous system germinoma is curable in most cases by radiotherapy, and most of the tumor mass disappears promptly after 20-30 doses. However, some germinomas take a longer period to vanish completely from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) scans. In such cases, the tumor may contain components such as teratoma.

A 41-year-old multigravida woman presented with a cervical stage 1b adenosquamous cell carcinoma with metastasis in a transposed ovary. A 57-year-old woman noticed a pulsatile shooting headache in her right temporal region 3 days after extraction of a tooth from the right mandible. The following day, a localized headache over the right superficial temporal artery (STA), low grade fever, and jaw claudication appeared and progressed subacutely. It has been shown that either dual-chamber or atrial pacing may be better than ventricular single-chamber pacing, but the long-term effect of dual-chamber pacing on cardiac sympathetic activity is unclear. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of long-term dual-chamber pacing on cardiac sympathetic activity, compared with atrial pacing and unpaced individuals. We studied 11 patients with dual-chamber pacemakers (Group D), nine with atrial single-chamber pacemakers (Group A) over the long term (mean 44 +/- 36 months) and 10 normal individuals without cardiac pacing.

In order to clarify the abnormality in cortical motor preparation for voluntary muscle relaxation of the hand in patients with focal hand dystonia, Bereitschaftspotentials (BPs) preceding voluntary muscle contraction and relaxation were recorded in eight patients (three with simple writer's cramp and five with dystonic writer's cramp), and were compared with those from 10 normal subjects. Voluntary muscle relaxation: after keeping the right wrist in an extended position for > 5 s, the subject let the hand drop by voluntarily terminating muscle contraction of the wrist extensor without any associated muscle contraction. Voluntary muscle contraction: the right wrist was flexed by voluntarily contracting the wrist flexor muscle.

The levels of 21 protein components of the sera of 45 patients with cancer of the larynx undergoing radiation therapy were determined by a single radial immunodiffusion method before and after radiation therapy. We examined the correlation between changes in serum protein fractions and the prognosis of the patients. The patients with cancer of the larynx were treated with external irradiation of 60Co gammer-rays.

Objective: To compare HLA alleles in the patients with chronic hepatitis C treated with interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) between patients with response to IFN treatment and nonresponse.

Method: Sixty-seven Japanese patients with chronic hepatitis C were treated with daily intramuscular administration of IFN-alpha (6 million units) for 2 weeks followed by three times per week for 22 weeks. Viral loads of hepatitis virus C (HCV), HCV genotypes and HLA antigens were determined just before IFN-alpha treatment.

A 71-year-old woman with autoimmune hemolytic anemia underwent an emergency endocardial patch repair for ventricular septal perforation after acute myocardial infarction. Use of washed red blood cells was effective in averting hemolytic crisis throughout perioperative period. In spite of improvement of her hemodynamics, liver dysfunction which had been present preoperatively deteriorated after the operation.

A major potential application for ex vivo culture of hematopoietic progenitor cells is the treatment of cytopenia following high-dose chemotherapy and hematopoietic transplantation. We have previously postulated that infusion of a sufficient number of neutrophil postprogenitor cells generated by ex vivo culture of CD34+ cells may be able to abrogate neutropenia. In this article, we describe further development of an efficient stromal-free, cytokine-dependent, static culture system for generation of these cells.
