Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a relevant cytokine in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) pathogenesis, potentially activating Janus kinases (JAK)-1, -2, and tyrosine kinase 2 (TYK2), and thus, three signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT)-1, -3 or - 5 pathways. This pilot study aims to explore differences in phosphorylated (p)STAT3 levels among patients with RA, those not classified as RA (nRA), and healthy donors (HD), providing some clues on the relative contribution of each JAK protein to the downstream of the IL-6-induced STAT3 pathway. Clinical data and blood samples from 80 subjects (41 RA, 14 nRA, and 25 HD) were collected.

The mouth and the oropharyngeal system are home to numerous bacterial species that constitute the so-called oral microbiome and play an important role for the integrity of the oral cavity, influencing the overall health of the body, as demonstrated by several studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bacterial modulation potential of a toothpaste (bioredoxin) containing curcumin and melatonin. Both substances have anti-inflammatory properties, as documented in several scientific reports.

The Y chromosome (ChrY) is essential for male sex determination and spermatogenesis. However, recent studies have revealed its broader role in various physiological processes and disease susceptibility, including cancer. A comprehensive literature review was conducted using databases like MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar.

Chronic liver disease (CLD) is a global and worldwide clinical challenge, considering that different underlying liver entities can lead to hepatic dysfunction. In the past, blood tests and clinical evaluation were the main noninvasive tools used to detect, diagnose and follow-up patients with CLD; in case of clinical suspicion of CLD or unclear diagnosis, liver biopsy has been considered as the reference standard to rule out different chronic liver conditions. Nowadays, noninvasive tests have gained a central role in the clinical pathway.

The Renal Expert in Vascular Access (REVAC) is one of the four modules of the Nephrology Partnership for Advancing Technology in Healthcare (N-PATH) project, the first European-wide advanced training course in diagnostics and interventional nephrology, funded by Erasmus+ Knowledge Alliance, a European Commission program. The N-PATH primary goal was to train 40 young European nephrologists in both theoretical knowledge and practical skills related to interventional nephrology. The REVAC module focused on the crucial aspects of vascular access (VA) care in nephrology practice, as a complementary training path to the actual residency program.

Background: Urolithiasis prevalence varies globally between 1-20%, influenced by regional factors. Robotic pyelolithotomy (RPL) presents an interesting alternative to PCNL, considered the gold standard for symptomatic stones smaller than 20 mm, as it carries a risk of significant complications. However, studies on RPL are limited, especially in anatomically complex cases, where RPL proves to be particularly useful.

Purpose: To compare two cohorts of patients submitted to robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) with vs without the use of three-dimensional virtual models (3DVMs).
Methods: We screened a prospective consecutive cohort of 152 patients submitted to RAPN with 3DVM and 1264 patients submitted to RAPN without 3DVM between 2019 and 2022. Propensity score matching analysis (PSMA) was applied.

This review explores various aspects of the HCC TME, including both cellular and non-cellular components, to elucidate their roles in tumor development and progression. Specifically, it highlights the significance of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) and their contributions to tumor progression, angiogenesis, immune suppression, and therapeutic resistance. Moreover, this review emphasizes the role of immune cells, such as tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), and regulatory T-cells (Tregs), in shaping the immunosuppressive microenvironment that promotes tumor growth and immune evasion.

A 48-year-old man with a medical history of hypertension and no family history of prostate cancer presented with abdominal distension, lower abdominal pain, and lower urinary symptoms. Physical examination revealed a palpable mass in the lower abdomen, and a digital rectal examination detected a firm mass on the anterior side of the rectum. Laboratory tests showed an elevated PSA level (7.

Although arteriovenous fistula (AVF) continues to be the vascular access of choice for the hemodialysis, arteriovenous graft (AVG) can be the best choice in certain categories of patients and could have several advantages over AVF in a "patient centered approach" to vascular access. In the clinical management of prosthetic fistulas, color Doppler ultrasound (CDU) is the imaging method of choice for identifying stenosis and other AVG complications. In this review, besides highlighting the pivotal role of CDU in the diagnosis of AVG complications, we will underline the key role that ultrasound can play in identifying those stenosis most likely to cause AVG thrombosis.

Background: Since its introduction 2 decades ago, robotics has been increasingly used for resection of benign and malignant liver lesions. The robotic platform seems to preserve minimally invasive approach benefits, overcoming laparoscopy limitations. Robotic right liver mobilisation represents a key step for many robotic resections from non-anatomical resections of posterosuperior segments to right hepatectomy.

The goal of a vascular access screening program is to detect and preemptively correct hemodynamically significant stenosis, however, a practice pattern allowing to implement such a program still remains to be defined. Achieving balance between the increase in access-related procedures by adopting an aggressive screening program, and the risks associated with the absence of any screening program, i.e.

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) represents a rare neoplasm affecting almost exclusively women of reproductive age. This condition mainly affects the lungs, but extrapulmonary locations such as the pelvis and the retroperitoneum are possible. Clinical evaluation and ultrasound imaging are usually non-specific, and the diagnosis is obtained through surgical excision and histopathological examination.

Background: Ventilation with lower positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) may cause loss of lung aeration in critically ill invasively ventilated patients. This study investigated whether a systematic lung ultrasound (LUS) scoring system can detect such changes in lung aeration in a study comparing lower versus higher PEEP in invasively ventilated patients without acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
Methods: Single center substudy of a national, multicenter, randomized clinical trial comparing lower versus higher PEEP ventilation strategy.
