Background: Swallowing disorders including difficulty swallowing and food bolus obstruction, result in reduced dietary intake-a common occurrence that leads to cachexia in patients with advanced cancer. This study examined the effects of swallowing difficulty and food bolus obstruction on cachexia-related quality of life (QOL).
Methods: This study secondarily analyzed data from a self-reported questionnaire survey of adult patients with advanced cancer at 11 palliative care services.

Patients with schizophrenia often experience problems associated with ordinary exercises of life due to their mental symptoms. Those experiencing problems related to feeding behavior, in particular, are considered to be susceptible to developing Wernicke encephalopathy due to a deficiency in thiamine, the physiological stores of which are limited; however, there are few reported cases, and most of them were accompanied by the classical triad of signs. We report our experience with asymptomatic thiamine deficiency (TD) in a schizophrenia patient.

We sought to clarify the frequency of TD among an institutionalized elderly population with a controlled dietary intake and to identify possible factors related to TD.
Method: We undertook a cross-sectional study of residents in three nursing homes for the elderly as of June 2020.

Background: There is a scarcity of data evaluating contemporary real-world dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) strategies after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
Methods and results: In the OPTIVUS-Complex PCI study multivessel cohort enrolling 982 patients undergoing multivessel PCI, including left anterior descending coronary artery using intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), we conducted 90-day landmark analyses to compare shorter and longer DAPT. DAPT discontinuation was defined as withdrawal of P2Yinhibitors or aspirin for at least 2 months.

Background: Several stent expansion criteria derived from the intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) evaluation have been proposed to predict future clinical outcomes, but optimal stent expansion criteria as a guide during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) are still controversial. There are no studies evaluating the utility of stent expansion criteria along with the clinical and procedural factors in predicting target lesion revascularization (TLR) after contemporary IVUS-guided PCI.
Methods: OPTIVUS-Complex PCI study (Optimal Intravascular Ultrasound Guided Complex Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) multivessel cohort was a prospective multicenter study enrolling 961 patients undergoing multivessel PCI including left anterior descending coronary artery using IVUS with an intention to meet the prespecified criteria for optimal stent expansion.

Objectives: Morphine is effective in alleviating dyspnoea in patients with cancer. We aimed to investigate the effectiveness and safety of morphine administration for refractory dyspnoea in patients with advanced heart failure (HF).
Methods: We conducted a multicentre, prospective, observational study of hospitalised patients with advanced HF in whom morphine was administered for refractory dyspnoea.

Despite standard treatment with systemic corticosteroids and/or antifungal triazoles, a substantial proportion of patients with allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) experience frequent relapses and require long-term treatment despite unfavorable adverse effects. We investigated the efficacy and safety of anti-interleukin (IL)-5/IL-5 receptor α chain (Rα) monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) in patients with ABPA complicated by asthma. ABPA cases treated with anti-IL-5/IL-5Rα mAbs were collected from 132 medical institutes in 2018 and published case reports in Japan.

Objective: Subdural hemorrhage (SDH) has been reported to be the most frequent intracranial hemorrhagic complication following open heart surgery; however, its clinical features and pathophysiology remain unclear. The aim of this retrospective study was to elucidate the incidence, clinical course, and factors associated with the development of symptomatic SDH following heart valve surgery.
Methods: A retrospective review of medical records on the development of symptomatic SDH after heart valve surgery involving cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) from April 2011 to March 2016 was performed.

Purpose: Taste and smell are used to enjoy meals; however, impairments of these sensory perceptions seriously impact health and eating habits. This study is aimed at investigating the impact of taste and smell disturbances on dietary intakes and cachexia-related quality of life (QOL) in patients with advanced cancer.
Methods: Using a self-report questionnaire, we surveyed patients with advanced cancer undergoing treatment at 11 palliative care centers.

Background: Despite increasing reports of thiamine deficiency (TD) among cancer patients, there remain some patients with borderline thiamine concentrations (BTC). However, it is unclear whether such patients subsequently develop TD.
Methods: Here, we report cases of cancer patients progressing to TD within a short time period after presentation with BTC (24-28 ng/ml).

Background: Intermittent Pringle maneuver (PM) is widely performed to reduce blood loss during hepatectomy; however, its impact on clinically relevant post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) remains controversial. This study aimed to assess the impact of PM on PHLF and explore whether PM provides additional value for predicting PHLF.
Methods: Consecutive patients, who underwent hepatectomy without biliary and/or vascular reconstruction between 2011 and 2018 in a single institution, were retrospectively analyzed.

Background: Diabetes is a well-known risk factor for adverse outcomes after coronary revascularization.
Objectives: This study sought to determine high-risk subgroups in whom the excess risks of diabetes relative to nondiabetes are particularly prominent and thus may benefit from more aggressive interventions.
Methods: The study population consisted of 39,427 patients (diabetes: n = 15,561; nondiabetes: n = 23,866) who underwent first percutaneous coronary intervention (n = 33,144) or coronary artery bypass graft (n = 6,283) in the pooled CREDO-Kyoto PCI/CABG (Coronary Revascularization Demonstrating Outcome Study in Kyoto Percutaneous Coronary Intervention/Coronary Artery Bypass Graft) registry.
