Background: Osteoradionecrosis of the jaw (ORN) is a late complication of radiation therapy. Radiation-induced fibrosis is the most likely mechanism for developing ORN, and statins are effective against radiation-induced fibrosis. However, no reports have indicated the direct effectiveness of statins in treating ORN.

Background/aim: Cell-free and concentrated ascites reinfusion therapy (CART) was established for refractory ascites and renovated CART (Keisuke Matsusaki (KM) -CART) has been recently developed especially for malignant ascites; however, the actual clinical efficacy of KM-CART has been rarely reported.
Patients And Methods: We performed 226 KM-CART procedures in 104 patients with malignant ascites in three hospitals from August 2013 to September 2018. Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for ascites data, related complications, symptoms before and after each CART and prognosis after the first CART.

Objective: Intra-soft tissue and intramedullary antibiotic perfusion (iSAP and iMAP), which combine continuous administration of antibiotic solution to the wound and negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT), have been reported to be a useful management approach for hard-to-heal ulcers in the field of orthopaedic surgery. We report the efficacy of this treatment and discuss the key points.
Method: The recipients of this treatment had contaminated fresh severe trauma with a high risk of infection, or hard-to-heal ulcers which were expected to be difficult to manage with conventional NPWT alone.

Background/purpose: The incidence of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw is increasing worldwide, mostly due to the use of antiresorptive agents (ARAs) such as bisphosphonate (BP) and denosumab (Dmab). However, the proportion of BP-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) and Dmab-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (DRONJ) among all ARA-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (ARONJ) cases is not clear; this hinders appropriate treatment, recurrence-prevention planning, and avoidance of unnecessary Dmab withdrawal. Moreover, the causative drug administered at each disease stage remains unknown.

Background: Severe odontogenic infections in the head and neck region, especially necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) and deep neck abscess, are potentially fatal due to their delayed diagnosis and treatment. Clinically, it is often difficult to distinguish NSTI and deep neck abscess in its early stage from cellulitis, and the decision to perform contrast-enhanced computed tomography imaging for detection is often a challenge. This retrospective case-control study aimed to examine the utility of routine blood tests as an adjunctive diagnostic tool for NSTI in the head and neck region and deep neck abscesses.

The objective of this study was to clarify gaze information patterns of nurses gathering patient information using electronic health records. We recorded the electronic health record screen on which nurses' gazes were presented using an eye tracker and analyzed the recorded images. The analysis revealed two types of gaze information patterns of nurses engaged in patient information gathering.

Purpose: In maxillary wisdom tooth extraction, the necessity of CT is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether CT adding to orthopantomography is useful for predicting oroantral perforation during maxillary third molar extraction.
Methods: Various risk factors for oroantral perforation during maxillary third molar extraction were investigated by univariate and multivariate analyses.

Dorsal extension block pinning is a commonly performed surgical technique for acute bony mallet fingers. However, the treatment of chronic bony mallet finger remains controversial. We investigated the use of dorsal extension block pinning with percutaneous curettage for chronic bony mallet fingers.

Background/aim: We previously reported that ranibizumab performed better on visual prognosis than photodynamic therapy (PDT) in a Ranibizumab (ucentis) nd hotodynamic herapy n olypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (LAPTOP) study. To determine if the first-choice treatment, either PDT or intravitreal ranibizumab, has a long-term effect in patients with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV).
Methods: We reviewed medical records of patientsrandomised to either PDT (29 eyes) or ranibizumab (27 eyes) from July 2009 to June 2011 in LAPTOP study.

Aims: To compare the surgical outcome of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for full-thickness macular hole (FTMH) with and without lamellar hole-associated epiretinal proliferation (LHEP).
Methods: This retrospective study included 158 eyes of 158 patients with FTMH treated with PPV. The following variables were analyzed: sex, age, preoperative best corrected visual acuity (pre-BCVA), BCVA 6 months after the surgery (6M-BCVA), the axial length of eye, the minimum diameter of FTMH, the diameter of basal side of FTMH, postoperative continuity of subfoveal ellipsoid zone (EZ) and external limiting membrane (ELM), and the preoperative presence of LHEP.

This retrospective study was performed to investigate the influence of occlusal support and the presence, state, and position of mandibular third molars on the incidence of mandibular angle and condylar fractures. The following variables were investigated: age, sex, cause of fracture, presence and state (impaction, angulation, and the number of roots) of the mandibular third molars, site of the mandibular fracture, presence of occlusal support, duration of intermaxillary fixation, and postoperative complications. Various risk factors for mandibular angle and condylar fractures were investigated by univariate analysis.

Purpose: To compare the effect of pegaptanib versus ranibizumab on exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with small lesion size.
Methods: This is a retrospective study of 81 eyes from 78 patients with exudative AMD treated and followed up over 12 months. Patients with baseline best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) under 20/400 and with a greatest linear dimension of lesion over 4500 μm were excluded from the study.

Purpose: To evaluate the long-term effects of photodynamic therapy (PDT) on different phenotypes of age-related macular degeneration (AMD): typical AMD (tAMD) and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV).
Methods: A multicenter prospective study of 207 eyes of 201 patients (tAMD, 123 eyes; PCV, 84 eyes) treated with PDT. Sex, age, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), greatest linear dimension, and lesion type were evaluated for pretreatment factors.

Nocturnal infusion of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) combined with pamidronate was performed in a 62-year-old male gastric cancer patient with multiple bone metastasis. The patient was administered 500 mg of 5-FU five days a week continuously for 10 hours per day from 21 o'clock to 7 o'clock for 5 months. In addition to 5-FU, 45 mg of pamidronate was administered intravenously every two weeks.

In order to elucidate the mechanisms of diabetic corneal epitheliopathy, we investigated the proliferation of corneal epithelial cells of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th months after the onset of diabetes using 3H-thymidine autoradiography. After the 1st month in diabetic rats, histological examination revealed that corneal epithelial layer was thin, and proliferation of corneal epithelial cells was decreased compared with that of normal untreated rats. After the 2nd month, proliferation of corneal epithelial cells showed no difference from normal rats.

Correlations of hematogenous metastasis with histopathologic variables, preoperative CEA and CA19-9 levels in peripheral (p) venous blood, and those in draining (d) venous blood were examined in 78 patients with colorectal cancer. Out of 10 histopathologic variables, location of venous invasion was most significantly correlated with hematogenous recurrence: the rate (11%) of v0 and/or sm-pm v(+) in 50 patients without the recurrence was significantly lower than that (89%) in 28 patients with the recurrence. On the other hand, the rate (68%) of ss-extra(+) in the latter was significantly higher than that (32%) of the former.

CA 19-9 and CEA were found in 95% and 45% of these metastasis respectively. The same distributional and localized patterns in the metastasis as were found in the primary lesions amounted to 77% and 41% for CA 19-9, and 45% and 27% for CEA, respectively.
