Pollution in urban environments is a major health concern for humans as well as the local wildlife and aquatic species. Anthropogenic waste and discharge from storm drainage accumulate nutrients and environmental contaminants in local water systems. Locating contaminated sites using water samples over the vast landscape is a daunting task.

Background: Drug seeking behavior occurs in response to environmental contexts and drug-associated cues. The presence of these pervasive stimuli impedes abstinence success. β-adrenergic receptors (β-ARs) have a long-standing historical implication in driving processes associated with contextual memories, including drug-associated memories in substance use disorders.

Evidence of SARS-CoV-2 Antibody in Mississippi White-Tailed Deer.

Vector Borne Zoonotic Dis

October 2024

Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, Mississippi, USA.

Early detection and monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 infections in animal populations living in close proximity to humans is crucial for preventing reverse zoonosis of new viral strains. Evidence accumulated has revealed widespread SARS-CoV-2 infection among white-tailed deer (WTD), () populations in the United States except in the southeast region. Therefore, the objective was to conduct surveillance for evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection among WTD in Mississippi.

Hair and nails are human biomarkers capable of providing a continuous assessment of the concentrations of elements inside the human body to indicate the nutritional status, metabolic changes, and the pathogenesis of various human diseases. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry are robust and multi-element analytical techniques able to analyze biological samples of various kinds for disease diagnosis. The primary objective of this review article is to focus on the major developments and advances in LIBS and XRF for the elemental analysis of hair and nails over the last 10-year period.

Department of Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy, University of Georgia College of Pharmacy, 1000 Jefferson Street, USA.

Background: VRE infections increased in 2020. High-dose daptomycin (≥10 mg/kg) has shown mortality benefit over other regimens, though daptomycin resistance is increasing. Limited data exist on the practice patterns of ID pharmacists for VRE bloodstream infections (VRE BSIs).

White-tailed deer (, WTD) spread communicable diseases such the zoonotic coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which is a major public health concern, and chronic wasting disease (CWD), a fatal, highly contagious prion disease occurring in cervids. Currently, it is not well understood how WTD are spreading these diseases. In this paper, we speculate that "super-spreaders" mediate disease transmission via direct social interactions and indirectly via body fluids exchanged at scrape sites.

The 2021-22 Professional Affairs Committee was charged to (1) Develop a resource guide for member institutions and faculty regarding payment for the practice-related activities of pharmacy faculty; (2) Nominate at least one person for an elected AACP or Council Office; and (3) Consider ways that AACP can improve its financial health. This report describes the methodology and content utilized for the development of an online resource guide for member institutions, faculty, and practice sites regarding the integration of clinical faculties' patient care services into patient care settings, including models for payment and value-based payment structures that can be utilized to support the practice-related activities of faculty. The committee offers a revision to a current association policy statement, a proposed policy statement as well as recommendations to AACP and suggestions to colleges and schools of pharmacy pertaining to the committee charges.

Recent studies have shown that the gut microbiome changes brain function, behavior, and psychiatric and neurological disorders. The Gut-Brain Axis (GBA) provides a neuronal pathway to explain this. But exactly how do commensal bacteria signal through the epithelial layer of the large intestine to activate GBA nerve afferents? An in vitro model is described.

The Modification of Offspring Stress-Related Behavior and the Expression of , and by a Western-Pattern Diet in .

Int J Mol Sci

August 2022

Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology, University of California, Riverside, 900 University Ave, Riverside, CA 92521, USA.

The impact of early developmental experience on neurobiological pathways that may contribute to the association between diet and behavior have not yet been elucidated. The focus of the current study was to determine whether the impact of prenatal stress (PS) could be mitigated by a diet that stimulates the same neuroendocrine systems influenced by early stress, using a mouse model. Behavioral and genetic approaches were used to assess how a Western-pattern diet (WPD) interacts with PS and sex to impact the expression of anxiety-like behavior in an open-field arena, as well as the expression of the glucocorticoid receptor in the hippocampus, D1 dopamine receptors in the nucleus accumbens, and D2 dopamine receptors in the ventral tegmental area.

The role of the pneumococcal polysaccharide capsule is largely unclear for keratitis, an ocular inflammatory disease that develops as a result of bacterial infection of the cornea. In this study, capsule-deficient strains were compared to isogenic parent strains in their ability to adhere to human corneal epithelial cells. One isogenic pair was further used in topical ocular infection of mice to assess the contribution of the capsule to keratitis.

Benzvalyne: Real or imaginary?

J Chem Phys

January 2022

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Mississippi, University, Mississippi 38655, USA.

Benzvalyne (CH) is a bicyclic structural isomer of o-benzyne that some typically trusted levels of theory do not report as a minimum on the potential energy surface (PES). The structure was found to be a C minimum at the MCSCF, MP2, coupled-cluster single double, coupled-cluster single double triple (CCSDT)-1b, and CCSDT-2 levels of theory. Density functionals at the B3LYP-D3, B2PLYP-D3, and M06-D3 levels also produced a minimum structure.
