Objectives: To evaluate the success rate of shock wave lithotripsy and identify predictors of stone-free status after shock wave lithotripsy for ureteral stones, focusing on the impact of stones remaining in the same location for 2 months (SSL2).

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 501 patients with ureteral stones treated with shock wave lithotripsy by expert surgeons (each with over 1000 shock wave lithotripsy operations) at a single Japanese institution in 2020. Logistic regression analysis identified predictors of stone-free status, including stone length, skin-to-stone distance, stone density (Hounsfield Unit), Hounsfield Unit above/below the stone, stone position, and duration of stone at the same location (SSL2).

Background: Although the impact of aerobic exercise (AE) and resistance training (RT) on peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients is well established, the impact of exercise programs on residual kidney function (RKF) has not been elucidated.

Methods: Patients were randomly assigned to either the exercise (= 25) or control groups (= 30). Patients in the exercise group performed AE three times a week and RT twice a week at home for 24 weeks.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to evaluate the impact of exercise therapy (ET) on renal function in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients who had a recent renal biopsy.
  • The trial involved 50 patients who participated in either a 24-week exercise program or usual care, measuring changes in kidney function and protein levels in urine.
  • Results indicated that while ET did not improve kidney function overall, it showed potential benefits for patients with IgA nephropathy, helping to maintain their renal function and manage urinary protein levels better compared to those not receiving ET.

Background: Several monitors have been developed that measure stroke volume (SV) in a beat-to-beat manner. Accordingly, Stroke volume variation (SVV) induced by positive pressure ventilation is widely used to predict fluid responsiveness.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the ability of two different methods to predict fluid responsiveness using SVV, stroke volume variation by esCCO (esSVV) and stroke volume variation by FloTrac/VigileoTM (flSVV).

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between glaucoma and cardiac abnormalities. We evaluated 581 patients with open-angle glaucoma (285 men and 296 women) and 595 individuals without glaucoma (273 men and 322 women). All of the participants underwent visual field testing using a Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer (30-2 program), an electrocardiogram (ECG), and blood pressure measurement.

Anatomy education for medical students in a virtual reality workspace: A pilot study.

Clin Anat

January 2022

Department of Neurosurgery, Tulane Center for Clinical Neurosciences, Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed a challenge for many medical schools, as they have had to adjust their curricula into an online format. This was particularly problematic for anatomy courses as in person dissections have historically been preferred for providing students with a three-dimensional learning environment. In this study, we aim to share our experience with conducting anatomy lectures for medical student using a virtual reality (VR) workspace.

Easy three-dimensional scanning technology for anatomy education using a free cellphone app.

September 2021

Department of Neurosurgery, Tulane Center for Clinical Neurosciences, Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought difficult times to anatomy educators and medical/dental students. Under normal circumstances, gross anatomy classes give students opportunities to touch and observe human bones and cadaveric tissues, thus enhancing their understanding; such morphology is difficult to learn from textbooks alone. As many studies have shown, three-dimensional (3D) technologies used in online lectures can serve as alternatives to real specimens for providing knowledge of anatomy.

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Graduate School, Tokyo, Japan.

The visual acuity is very important for glaucoma patients in their lives. The purpose of this study was to examine about the correlation of visual acuity and visual field (VF) parameters or optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters in patients with glaucoma. We evaluated 210 eyes of 210 patients (110 men and 100 women; mean age, 69.

The COVID-19 pandemic and mandatory social distancing has brought challenges to anatomy educators who generally need in-person classes. The purpose of this study is to share the experience of a distant online lecture on a surgical procedure and related anatomy in a three-dimensional (3D) virtual reality (VR) workspace and to compare it with reported teaching methods, that is, an in-person class and a Zoom online class. The lecture was delivered by three authors of this article in a VR workspace that enables people to meet through VR.

Aim: Our aim was to examine whether serum levels of placental growth factor (PlGF) and soluble endoglin (sEng) at 19-25 and 26-31 weeks of gestation were associated with the occurrence of the 9-block categorization of placenta weight (PW) and fetal/placenta ratio (F/P ratio).

Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study in 1391 women with singleton pregnancy. Serum levels of PlGF and sEng were measured by enzyme immunosorbent assay.

A 83-year-old female presented with a painful, palpable mass of the breast, which had been growing rapidly for the past few months. The physical examination revealed a 5×5 cm, elastic, hard, mobile mass with a smooth surface in the right breast. Ultrasound confirmed a 6×4 cm hypoechoic mass with regular borders in the inferior lateral quadrant of the right breast, which required core-needle biopsy to establish diagnosis.

Aim: The difference of placental weight (PW) and fetal/placental weight ratio (F/P) Z scores by mode of delivery is unclear. To investigate such differences and the actual conditions underlying the imbalance between fetal and placental growth.

Methods: The data from Japanese database 2013 were assessed.

Intrauterine Fetal and Neonatal Death between Small for Date and Non-Small for Date in Small for Gestational Age Infants.

Int J Med Sci

December 2019

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, 1-20-1 Handayama, Higashi-ku, Hamamatsu city, Shizuoka 431-3192, Japan.

To demonstrate the differences in intrauterine fetal deaths and neonatal deaths between small for date (SFD) and Non-SFD neonates by applying a novel classification from both Z scores of placental weight (PW) and fetal/placental weight ratio (F/P) to small for gestational age (SGA) neonates. From 93,034 placentas/infants of mothers who vaginally delivered a singleton infant (Japan Perinatal Registry Network database 2013), SGA (n=7,780) was chosen according to the reference to Japanese neonatal growth chart. They were divided into two subgroups: SFD (body weight and height less than the 10 percentile, n=3,379) and Non-SFD (only body weight less than the 10 percentile, n=4,401).

Background: Cigarette smoking in patients with asthma leads to poor symptom control. As patients who are current smokers have been excluded from enrollment in many clinical trials on asthma, there are few reports on the treatment in current smokers with asthma. In this study, we aimed to assess how respiratory physicians manage asthma in current smokers in Japan.
