We report on a measurement technique that quantifies the adhesive force between multi-layers of graphene flakes and the cell wall of live Escherichia coli cells using atomic force microscopy (AFM) in-fluid Peak Force- Quantitative Nanomechanical Mapping mode. To measure the adhesive force, we made use of the negative charge of E. coli cells to allow them to stick to positively charged surfaces, such as glass or silicon, that were covered by poly-L-Lysine.

Distress tolerance is linked to unhealthy eating through pain catastrophizing.

Low distress tolerance, an important component of emotion regulation, is a risk factor for unhealthy eating. Identifying factors which explain the link between distress tolerance and unhealthy eating can advance the understanding of problematic eating and inform prevention and treatment of obesity and eating disorders. The present study examines pain catastrophizing as a mediator between distress tolerance and unhealthy eating in a nonclinical population, which has received little attention despite being a risk factor for unhealthy eating behaviors.

Dual fuel diesel and natural gas heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) operate on a combination of the two fuels simultaneously. By substituting diesel for natural gas, vehicle operators can benefit from reduced fuel costs and as natural gas has a lower CO2 intensity compared to diesel, dual fuel HGVs have the potential to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the freight sector. In this study, energy consumption, greenhouse gas and noxious emissions for five after-market dual fuel configurations of two vehicle platforms are compared relative to their diesel-only baseline values over transient and steady state testing.

Several scholars have recommended using data from neuropsychological tests to develop interventions for reading and mathematics. The current study examined the effects of using neuropsychological data within the intervention process with meta-analytic procedures. A total of 1,126 articles were found from an electronic search and compared to inclusion criteria, which resulted in 37 articles that were included in the current study.

Acute moderate exercise does not attenuate cardiometabolic function associated with a bout of prolonged sitting.

Epidemiological studies suggest that prolonged sitting increases all-cause mortality; yet, physiological causes underpinning prolonged sitting remain elusive. We evaluated cardiometabolic function during prolonged sitting (5 h) in 10 adults with and without 30 min of moderate exercise leading up to the sitting. Mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR) and posterior tibial artery blood velocity were measured at baseline and every hour subsequently.

Developing a sustainable foot care clinic in a homeless shelter within an academic-community partnership.

Nursing faculty are confronted with the need to design community learning activities with vulnerable populations to prepare students for nursing practice. The creation of sustainable academic-community partnerships with agencies providing care to underserved populations meets this challenge. This article describes the development and implementation of a foot care clinic in a homeless shelter, created through a model of curricular integration, faculty engagement, and a long-term academic-community partnership.

Using controlled experiments, the ability of the trematode parasite Stegodexamene anguillae, encysted within its intermediate fish host, the common bully Gobiomorphus cotidianus, was tested to indirectly detect the presence of its definitive host by exposing infected G. cotidianus to chemical cues from the definitive host, the short-finned eel Anguilla australis. The trematode can abbreviate its normal life cycle and achieve precocious maturity in G.

Multitasking, a media-driven bias toward dramatic scenarios, and an emphasis on meeting institutional goals in the form of documentation have led to a culture of action-based practice, which interferes with nurses' ability to simply be with patients. In order for nurses to be fully present with their patients, the cultural norm of multitasking and the emphasis on doing must be reexamined within the context of patient care.

Bargaining with patriarchy: former female coaches' experiences and their decision to leave collegiate coaching.

The purpose of this study was to better understand the experiences of former female coaches and their decision to terminate their careers. A feminist perspective and mixed-methods (surveys and interviews) were used to allow for a richer understanding of their experiences. The survey findings, which included 121 former female coaches, suggest that time and family commitments were the main reasons they left coaching.

How to build a course in mathematical-biological modeling: content and processes for knowledge and skill.

Biological problems in the twenty-first century are complex and require mathematical insight, often resulting in mathematical models of biological systems. Building mathematical-biological models requires cooperation among biologists and mathematicians, and mastery of building models. A new course in mathematical modeling presented the opportunity to build both content and process learning of mathematical models, the modeling process, and the cooperative process.

Allied restorative functions training in Minnesota: a case study.

In 2003, the Minnesota Dental Practice Act was modified to allow dental hygienists and assistants to place amalgam, composite, glass ionomer, and stainless steel crowns. The concept of utilizing allied professionals to perform expanded functions has been suggested as a way to increase access to care and productivity. A continuing education course was offered to provide required certification for interested dental practitioners (N=12).

Genetic filtering and optimal sampling of Schistosoma mansoni populations.

Allelic variation in 6 microsatellite markers was compared between frozen Schistosoma mansoni eggs and laboratory-passaged worms originating from the same 5 fecal samples obtained from Brazilian residents. Based on allelic richness values, the number of alleles detected per locus did not differ between egg and worm DNA templates. However, our ability to score loci differed between these DNA templates, with worms providing more scored loci per individual than eggs.
