Healthcare is increasingly impacted by chronic short staffing of nurses, which causes and is caused by increased nurse burnout and decreased retention. Nurses' unions seek to address these problems by proposing safer nurse-to-patient ratios, retention bonuses for working through the COVID-19 pandemic, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) stockpiles, sabbatical leaves, measures aimed at reducing workplace violence, and maintaining or increasing wages and benefits to keep nurses at the bedside. Chronic short staffing and burnout directly affect the quality and availability of patient care-as the International Council of Nurses has pointed out, there is no healthcare without healthcare workers.

Article Synopsis
  • The type IX secretion system (T9SS) helps bacterial pathogens infect hosts, and its activation is regulated by a signaling cascade, with PorX being a key protein that could be targeted for drug development.
  • Structural analysis shows that PorX has a unique enzyme domain similar to alkaline phosphatase, indicating its involvement in previously unlinked nucleotide and lipid signaling pathways.
  • PorX acts as a zinc sensor and is crucial for the secretion of virulence factors in pathogenic bacteria, suggesting it could be an effective target for strategies to disrupt T9SS and reduce virulence.

August 2024

Department of Biology, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT, USA.

The acquisition of an acoustic template is a fundamental component of vocal imitation learning, which is used to refine innate vocalizations and develop a species-specific song. In the absence of a model, birds fail to develop species typical songs. In zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), tutored birds produce songs with a stereotyped sequence of distinct acoustic elements, or notes, which form the song motif.

Effects of caudal fin size on tail-flip jump performance.

Zoology (Jena)

January 2024

Minnesota State University Mankato, Department of Biological Sciences, 242 Trafton Science Center South, Mankato, MN 56001, United States. Electronic address:

Fishes are generally considered to be fully aquatic, but some voluntarily strand themselves on land to escape poor water conditions, predators, or to exploit terrestrial niches. The tail-flip jump is a method of terrestrial locomotion performed by small fishes without apparent morphological specialization, but few studies have investigated the role the caudal fin has on the tail-flip jump. We hypothesized that fish with larger caudal fins would perform shorter individual tail-flip jumps and not be able to sustain jumping in extended terrestrial excursions.

As the electronics industry is integrating more and more new molecules to utilize them in logic circuits and memories to achieve ultra-high efficiency and device density, many organic structures emerged as promising candidates either in conjunction with or as an alternative to conventional semiconducting materials such as but not limited to silicon. Owing to rotaxane's mechanically interlocked molecular structure consisting of a dumbbell-shaped molecule threaded through a macrocycle, they could be excellent nanomachines in molecular switches and memory applications. As a nanomachine, the macrocycle of rotaxane can move reversibly between two stations along its axis under external stimuli, resulting in two stable molecular configurations known as "ON" and "OFF" states of the controllable switch with distinct resistance.

Countercontrol is a Skinnerian operant concept that posits that an individual's attempts to exert control over another person's behavior may evoke a countercontrolling response from the person being controlled that functions to avoid or escape the potentially aversive conditions generated by the controller. Despite Skinner's historical concerns regarding the detrimental effects of countercontrol in terms of hindering optimal societal growth and cultural evolution, the concept has not been widely applied within behavior analysis. Drawing from recent developments in rule-governed behavior and relational frame theory, this article seeks to explicate countercontrol from a contemporary behavior analytic perspective and presents several modern-day societal applications.
