Transitioning Cell Culture CURE Labs from Campus to Online: Novel Strategies for a Novel Time.

Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) provide a way for students to gain research experience in a classroom setting. Few examples of cell culture CUREs or online CUREs exist in the literature. The Cell Biology Education Consortium (CBEC) provides a network and resources for instructors working to incorporate cell-culture based research into the classroom.

Methylglyoxal influences development of Caenorhabditis elegans via lin-41-dependent pathway.

Methylglyoxal is a highly reactive dicarbonyl compound. It can be obtained either endogenously through biological enzymatic/non-enzymatic pathways or exogenously via the uptake of certain foods and beverages, such as Manuka honey. Studies about its biological properties are quite controversial, though the majority reported a positive association between methylglyoxal and certain pathologies.

College student preferences of telepsychiatry.

Objective: To identify differences in preferences related to telepsychiatry among college students who have and have not been diagnosed with a mental health condition in the last year.

Participants: Students ( = 537) at a medium-sized Midwestern university ( = 21 years; 71% female).

Methods: A quantitative, causal-comparative design using an adapted version of the National College Health Assessment (NCHA).

Functional Movement Screen Detected Asymmetry & Normative Values Among College-Aged Students.

Background: The Functional Movement Screen (FMS™) is a popular test used by sports medicine professionals to identify dysfunctional movement patterns by analyzing mobility and stability during prescribed movements. Although the FMS™ has been a popular topic of research in recent years, normative data and asymmetries in college-aged students have not been established through research.

Purpose: The objective was to determine normative FMS™ scores, report frequency counts for FMS™ asymmetries, and determine if the number of sports seasons and number of different sports an individual participated in during high school varied between university students that showed FMS™ identified asymmetries.

A mathematical representation of protein binding sites using structural dispersion of atoms from principal axes for classification of binding ligands.

Many researchers have studied the relationship between the biological functions of proteins and the structures of both their overall backbones of amino acids and their binding sites. A large amount of the work has focused on summarizing structural features of binding sites as scalar quantities, which can result in a great deal of information loss since the structures are three-dimensional. Additionally, a common way of comparing binding sites is via aligning their atoms, which is a computationally intensive procedure that substantially limits the types of analysis and modeling that can be done.

Cognitive Focus.

Philosophers of mind and language who advance causal theories face a sort of conjunction problem. When we say that the thing had in mind or the thing referred to is a matter of what causally impacted the thinker or speaker, we must somehow narrow down the long conjunction of items in a causal chain, all of which contributed to the having in mind, but only one of which becomes the object of thought or the linguistic referent. Here, I sketch a notion of cognitive focus intended to do this narrowing.

Inside the Undergraduate Immunology Classroom: Current Practices that Provide a Framework for Curriculum Consensus.

Although immunological research has become increasingly important in recent decades for understanding infectious and immune-mediated diseases, immunological pedagogy at the undergraduate level has lagged behind in reports of evidence-based scholarship. To address the need for a renewed emphasis on immunology education and to describe the current status of undergraduate education in immunology, an online survey of instructors with experience in teaching immunology was conducted. The survey investigated the effects of instructors' level of teaching experience, target student population, and course components on the emphasis given to certain immunology subtopics in their courses.

The effects of climate change on African agricultural productivity growth revisited.

This paper analyzes the effects of climate change on African agricultural total factor productivity (TFP) growth and test whether agricultural TFP levels are converging in the region. The study uses cross-country balanced panel data covering 35 countries from 1981 to 2010 and a technological catching-up model based on the Ricardian analysis estimated by Feasible Generalized Least Square (FGLS) regression. Historical country-wide rainfall and temperature are climate factors included in the model.

Epidermal Club Cells in Fishes: A Case for Ecoimmunological Analysis.

Epidermal club cells (ECCs), along with mucus cells, are present in the skin of many fishes, particularly in the well-studied Ostariophysan family Cyprinidae. Most ECC-associated literature has focused on the potential role of ECCs as a component of chemical alarm cues released passively when a predator damages the skin of its prey, alerting nearby prey to the presence of an active predator. Because this warning system is maintained by receiver-side selection (senders are eaten), there is want of a mechanism to confer fitness benefits to the individual that invests in ECCs to explain their evolutionary origin and maintenance in this speciose group of fishes.

Role of Nutrition Education in Pharmacy Curriculum-Students' Perspectives and Attitudes.

Unlabelled: Many pharmacists report they lack nutritional knowledge and believe the best time to educate pharmacists about nutrition is during pharmacy school.

Purpose: This study was conducted to determine if today's pharmacy students receive education in nutrition and if they realize the importance of a nutrition course.

Methods: Ninety-five pharmacy students attending pharmacy school were surveyed in two pharmacy schools in the United States.

Educational Intervention for Bupropion Abuse Prevention.

Background: Bupropion is being abused due to effects that are comparable with methamphetamine and cocaine. Current research indicates several interventions that can prevent prescription medication abuse.

Objectives: A research study was performed at two healthcare organizations to evaluate whether education on prevention-based interventions increased self-efficacy of healthcare staff in addressing potential and ongoing bupropion abuse and whether the education reduced the rate of bupropion prescribing.

A Generalized Equation for Prediction of VO2peak from a Step Test.

This study aimed to develop an equation to reduce variability of VOpeak prediction from a step test and compare VOpeak prediction from the new equation to the Queen's College Step Test (QCST). The development group (n=86; 21.7±2 years) was utilized to develop the SDState step test equation to predict relative VOpeak.

Service learning within community-engaged research: Facilitating nursing student learning outcomes.

The objective of this manuscript is to describe a method of integrating baccalaureate nursing student service-learning experiences within a randomized controlled trial conducted in a community setting to facilitate student learning and expose students to the nursing scientist role. Placing students in a research service-learning experience involved several steps beginning with finding a nursing program for potential collaboration where this service-learning opportunity would be a natural fit with course content and formalizing the collaboration between the two institutions. Upon receipt of research grant funding, researchers and course faculty worked to navigate logistics and place students within the service-learning experience.

Care coordination is the deliberate organization of patient care activities between two or more participants (including the patient) involved in a person's care to facilitate the appropriate delivery of health care services. Organizing care involves the marshalling of personnel and other resources needed to carry out all required patient care activities. It is often managed by the exchange of information among participants responsible for different aspects of care [1].

is a respiratory fungal pathogen and an allergen, commonly detected in flooded indoor environments and agricultural settings. Previous studies in Balb/c mice showed that repeated inhalation of live and dry spores, without any adjuvant, elevated allergic immune response and airway remodeling. Sex-specific differences can influence host-pathogen interactions and allergic-asthma related outcomes.

Bowel function and care: Guidelines for the care of people with spina bifida.

Purpose: Bowel dysfunction, such as constipation and fecal incontinence, has a significant impact on health, activities of daily living, and quality of life among people with spina bifida. Secondary complications may result from bowel dysfunction and include urologic dysfunction, loss of skin integrity, shunt (hydrocephalus) function, as well as loss of social opportunities and employability.

Methods: Using a consensus building methodology, the guidelines for management of bowel dysfunction in spina bifida were written by experts in the field of spina bifida and bowel function and care.

Purpose: Skin-related issues have a significant impact on health, activities of daily living, and quality of life among people with spina bifida. Data presented by select clinics that participate in the National Spina Bifida Patient Registry reported that 26% of individuals had a history of pressure injuries with 19% having had one in the past year. The spina bifida community lack direct guidelines on prevention of these and other skin related issues.

The association between hope and quality of life in haemodialysis patients.

Background: Hope is important for patients with end-stage renal disease receiving haemodialysis (HD) and hope is associated with quality of life (QoL). Studies examining hope among the HD population are limited and, as far as the authors know, have not been undertaken in Jordan.

Aims: To examine levels of hope and QoL and to examine the association between hope and QoL in HD patients in Jordan.

Revisiting Kuo and Belland's exploratory study of undergraduate students' perceptions of online learning: minority students in continuing education.

COVID-19 has forced educators to make rapid changes to their pedagogy in order to shift from face-to-face instruction to online delivery. In this time of rapid change, Kuo and Belland's (Educ Technol Res Dev 64:661-680, 2016) exploratory study that highlights the types of interactions that correlated with African American students' success in an undergraduate course could provide instructors with ideas about how to create more equitable online courses. Thus, this article describes how instructors might consider the cultural and racialized experiences of their students through an asset lens as they design online coursework.

Transitions in alcohol use over time: a survival analysis.

Background: The current study examined the predictors of the onset of alcohol use as well as predictors of remission and relapse, both from heavy drinking and from alcohol dependence. Similarities and differences in both clinical and psychosocial predictors across the transitions were examined.

Methods: A sample of men from the Vietnam Era Twin Registry (N = 1769) completed an assessment of lifetime drinking history, which allowed age markers for starting and stopping different drinking patterns.

Early Career Nurses' Experiences of Providing Family Nursing Care: Perceived Benefits and Challenges.

Faculty at Minnesota State University, Mankato (USA) developed a family-focused baccalaureate curriculum to address gaps between evidence and practice with families that have been linked to undergraduate nursing education. The purpose of this study was to understand the perceptions of new graduate nurses in providing family-focused nursing care in practice settings. A descriptive design focused on narrative data was used to identify the nurses' perceived benefits and challenges of caring for families in their current nursing practice.

The intersection of food insecurity and health for rural Malawian women at the end of life.

Background: One of the poorest countries in the world, Malawi's palliative care system is under-resourced, and one-third of the population is food-insecure.

Aims: This study describes the lived experience of female palliative care patients, and their caregivers, and aimed to: (1) analyse their physical, spiritual and mental health needs; and (2) analyse best palliative nursing practice for patients at the end of life. An unexpected finding was the impact of food insecurity on the women and their caregivers.

Multifunctional bilateral muscle control of vocal output in the songbird syrinx.

Songbirds produce complex vocalizations by coordinating neuromuscular control of syrinx, respiratory system, and upper vocal tract. The functional roles of syringeal muscles have been documented mainly with correlative data, which have suggested that synergistic activation plays a role in the fine control of vocal features. However, the specific involvement of individual muscles in achieving this fine control is still largely unknown.
