Deep brain stimulation (DBS), a proven treatment for movement disorders, also holds promise for the treatment of psychiatric and cognitive conditions. However, for DBS to be clinically effective, it may require DBS technology that can alter or trigger stimulation in response to changes in biomarkers sensed from the patient's brain. A growing body of evidence suggests that such adaptive DBS is feasible, it might achieve clinical effects that are not possible with standard continuous DBS and that some of the best biomarkers are signals from the cerebral cortex.

Exposure to reactive oxygen species (ROS) can induce DNA-protein crosslinks (DPCs), unusually bulky DNA lesions that block replication and transcription and play a role in aging, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative disorders. Repair of DPCs depends on the coordinated efforts of proteases and DNA repair enzymes to cleave the protein component of the lesion to smaller DNA-peptide crosslinks which can be processed by tyrosyl-DNA phosphodiesterases 1 and 2, nucleotide excision and homologous recombination repair pathways. DNA-dependent metalloprotease SPRTN plays a role in DPC repair, and SPRTN-deficient mice exhibit an accelerated aging phenotype and develop liver cancer early in life.

Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAb) is an urgent bacterial threat to public health, with only a few treatment options and a > 50% fatality rate. Although several resistance mechanisms are understood, it is still impossible to predict which mutations are most likely to occur. Here, we demonstrate that independent samples of Ab, exposed to different carbapenems with escalating concentrations, show concentration- and carbapenem-dependent trends in β-lactamase-isoform expression.

Quantum computers promise a qualitative speedup in solving a broad spectrum of practical optimization problems. The latter can be mapped onto the task of finding low-energy states of spin glasses, which is known to be exceedingly difficult. Using D-Wave's 5000-qubit quantum processor, we demonstrate that a recently proposed iterative cyclic quantum annealing algorithm can find deep low-energy states in record time.

Serine 31 is a phospho-site unique to the histone H3.3 variant; mitotic phospho-Ser31 is restricted to pericentromeric heterochromatin, and disruption of phospho-Ser31 results in chromosome segregation defects and loss of p53-dependant G cell-cycle arrest. Ser31 is proximal to the H3.

Objective: While the relationship between smoking and subarachnoid hemorrhage is well established, data regarding the probability of detecting unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs) in smokers remain sparse. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between smoking and the likelihood of identifying UIAs in healthy asymptomatic patients who underwent brain imaging for indications unrelated to UIAs.
Methods: A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines.

Objective: Despite excellent functional outcomes after shoulder stabilization surgery, a substantial number of patients fail to return to sports (RTS) at the preinjury level. The psychological factors affecting RTS postsurgery have been underexplored. This scoping review aimed to identify and analyze potential psychological factors influencing the decision to RTS after shoulder stabilization surgery.

Rutile GeO and related materials are attracting interest due to their ultrawide band gaps and potential for ambipolar doping in high-power electronic applications. This study examines the growth of rutile SnGeO films through oxygen-plasma-assisted hybrid molecular beam epitaxy (hMBE). The film composition and thickness are evaluated across a range of growth conditions, with the outcomes rationalized by using density functional theory calculations.

Universal shade flowable composites have been introduced to mimic tooth structure with reduced color mismatch and reduced chair time and cost. However, the polymerization shrinkage of resin material may lead to sensitivity and restoration failure. The purpose of this study was to compare the polymerization shrinkage of recently introduced universal shade flowable resin-based composites using both wet and dry density methods.

Introduction: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) are used to treat various malignancies. They block the inhibitory signals of tumor cells and enhance the inflammatory cascade, which results in tumor killing. However, this can lead to unchecked inflammation throughout the body, leading to various adverse effects.

Plant-plant interactions are major determinants of the dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems. There is a long tradition in the study of these interactions, their mechanisms and their consequences using experimental, observational and theoretical approaches. Empirical studies overwhelmingly focus at the level of species pairs or small sets of species.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), characterized by insulin resistance, is closely associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Cerebrovascular dysfunction is manifested in both T2DM and AD, and is often considered as a pathological link between the two diseases. Insulin signaling regulates critical functions of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and endothelial insulin resistance could lead to BBB dysfunction, aggravating AD pathology.

As rates of obesity rise worldwide, incidence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly referred to as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, is increasing, worsening the burden of healthcare systems. The council of the Federation of International Societies for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (FISPGHAN) identified the topic of MASLD epidemiology, treatment, and prevention as a global priority issue to be addressed by an expert team, with the goal to describe feasible and evidence-based actions that may contribute to reducing MASLD risk. The FISPGHAN member societies nominated experts in the field.

Background: Sepsis remains the leading cause of in-hospital death and one of the costliest inpatient conditions in the United States, while treatment delays worsen outcomes. We sought to determine factors and outcomes associated with a missed emergency physician (EP) diagnosis of sepsis.
Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of a prospective single-center observational cohort of undifferentiated, critically ill medical patients (September 2020-May 2022).

Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) deposition is unequally distributed across space and time, with inputs to terrestrial ecosystems impacted by industry regulations and variations in human activity. Soil carbon (C) content normally controls the fraction of mineralized N that is nitrified (ƒ), affecting N bioavailability for plants and microbes. However, it is unknown whether N deposition has modified the relationships among soil C, net N mineralization, and net nitrification.

As the number of cerebral aneurysms treated with flow diverters continues to increase, it is important to understand what factors influence not only thrombus formation within the aneurysm cavity but also fibrin accumulation across the device and its associated disruption and blockage of the inflow stream. Both processes contribute to the eventual occlusion of the aneurysm or its continued patency and incomplete occlusion which may require future re-treatment. To investigate fibrin accumulation on flow diverters placed across the neck of cerebral aneurysms, a previously developed computational model that couples flow and fibrin dynamics is used in combination with experimental in vitro models of cerebral aneurysms treated with flow diverters.

The metabolic conversion of aromatic amines to N-acetylated forms in skin and keratinocytes depends on N-acetyltransferase-1 (NAT1). Common hair color ingredient such as para-phenylenediamine (PPD) causes allergic contact dermatitis. We explored how different electronic substituents on PPD aided NAT1 enzyme biotransform oxidative arylamine (AA) compounds G1-G13 by N-acetylation, NAT-1 activity assays, metabolism, and in vitro clearance investigations in human keratinocytes, while identifying NAT-1 protein levels by Western blot and qRT-PCR.
