Background: Preservatives are often necessary components of commercial products. Large-scale North American studies on preservative allergy are limited.

Objective: To evaluate demographics, positive patch test reactions (PPTRs), clinical relevance, and trends for preservatives tested by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group.

Preventing Myocardial Injury Following Non-Cardiac Surgery: A Potential Role for Preoperative Antioxidant Therapy with Ubiquinone.

Over 240 million non-cardiac operations occur each year and are associated with a 15-20% incidence of adverse perioperative cardiovascular events. Unfortunately, preoperative therapies that have been useful for chronic ischemic heart diseases, such as coronary artery revascularization, antiplatelet agents, and beta-blockers have failed to improve outcomes. In a pre-clinical swine model of ischemic heart disease, we showed that daily administration of ubiquinone (coenzyme Q, CoQ) enhances the antioxidant status of mitochondria within chronically ischemic heart tissue, potentially via a PGC1α-dependent mechanism.

NonREM Disorders of Arousal and Related Parasomnias: an Updated Review.

Parasomnias are abnormal behaviors and/or experiences emanating from or associated with sleep typically manifesting as motor movements of varying semiology. We discuss mainly nonrapid eye movement sleep and related parasomnias in this article. Sleepwalking (SW), sleep terrors (ST), confusional arousals, and related disorders result from an incomplete dissociation of wakefulness from nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep.

Hand eczema in children referred for patch testing: North American Contact Dermatitis Group Data, 2000-2016.

Background: Little is known about the aetiologies and relevant allergens in paediatric patients with hand eczema (HE).

Objectives: To characterize the aetiologies and determine the proportion of positive and currently relevant allergens in children/adolescents (age < 18 years) with HE referred for patch testing.

Patch Testing to Diphenylguanidine by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (2013-2016).

Background/objectives: Carba mix (CM, 3% petrolatum) contains 1,3-diphenylguanidine (DPG, 1%), zinc diethyldithiocarbamate (1%), and zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate (1%). Because DPG is a component of CM, DPG is often not tested separately. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of concomitant reactions to CM and DPG.

Cutaneous Reactions to Aluminum.

: Cutaneous exposure to aluminum may occur via contact with metal items, medications, and personal care products. Despite the widespread use of aluminum, allergic contact dermatitis is relatively rare. Sensitization is often incidentally identified during patch testing with aluminum-based chambers.

Noninvasive strategies for colorectal cancer screening: opportunities and limitations.

Purpose Of Review: In the United States, only 67% of patients are up to date with colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. While colonoscopy is highly sensitive and specific for CRC and precursor lesion detection and removal, it is invasive, expensive and resource heavy. Hence, there is an unfulfilled need for multiple modality CRC screening that can improve current CRC screening rates and may be resource effective strategies when used in conjunction with a colonoscopy program.

Contact dermatitis to personal care products is increasing (but different!) in males and females: North American Contact Dermatitis Group data, 1996-2016.

Background: Personal care products (PCPs) are commonly responsible for allergic contact dermatitis and irritant contact dermatitis. PCP use was historically associated with females, but male-targeted PCPs are increasingly being marketed.

Objective: To characterize and compare males with PCP-related contact dermatitis (MPCPs) and females with PCP-related contact dermatitis (FPCPs).

Alcohol-Mediated Renal Sympathetic Neurolysis for the Treatment of Hypertension: The Peregrine™ Infusion Catheter.

Renal sympathetic denervation using conventional non-irrigated radiofrequency catheters has potential technical shortcomings, including limited penetration depth and incomplete circumferential nerve damage, potentially impacting therapeutic efficacy. Against this background, second generation multi-electrode, radiofrequency and ultrasound renal denervation systems have been developed to provide more consistent circumferential nerve ablation. Irrigated catheters may allow deeper penetration while minimizing arterial injury.

CT-Overlay Hybrid Imaging to Facilitate Sentinel Cerebral Protection System Deployment in the Presence of an Anomalous Vertebral Artery Originating From the Aortic Arch During Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation.

Stroke remains an important risk during transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Though the use of the double-filter Sentinel cerebral protection system (Boston Scientific, Marlborough, MA, USA) may lower the stroke risk, the deployment of this device requires manipulation within the aortic arch and cranial arch vessels potentially causing dislodgment of atherosclerotic debris in the process thereby possibly offsetting its benefit with regards to reducing cerebral embolization. Apart from patient selection, minimizing maneuvering during deployment may improve the safety of device deployment.

Transcatheter Mitral Valve-in-Ring Implantation in the Flexible Adjustable Attune Annuloplasty Ring.

Transcatheter mitral valve-in-ring implantation (TMViR) poses unique challenges when compared to valve-in-valve implantation due to the large variation in the different annuloplasty rings used. Annuloplasty rings are often classified according to whether they are complete or incomplete, rigid, semi-rigid, or flexible, and whether their three-dimensional geometry is saddle-shaped or flat. A limited number of annuloplasty rings are available which are adjustable allowing the surgeon to increase or decrease the size of the ring once it has been sutured in place.

Risk of Genitourinary Malignancy in the Renal Transplant Patient.

Objective: To better understand the risk of genitourinary malignancies in the renal transplant patient. Currently, no consensus exists regarding screening and intervention, with much of the clinical decision-making based on historical practices established before recent progress in immunosuppression protocols and in genitourinary cancer diagnosis and management.

Methods: A database of all solid organ transplants performed at the University of Minnesota from 1984 to 2019 was queried for renal transplant recipients in whom development of subsequent urologic malignancies (prostate, bladder, renal, penile, and testicular cancer) was found.
