The contribution of hospital-based home health services in pulmonary diseases: Current Practice in Turkey.

Background: The medical management of chronic respiratory diseases becomes more difficult with the increase in the rate of the elderly population. Monitoring and treating chronic respiratory diseases at home are more comfortable for both the patient and their relatives. Therefore, countries need to develop policies regarding home health services (HHS) according to the state of their social, cultural, and financial infrastructure.

Clinical characteristics of appendiceal diverticular disease.

Background: Appendiceal diverticular disease (ADD) is a rare pathology which is associated with an increased mortality risk due to rapid perforation and high rates of neoplasm. In our study, we aimed to evaluate the clinical and histopathological characteristics of ADD with differences from acute appendicitis (AA) diagnosis and to determine the association with neoformative processes.

Kruppel-Like Transcription Factor-4 Gene Expression and DNA Methylation Status in Type 2 Diabetes and Diabetic Nephropathy Patients.

Background/aim: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the most serious microvascular complications in diabetic patients. The kruppel-like transcription factor-4 (KLF-4) affects the expression of genes involved in the pathogenesis of DN. The present study aims to identify the KLF-4 expression and DNA methylation (DNAMe) status in patients with type-2 diabetes (T2D) and DN and to reveal the contribution of the KLF-4 to the development of DN.

Retinal nerve fibre and ganglion cell inner plexiform layer analysis by optical coherence tomography in asymptomatic empty sella patients.

To investigate the clinical importance of the thicknesses of the retinal nerve fibre (RNFL) and ganglion cell and inner plexiform layer (GCL+) by spectral domain optic coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in asymptomatic empty sella (ES) patients. In this cross-sectional, non-randomized prospective study, 44 ES patients and 74 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals were evaluated. All the patients and controls competed an automated 30-2 visual field (VF) test.

An Early Developmental Marker of Deficit versus Nondeficit Schizophrenia.

People with schizophrenia and primary negative symptoms (deficit schizophrenia) differ from those without such symptoms (nondeficit schizophrenia) on risk factors, course of illness, other signs and symptoms, treatment response, and biological correlates. These differences suggest that the 2 groups may also have developmental differences. A previous study found that people with schizophrenia have a wider palate than comparison subjects.

Oxidative stress markers, trace elements, and endocrine disrupting chemicals in children with Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

In this study, we aimed to investigate whether bisphenol A (BPA) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) exposure have any association with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and its biomarkers and to determine whether oxidative stress biomarkers and trace element levels showed any alterations in children with HT. We found that superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities are lower in HT group from control (24% and 46%, respectively,  < 0.05).

The methylation status of NKCC1 and KCC2 in the patients with refractory temporal lobe epilepsy.

Background And Purpose: Methylation is a key epigenetic modification of DNA and regarding its impact on epilepsy, it is argued that "DNA methylation may play an important role in seizure susceptibility and maintenance of the disorder". DNA methylation status of KCC2 (SCL12A5) and NKCC1 (SCL12A2) associated with refractory temporal lobe epilepsy was investigated in our study.

Methods: Thirty-eight patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) who were diagnosed by video EEG monitoring and 32 healthy control subjects were included in the study.

Evaluation of Voice Quality in Patients With Vocal Fold Polyps: The Size of a Polyp Matters or Does it?

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the correlation between morphological features of vocal fold polyps (VFPs) and subjective/objective voice parameters.

Methods: Perceptual evaluations, aerodynamic and acoustic tests were performed on 47 patients with VFPs. Still images were captured from video and the morphological features associated with the size of VFP were quantified.

Restless Legs Syndrome/Willis-Ekbom Disease in Multiple Sclerosis Patients with Spinal Cord Lesions.

Introduction: Spinal cord lesions in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients are associated with a higher risk of restless legs syndrome (RLS). In this study, we investigated the prevalence of RLS, sleep quality, presence and severity of depression, and the relationship of these parameters with cervical cord lesions in patients with RRMS.

Methods: This study was conducted in the outpatient multiple sclerosis clinic of Marmara University Hospital between October 2013 - February 2014, including 93 patients with the diagnosis of MS.

The impact of intravitreal dexamethasone implant (Ozurdex®) on retrobulbar hemodynamics in patients with diabetic macular edema and retinal vein occlusions.

To evaluate the effect of single intravitreal dexamethasone implant (Ozurdex) on ocular blood flow velocities in patients with diabetic macular oedema (DME) and retinal vein occlusions (RVO). This prospective non-randomized interventional study included injected and fellow eyes of 12 patients with DME and of 16 patients with RVO treated with intravitreal Ozurdex. Colour Doppler Ultrasonography (CDU) measures of the central retinal artery (CRA), posterior ciliary artery (PCA), ophthalmic artery (OA) those are peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity (EDV), resistive index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) were performed in both injected and uninjected eyes before injection, at one week, one month after injection, and prior to re-injection.

Greater occipital nerve block in migraine prophylaxis: Narrative review.

Objectives: The importance and popularity of peripheral nerve block procedures have increased in the treatment of migraine. Greater occipital nerve (GON) block is a commonly used peripheral nerve block method, and there are numerous researches on its use in migraine treatment.

Materials And Methods: A search of PubMed for English-language randomized controlled trials (RCT) and open studies on greater occipital nerve block between 1995 and 2018 was performed using greater occipital nerve, headache, and migraine as keywords.

Olfactory bulb atrophy in migraine patients.

Objective: Osmophobia and headache triggered by odors are commonly seen in migraine, and these are symptoms that differentiate migraine from other primary headaches. Since these odor-related symptoms are disease-specific, we aimed to measure the volume of olfactory bulb and depth of olfactory sulcus in migraine patients.

Patients And Method: A total of 93 subjects, consisting of 62 episodic migraine (32 with osmophobia, 30 without osmophobia) patients and 31 healthy controls, were included in this study.

Bi-allelic mutations in MYL1 cause a severe congenital myopathy.

Congenital myopathies are typically characterised by early onset hypotonia, weakness and hallmark features on biopsy. Despite the rapid pace of gene discovery, ∼50% of patients with a congenital myopathy remain without a genetic diagnosis following screening of known disease genes. We performed exome sequencing on two consanguineous probands diagnosed with a congenital myopathy and muscle biopsy showing selective atrophy/hypotrophy or absence of type II myofibres.

Absolute dose verification of static intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) with ion chambers of various volumes and TLD detectors.

Aim: This study aims at examining absolute dose verification of step-and-shoot intensity modulated radiation treatment (IMRT) of prostate and brain patients by use of ion chambers of two different volumes and thermoluminescent detectors (TLD).

Background: The volume of the ion chamber (IC) is very important for absolute dose verification of IMRT plans since the IC has a volume average effect. With TLD detectors absolute dose verification can be done measuring the dose of multiple points simultaneously.

In this study, the presence of genes responsible for the pathogenicity and antibiotic resistance profile of enterococci isolated from various foodstuffs of animal origin was investigated. The percentage prevalence of enterococci was 54.1% (203/375) and the average count was found to be 3.

The impact of surgery for trochanteric femur fracture on sexuality in men and their female partners.

Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the effects of trochanteric femur fracture treatment methods on erectile functions of the patients and on sexual functions with their female partners.

Materials And Methods: A total of 43 patients with trochanteric femur fracture who underwent proximal femoral nail (PFN) or proximal femur locking compression plate (PF-LCP) surgery were included in the study. The PFN implant was applied to group 1 ( n = 23) and the PF-LCP implant to group 2 ( n = 20).

Regional differences of Turkey in risk factors of newborn hearing loss.

Objective: The aim of this study was to discover Turkish regional differences in the risk factors of newborn hearing loss.

Method: A multi-centered retrospective design was used. A total of 443 children, registered to the national newborn hearing screening programme, with bilateral hearing loss, from five different regions of Turkey, were evaluated in terms of the types of hearing loss, the degree of hearing loss, the types of risk factors, parental consanguinity, age at diagnosis and age of auditory intervention, respectively.
