This study explores the adaptation of a Positive Youth Development (PYD) programme for the Indigenous Quichua community in Guangaje, Ecuador, which faces chronic poverty and low educational attainment. In May, June 2023 we conducted focus groups with school teachers and indigenous community leaders, parents and middle school, high school and college students. We found a disconnect between students' aspirations for higher education and adults' emphasis on practical and vocational training.

Background: Osteocytes are crucial for detecting mechanical stimuli and translating them into biochemical responses within the bone. The primary cilium, a cellular 'antenna,' plays a vital role in this process. However, there is a lack of direct correlation between cilium length changes and osteocyte mechanosensitivity changes.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a lethal malignancy characterized by rapid growth. The interaction between tumor cells and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) significantly influences HCC progression. CCL15, a CC chemokine family member, is predominantly expressed in HCC and strongly correlates with tumor size, indicating its critical role in HCC growth.

Oral delivery of peptide drugs remains one of the most formidable challenges in the frontier of pharmaceutical research. Peptide drugs typically suffer from exceptionally low oral bioavailability, primarily attributed to rigorous enzymatic degradation within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, limited ability to traverse the enterocyte barrier, and significant first-pass hepatic metabolism. Absorption of peptide drugs via the lymphatic route could potentially bypass intracellular lysosome degradation and hepatic first-pass metabolism.

The aging process is associated with a loss of bone mass and an accumulation of senescent cells, which is under epigenetic control. Morphological and molecular analysis revealed a notable reduction in bone mass and alveolar crest height in aged mice, accompanied by increased levels of senescent mouse jaw bone marrow stem cells (mJBMSCs). To investigate whether specific transcription factors are involved, assay for transposase-accessible chromatin with sequencing (ATAC-seq) was performed on mJBMSCs isolated from 2-, 4-, 8-, and 20-month-old mice.

Cryopreservation induces various cryodamages to the structural or functional aspects of boar sperm, resulting in the deterioration of sperm quality. The extent of cryodamages varies significantly among different individual boars. In our study, 50 boars with either good sperm freezability (GSF) or poor sperm freezability (PSF) were selected from a population of 402 boars.

The excessive utilization of antibiotics gives rise to the development of bacterial resistance, the deterioration of animal immune functions, the increase in mortality rates, and the undermining of human immunity. Therefore, there is an urgent necessity to explore new antimicrobial agents or alternatives to tackle bacterial resistance. We investigated tea tree oil (TTO), a pure natural plant essential oil extracted from Melaleuca leaves, which exerted efficient antibacterial activities.

Saprolegniasis is a common fungal disease in aquaculture. It will form white flocculent hyphae on the skin of fish, and the hyphae may grow inward and penetrate into muscle tissue, which will reduce the immunity of the body and eventually lead to death. However, there are still some gaps in the mechanism of the fish body surface against the invasion of Saprolegnia.

The concentration variation of luteinizing hormone (LH) regulates the cell cycle of oocyte meiosis and significantly affect the whole reproductive cycle. Sensitively quantifying the LH biomarker therefore plays an important role for reproductive disease diagnosis. By coupling a new low background catalytic redox recycling strategy with hybridization chain reaction (HCR), we propose a highly sensitive bio-electrochemical aptamer LH sensing method.

Climate change has significantly altered fish population dynamics and marine ecosystems worldwide, resulting in multiple ecological, economic and social risks for sustainable fisheries. As a hotspot of global warming, China is anticipated to face with extensive climate-driven changes in marine fisheries and ecosystems, but a clear and adaptative management strategy has not been established. In this study, we assessed the climate adaptiveness of current fisheries management and alternative strategies with diverse management priorities.

This work elucidated the digestion behavior of low-oil phase Pickering emulsion gel (LOPPEG) stabilized by whey protein isolate (WPI) -γ-Oryzanol (γO) aggregated particles and interfacial adsorption properties of its simulated digestion products. Initially, following simulated digestion, WPI-γO LOPPEG exhibited lower free fatty acid release and protein digestibility compared to WPI LOPPEG. WPI-γO LOPPEG maintained lower interfacial tension and higher interfacial thickness than WPI LOPPEG.

The traditional gelatin extraction methods (acid-base) may hinder to their green applications due to mass energy consumption and pollution. Herein, we constructed a clean and sustainable gelatin extraction method, investigated the molecular mechanism of microwave treatment (0-360 min) and freeze-thaw on the gelatin extraction from the perspective of the crosslinking degree and hydrogen bonds. Microwave (0-60 min) can improve the hydrolysis degree (DH) and expose more enzyme cleavage sites of collagen by destroying the intramolecular and intermolecular covalent crosslinking.

Ether-based electrolytes are known for their high stability with lithium metal anodes (LMAs), but they often exhibit poor high-voltage stability. Structural optimization of ether-based solvent molecules has been proven to effectively broaden the electrochemical window of these electrolytes, yet the optimization rules within cyclic ethers remain unclear. Herein, we investigate the impact of methyl substitution positions on the molecular properties of 1,3-dioxolane (DOL), a commonly used cyclic ether.
