Photocatalytic reduction of nitrate to N holds great significance for environmental governance. However, the selectivity of nitrate reduction to N is influenced by sacrificial agents and the kinds of cocatalysts (such as Pt and Ag). The presence of unconsumed sacrificial agents can aggravate environmental pollution, while noble metal-based cocatalysts increase application costs.

Engineering yeast to produce fraxetin from ferulic acid and lignin.

Appl Microbiol Biotechnol

January 2025

Frontiers Science Center for Synthetic Biology and Key Laboratory of Systems Bioengineering (Ministry of Education), School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Tianjin University, Tianjin, China.

Lignin, the most abundant renewable source of aromatic compounds on earth, remains underexploited in traditional biorefining. Fraxetin, a naturally occurring flavonoid, has garnered considerable attention in the scientific community due to its diverse and potent biological activities such as antimicrobial, anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neurological protective actions. To enhance the green and value-added utilization of lignin, Saccharomyces cerevisiae was engineered as a cell factory to transform lignin derivatives to produce fraxetin.

Characterization of a novel D-sorbitol dehydrogenase from Faunimonas pinastri A52C2.

Appl Microbiol Biotechnol

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Industrial Biotechnology, Ministry of Education, Jiangnan University, 1800 Lihu Avenue, Wuxi, 214122, China.

The enzyme D-sorbitol dehydrogenase (SLDH) facilitates the conversion of D-sorbitol to L-sorbose. While current knowledge of this enzyme class predominantly centers on Gluconobacter oxydans, the catalytic properties of enzymes from alternative sources, particularly their substrate specificity and coenzyme dependency, remain ambiguous. In this investigation, we conducted BLASTp analysis and screened out a novel SLDH (Fpsldh) from Faunimonas pinastri A52C2.

Key Laboratory of Green Chemical Process of Ministry of Education, Hubei Key Laboratory of Novel Chemical Reactor and Green Chemical Technology, School of Chemical Engineering & Pharmacy, Wuhan Institute of Technology, Wuhan 430073, P.R. China.

Electrochemical oxidative cross-dehydrogenative-coupling (CDC) is an ideal strategy to conduct the C3-alkoxylation of imidazo[1,2-]pyridine, but it remains a challenge owing to limitation imposed by the use of alkyl alcohols and carboxylic acids. Herein, we report a mild and efficient 2-electrode constant-potential electrolysis of imidazo[1,2-]pyridine with hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) to produce various imidazo[1,2-]pyridine HFIP ethers. Mechanistic studies indicated that the electrooxidation reaction might involve radical coupling and ionic reaction.

Key Laboratory of Polymer Processing Engineering of the Ministry of Education, National Engineering Research Center of Novel Equipment for Polymer Processing, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Technique and Equipment for Macromolecular Advanced Manufacturing, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou 510641, People's Republic of China.

Passive daytime radiative cooling offers a promising approach to address energy, environmental, and safety issues caused by global warming. However, the contradiction between high radiative cooling performance and long-lasting ultraviolet (UV) durability is a primary limitation at the current stage. Here, inspired by the ability of epidermal cells and palisade cells on the leaf surface to protect internal leaf structures (such as chloroplasts and nuclei) under drought and high-temperature conditions, a double-layer passive radiative cooling (PRC) porous membrane, which consists of an upper protective layer densely packed with highly ultraviolet-reflective inorganic particles and a bottom cooling layer doped with a variety of optically characterized inorganic particles, was developed to overcome these challenges.

Realizing zero-threshold population inversion plasmonic doping.

Nanoscale

January 2025

Key Laboratory of 3D Micro/Nano Fabrication and Characterization of Zhejiang Province, School of Engineering, Westlake University, 18 Shilongshan Road, Hangzhou 310024, Zhejiang Province, China.

Lowering the population inversion threshold is key to leveraging quantum dots (QDs) for nanoscale lasing and laser miniaturization. However, optical realization of population inversion in QDs has an inherent limitation: the number of excited electrons per QD is bound by the absorbed photons. Here we show that one can break this population limit and realize near-zero threshold inversion plasmonic doping.

Sub-micrometer LiPSCl regulated cathodic Li kinetics in sulfide based all-solid-state batteries.

Phys Chem Chem Phys

January 2025

School of Metallurgy and Environment, Central South University, Changsha, Hunan, 410083, P. R. China.

The practical applications of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) are hindered by poor Li kinetics in electrodes due to the inadequate contact between the cathode active materials (CAMs) and solid-state electrolytes (SSEs). Therefore, improving the contact interface between CAMs and SSEs is necessary to improve the cathodic Li kinetics by increasing the lithium-ion transport sites. To address this issue, sub-micrometer LiPSCl (SU-LPSC) particles of high specific areas were utilized to fabricate cathodes with high mass loading.

Chromatin remodeling, which involves the histone-to-protamine exchange process during spermiogenesis, is crucial for sperm nuclear condensation and male fertility. However, the key regulators and underlying molecular mechanisms involved in this process remain largely unexplored. In this study, we discovered that deficiency in the family with sequence similarity 170 member A (Fam170a) led to abnormal sperm nuclear morphology and male infertility in mice, mirroring the observation of very low Fam170a transcription levels in sperm of infertile men with teratozoospermia.

January 2025

MOE Key Laboratory of Evolution & Marine Biodiversity and Institute of Evolution & Marine Biodiversity, Ocean University of China, Qingdao 266003, China.

DNA N6-methyladenine (6mA) is a potential epigenetic mark involved in gene transcription in eukaryotes, yet the regulatory mechanism governing its methyltransferase (MTase) activity remains obscure. Here, we exploited the 6mA MTase AMT1 to elucidate its auto-regulation in the unicellular eukaryote Tetrahymena thermophila. The detailed endogenous localization of AMT1 in vegetative and sexual stages revealed a correlation between the 6mA reestablishment in the new MAC and the occurrence of zygotically expressed AMT1.
