Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the influences of hemodialysis (HD) on activities of daily living (ADL) in patients with hip fracture.

Methods: This study included 28 patients (14 HD and 14 non-HD patients) with acute hip fracture. The effects of variables such as age, sex, surgical procedure, length of hospital stay, serum albumin, C-reactive protein (CRP), number of physical therapy units, and functional independence measure (FIM) were assessed.

Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the ability of soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) and modified suPAR with National Early Warning Score (NEWS) for detecting mortality in elderly emergency patients who are older than 70 years.

Methods: This is a secondary analysis of our previous study, which was a single-center prospective pilot study, carried out for 21 months in the emergency department of a secondary emergency institution in Japan. This study was carried out between September 16, 2020, and June 21, 2022.

Soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) is a strong and nonspecific inflammatory biomarker that reflects various immunologic reactions, organ damage, and risk of mortality in the general population. Although prior research in acute medical patients showed that an elevation in suPAR is related to intensive care unit admission and risk of readmission and mortality, no studies have focused on the predictive value of suPAR for preventable emergency attendance (PEA). This study aims to evaluate the predictive value of suPAR, which consists of a combination of white blood cell count (WBC), C-reactive protein (CRP), and the National Early Warning Score (NEWS), for PEA in older patients (>65 years) without trauma who presented to the emergency department (ED).

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) as a leading cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children, identifying effective urine analysis methods to detect kidney dysfunction.
  • Researchers compared the efficacy of urine alpha 1-microglobulin (AMCR) and beta 2-microglobulin (BMCR) ratios against conventional urine dipstick tests and other parameters like protein and albumin-to-creatinine ratios.
  • Results showed that AMCR and BMCR are more effective for detecting CAKUT in children with stage 3-4 CKD, with high sensitivity and specificity, but further validation for AMCR is needed. *

Objective: To determine if the various three-dimensional structures of bioscaffolds affect wound healing by investigating the efficacy of different porcine-derived urinary bladder matrix (UBM) structures in treating murine diabetic wound healing.

Methods: The authors studied three different UBM structures: particulate (pUBM), one-layer freeze-dried sheet (fdUBM), and three-layer laminated sheet (lmUBM). Scanning electron microscopy images of the structures were used to calculate a wound-exposed surface-area-to-volume ratio.

Acute hand edema often results in loss of fine hand motor activities, especially without appropriate care. There is still no reliable and easy to use method to measure hand edema. In this study, we tested a handheld three-dimensional (3D) scanner on plastic male and female hand models using a whole hand measuring method (WM) and a modified method (MM) which excluded fingers.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibody reaction after administration of the BNT162b2 vaccine, and to reveal the factors that affect antibody production. This prospective study was carried out in the Association of EISEIKAI Medical and Healthcare Corporation Minamitama Hospital, in Tokyo, Japan, from April 15, 2021 to June 09, 2021. All our hospital's workers who were administered the BNT162b2 vaccine as part of a routine program were included in this study.

Background And Aim: The small intestine plays a central role in gut immunity, and enhanced lymphocyte migration is involved in the pathophysiology of various enteropathy. Bile acid (BA) is closely related to lipid metabolism and gut microbiota and essential for gut homeostasis. However, the effects of BA on gut immunity have not been studied in detail, especially on the small intestine and lymphocyte migration.

Background: Proprioceptive feedback is a reflex dislocation prevention mechanism that contributes to shoulder joint stability. In patients with Bankart lesions, the anteroinferior glenohumeral ligament complex is damaged and reduces the likelihood of tensile stress. As a result, proprioceptive feedback does not work, which leads to instability.

Introduction: The spread of coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) is a serious problem all over the world. Several immunochromatography kits of the antibody for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have been developed, but it is still unclear which kits have high diagnostic value. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy rate for antibody detection of each immunochromatography kit and reveal which kit has a high diagnostic value for antibody detection.

Background: Cholangiocarcinoma and secondary biliary cirrhosis can develop after liver resection for hepatolithiasis and are causes of hepatolithiasis-related death. We determined potential risk factors for hepatolithiasis-related death and subsequent cholangiocarcinoma, including precancerous lesions such as biliary intraepithelial neoplasia (BilIN) and intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct, in patients undergoing liver resection for hepatolithiasis.

Methods: The study cohort included 62 patients who underwent liver resection for hepatolithiasis without concomitant cholangiocarcinoma and had surgical specimens available for pathological examination.

Background: Shoulder 36 (Sh-36) is an original quality of life measure for shoulder lesions with high reliability and validity; however, in some cases, especially in those with a Bankart lesion, we observed no improvement in Sh-36 during the postoperative follow-up. Sh-36 may be less effective for a certain shoulder lesion. This study aimed to compare the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of Sh-36 among different representative diagnoses of shoulder lesions.

Introduction: To increase survival rates of patients with severe trauma from road traffic accidents, Japan launched the D-Call Net (DCN) system, which utilizes advanced automatic collision notification technology to dispatch doctors by helicopter. The DCN system began in November 2015 and, as of October 2019, has dispatched doctors 4 times.

Cases: Case 1-Canceled because trauma was mild.

Background: Renal artery stenting is performed for renal artery injuries to preserve renal function and prevent renovascular hypertension. However, its indications are controversial and its long-term prognosis remains unknown. Here, we evaluate the characteristics and long-term outcomes of renal artery stenting for blunt renal artery injuries at our institution.

We have identified a novel SPAG9-JAK2 fusion in a B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with t(9;17)(p24;q21) and a poor outcome, using paired-end transcriptome sequencing. Homozygous and hemizygous deletions of CDKN2A/2B, and hemizygous deletions of PAX5, BTG1, CDK6, ADARB2, and IKZF1 were also identified by multiple ligation-dependent probe amplification and single nucleotide polymorphism array analyses. Having both a tyrosine kinase-activating rearrangement and genomic lesions affecting lymphoid transcription factors suggested that the leukemia was of the Philadelphia chromosome (Ph)/BCR-ABL1-like ALL subtype and that JAK2 inhibitors might be able to overcome this aggressive ALL with SPAG9-JAK2.

We identified connexins 26 and 32 in human oral mucosa. The presence of the connexins indicates the presence of gap junctions in this tissue. However, immunofluorescence study found no significant differences in the expression of the connexins between patients with aphthons stomatitis and controls.
