We study the quantum dynamics in response to time-dependent external potentials of the edge modes of a small fractional quantum Hall fluid composed of few particles on a lattice in a bosonic Laughlin-like state at filling ν=1/2. We show that the nonlinear chiral Luttinger liquid theory provides a quantitatively accurate description even for the small lattices that are available in state-of-the-art experiments, away from the continuum limit. Experimentally accessible data related to the quantized value of the bulk transverse Hall conductivity are identified both in the linear and the non-linear response to an external excitation.

  • Adolescent water polo players often face shoulder injuries, and this study aimed to see if preseason attributes like range of motion, flexibility, strength, and core endurance could predict future injuries.
  • The study involved 53 young male players, dividing them into two groups: those with prior shoulder injuries and those without, followed by tracking their injury status a year later.
  • Results showed that players with previous injuries had significantly poorer flexibility and endurance, indicating that early screening for these factors might help prevent future shoulder injuries.

The gamma probe is a commonly used detector for localizing sentinel lymph nodes after the injection of radiopharmaceuticals. In recent years, studies have focused on improving the features of gamma probes to achieve more consistent localization of the radiotracer uptake. As part of this effort, a novel gamma probe prototype based on an active shielding was developed, and its characteristics, including sensitivity, resolution and shielding effectiveness, were determined.

Unveiling Off-Target Mutations in CRISPR Guide RNAs: Implications for Gene Region Specificity.

CRISPR J

June 2024

Molecular Biology and Genetics Department of Transgenic Cell Techologies and Epigenetic Application and Research Center (TRGENMER), Üsküdar University, Istanbul, Türkiye.

The revolutionary CRISPR-Cas9 technology has revolutionized genetic engineering, and it holds immense potential for therapeutic interventions. However, the presence of off-target mutations and mismatch capacity poses significant challenges to its safe and precise implementation. In this study, we explore the implications of off-target effects on critical gene regions, including exons, introns, and intergenic regions.

Article Synopsis
  • The Pre-Pottery Neolithic site of Aşıklı Höyük, occupied roughly 10,300 to 9,300 years ago in Central Anatolia, is associated with the early domestication of sheep, transitioning from residential stabling to open pasturing over time.
  • Genetic analysis of 629 mitochondrial genomes revealed unexpected high genetic diversity during occupation, contradicting the earlier assumption of a domestication bottleneck.
  • A significant demographic bottleneck was instead identified later in the Neolithic, leading to the dominance of a specific mitochondrial haplogroup in southwestern Anatolia that influenced sheep populations in Europe and today’s global sheep diversity.

Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Department of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Property, Cumhuriyet Mahallesi Silahşör Caddesi No:71, Bomonti/Şişli, 34380 İstanbul, Turkey.

This work presents the characterization results of Middle Iron Age pottery fragments excavated in Van Fortress, the historical capital of the Urartu Kingdom, located on the eastern coast of Lake Van in Turkey. A multi-analytical approach combining optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) has been employed to investigate the mineralogical composition of ceramics. Micro-Raman spectrometer was also used for the characterization of the pigments used for decoration.

Aims: To develop a deep learning model, with the aid of ChatGPT, for thyroid nodules, utilizing ultrasound images. The cytopathology of the fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) serves as the baseline.

Material And Methods: After securing IRB approval, a retrospective study was conducted, analyzing thyroid ultrasound images and FNAB results from 1,061 patients between January 2017 and January 2022.

View Article and Find Full Text PDF

Background And Objectives: Early detection and diagnosis of thyroid nodule types are important because they can be treated more effectively in their early stages. The types of thyroid nodules are generally stated as atypia of undetermined significance/follicular lesion of undetermined significance (AUS/FLUS), benign follicular, and papillary follicular. The risk of malignancy for AUS/FLUS is typically stated to be between 5 and 15 %, while some studies indicate a risk as high as 25 %.

In this study, we investigated the impact of chemical etching on the light output and energy resolution of LYSO scintillators using simple, affordable laboratory equipment. We found that etching with phosphoric acid at temperatures between 180 °C and 190 °C improved the light output and energy resolution compared to mechanically polished crystals, even after minimal etching times. Our results show that with 7.

In the production of geometries that traditional methods cannot produce, it is seen that additive manufacturing (AM) technology, which has come to the fore, has been used extensively in conformal cooling channel (CCC) applications in recent years. This study, conducted within the scope of CCC's use of applied mold cores in automotive industry plastic part production, aimed to reduce the cycle time in the injection printing process. The v1 geometry, which gives the analysis results for ideal printing quality from the channel geometries developed with three different design approaches, is produced with direct metal laser sintering, which is an AM laser sintering technology, and the injection printing cycle time has been reduced by 38%.

Instituto de Bioingeniería, Universidad Miguel Hernández, Campus de Elche, 03202 Elche, Spain.

We report the molecular characterization of an ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS)-induced mutation that causes albinism and lethality at the seedling stage in . We identified the mutation using a mapping-by-sequencing approach that uses Fisher's exact tests to detect changes in allele frequencies among the seedlings of an F mapping population, which had been pooled according to their phenotypes (wild-type or mutant). After purifying genomic DNA from the plants of both pools, the two samples were sequenced using the Illumina HiSeq 2500 next-generation sequencing platform.

Department of Health Informatics, Graduate School of Informatics, Middle East Technical University, 06800 Ankara, Turkey; Department of Biological Sciences, Middle East Technical University, 06800 Ankara, Turkey. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - The study maps human genetic diversity across regions like Anatolia, Iran, and the Aegean, highlighting changes from the early Neolithic period to more complex societal structures using a combination of ancient and modern genomes.
  • - Findings reveal that genetic diversity increased over time, with early Holocene populations in Southwest Asia and the East Mediterranean becoming more similar, followed by a divergence starting in the Bronze Age due to external gene flow, described as "the expanding mobility model."
  • - The research also uncovers a trend of increasing male bias in admixture events throughout the Holocene, which is measured using specific genetic distance methods that are more effective than traditional F statistics.
