Article Synopsis
  • Global uncertainties have led Western nations to undertake evacuations, exemplified by France's Operation SAGITTAIRE in Sudan during a civil war in April 2023, which involved a sophisticated multi-modal evacuation of over 1,000 individuals from 84 nationalities.
  • The operation involved special forces and medical teams, functioning around the clock for 96 hours without fatalities, executing various surgical procedures and utilizing the Joint Medical Surgical Center in Djibouti as a key medical facility.
  • The findings from the operation stress the necessity of a robust health support system for such military interventions, advocating for a comprehensive approach in Non-combatant Evacuation Operations as part of French military doctrine.

Article Synopsis
  • The proximal tibial epiphyseal inclination, measured through the tibial bone varus angle (TBVA), serves as a potential indicator of recovery success after knee osteotomy, but traditional x-ray methods have shown inconsistencies in measurement.
  • This study aimed to assess the reliability of measuring TBVA and related angles using digital imaging by three orthopaedic surgeons analyzing 100 radiographs in a blinded format.
  • Results indicated that while the visibility scores for the epiphyseal scar had fair interobserver reliability, key angles like TBVA, GPTP angle, and a modified version of TBVA displayed good to excellent reliability among and within observers.

Purpose: Managing the distal tibiofibular (DTF) joint remains a challenge despite recent developments. Ankle arthroscopy is emerging as a diagnostic and therapeutic means. Our study aimed to compare preoperative imaging data and arthroscopic data, with the hypothesis that imaging alone is insufficient to evaluate acute laxity, and with arthroscopy as the reference examination.

Return to duty in military personnel after ACL reconstruction: STG versus ST4 double adjustable-loop device.

Orthop Traumatol Surg Res

December 2022

Department of Orthopaedic surgery and traumatology, Military teaching hospital Laveran, 34, boulevard Laveran, 13013 Marseille, France; Department of Orthopaedic surgery and traumatology, Hôpital Privé Toulon Hyères-Saint-Roch, 99, avenue Saint-Roch, 83000 Toulon, France.

Introduction: ACL ligamentoplasty with a quadruple semitindosus graft (ST4) and double adjustable endobutton (ST4E) allow the preservation of the gracilis, which should allow more rapid recovery of soldiers following ACL reconstruction. However, the literature does not report any superiority of this technique over others in terms of return to duty and sport.

Hypothesis: The ST4E system allows a return to military duty at least equivalent to the semitendinosus and gracilis graft (STG) with screw fixation.

Background: In early 2020, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic outbreak has posed the risk of critical care resources overload in every affected country. Collective interhospital transport of critically ill COVID-19 patients as a way to mitigate the localised pressure from overloaded intensive care units at a national or international level has not been reported yet. The aim of this study was to provide descriptive data about the first six collective aeromedical evacuation (MEDEVAC) of COVID-19 patients performed within Europe.

Objective: The ongoing coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic leads to the saturation of critical care facilities worldwide. Collective aeromedical evacuations (MEDEVACS) might help rebalance the demand and supply of health care. If interhospital transport of patients suffering from ARDS is relatively common, little is known about the specific challenges of collective medevac.

Endocarditis in the Mediterranean Basin.

New Microbes New Infect

November 2018

UMR VITROME, Aix-Marseille Université, IRD, Service de Santé des Armées, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Marseille, Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire Méditerranée-Infection, France.

Infective endocarditis is a severe disease with high mortality. Despite a global trend towards an increase in staphylococcal aetiologies, in older patients and a decrease in viridans streptococci, we have observed in recent studies great epidemiologic disparities between countries. In order to evaluate these differences among Mediterranean countries, we performed a PubMed search of infective endocarditis case series for each country.

Background: After one episode of exertional heat stroke (EHS), risk factors must be identified to determine the potential for subsequent episodes. One of these risk factors, core body temperature (T) kinetics during strenuous exercise, may be a surrogate marker suggestive of impaired thermoregulation. This study aimed to determine the kinetics of increases in T among military subjects who had a history of EHS.

The extent of thermal strain while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) during care activities for Ebola virus disease patients has not yet been characterized. From January to March 2015, 25 French healthcare workers (HCWs) in Conakry, Guinea, volunteered to be monitored while wearing PPE using an ingestible thermal sensor. The mean (standard deviation) working ambient temperature and relative humidity were 29.
