Joint Bone Spine

December 2023

Rheumatology Department, Sainte-Marguerite Hospital, AP-HM, 13009 Marseille, France; Aix-Marseille University, 13284 Marseille, France.

Introduction: Osteoid osteoma is a benign osteogenic tumour traditionally treated by surgical excision or percutaneous CT-guided procedures. We describe three cases of osteoid osteomas of which the locations were difficult to access, or for which the procedure was potentially unsafe, involving treatment with zoledronic acid infusions.

Case Description: We report here three male 28-to-31-year-old patients with no medical history who had osteoid osteomas located at the second cervical vertebra, the femoral head, and the third lumbar vertebra respectively.

Background: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation status is of a major clinical significance in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) management, as it guides therapeutic decision making to target patients for a better response to therapy. This implicates the introduction of EGFR mutation analysis as the standard of care for Moroccan NSCLC patients, which in itself entails the implementation of targeted methods for routine EGFR mutation analysis in our laboratories. In this study, we aimed to present 2 targeted methods for EGFR mutation identification and to determine the prevalence and spectrum of EGFR mutations in NSCLC Moroccan patients.

Introduction: In case of COVID-19 related scarcity of critical care resources, an early French triage algorithm categorized critically ill patients by probability of survival based on medical history and severity, with four priority levels for initiation or continuation of critical care: P1 -high priority, P2 -intermediate priority, P3 -not needed, P4 -not appropriate. This retrospective multi-center study aimed to assess its classification performance and its ability to help saving lives under capacity saturation.

Methods: ICU patients admitted for severe COVID-19 without triage in spring 2020 were retrospectively included from three hospitals.

Multiple trauma in pregnant women: injury assessment, fetal radiation exposure and mortality. A multicentre observational study.

Scand J Trauma Resusc Emerg Med

May 2023

Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, AP-HP.Nord, Beaujon Hospital, DMU PARABOL, 100 boulevard du General Leclerc, Clichy, 92110, France.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined fetal radiation exposure in pregnant women with trauma, focusing on how different injury assessments impact radiation doses to the fetus.
  • Conducted in multiple hospitals, the research assessed cumulative radiation doses in 54 pregnant women, finding that most underwent whole-body CT scans, which led to a median fetal dose of 38 mGy, below the 100 mGy safety threshold.
  • Results showed lower maternal mortality (6%) compared to fetal mortality (17%), indicating that a selective imaging strategy can be safe in skilled medical settings for specific cases of trauma.

Background: Since its outbreak in early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has diverted resources from non-urgent and elective procedures, leading to diagnosis and treatment delays, with an increased number of neoplasms at advanced stages worldwide. The aims of this study were to quantify the reduction in surgical activity for indeterminate thyroid nodules during the COVID-19 pandemic; and to evaluate whether delays in surgery led to an increased occurrence of aggressive tumours.

Methods: In this retrospective, international, cross-sectional study, centres were invited to participate in June 22, 2022; each centre joining the study was asked to provide data from medical records on all surgical thyroidectomies consecutively performed from Jan 1, 2019, to Dec 31, 2021.
