Background: Ultra-short-term heart rate variability (HRV) analysis (< 5 min) has been extensively growing in the field of exercise performance for autonomic assessment. However, the validation of ultra-short-term HRV was unclear in the recovery period of exercise. This study aimed to elucidate the agreement between ultra-short-term HRV (0-30 s, 0-1 min, 0-2 min, 0-3 min, 0-4 min) and standard short-term HRV (5 min) and to explore the optimal recording duration under rest and post-exercise conditions.

Background/purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the role and mechanisms of the formyl peptide receptor (FPR) and the toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) in hypoxia-induced chemoresistance of human ovarian cancer cells.
Materials And Methods: SKOV3 cells were exposed to hypoxia for 24 hours, the supernatant was collected to stimulate normoxia-cultured SKOV3, and the inhibition rate of cell growth was detected with CCK8 test. The agonist of TLR9 CpG ODN and the agonist of FPR fMLF were applied to investigate the chemosensitivity of SKOV3 cells to cisplatin.

Background: Iron is a kind of essential trace mineral in the human body, while the studies on its physiological requirement are very limited recently, especially in China. And most studies were performed with the radioisotope tracer technique, which was harmful to health. This study aimed to first get the value of iron physiological requirements in Chinese adults assessed by the stable isotope labeling technique.

Previous work suggests that a local extravascular angiotensin system plays an important role in the development of pulmonary fibrosis through stimulation of alveolar epithelial cell (AEC) apoptosis and collagen deposition. To demonstrate a causative role for the local tissue angiotensin (ANG) system in lung fibrosis, we hypothesize that overexpression of the angiotensinogen (AGT) gene or pharmacologic elevation of lung tissue ANG II levels might cause apoptosis of AECs and lung fibrosis. ANGII levels were elevated in rat or mouse lung tissue by intratracheal instillation of either purified ANGII or an adenovirus expressing AGT, or by ubiquitous overexpression of AGT in transgenic mice.

Calcium overload is a vital mechanism of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, which is a hot therapeutic target in cardiovascular research. It has been well recognized that the dysfunction of calcium relevant proteins, including L-type voltage- dependent calcium channel (L-VDCC), sarco/endoplasmic reticulum ATPase 2a (SERCA2a)/phospholamban (PLB), RyR2, Na/Ca exchanger, Na/H exchanger, etc. contributes to calcium overload in cardiomyocytes during ischemia-reperfusion injury, in which the diastolic calcium concentration is increased and the amplitude of calcium transients is decreased.

In order to investigate the promoting effect of low-intensity treadmill exercise on rat dorsal wound healing and the mechanism, 20 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups: exercise group (Ex) and non-exercise group (non-ex). The rats in Ex group were given treadmill exercise for one month, and those in non-ex group raised on the same conditions without treadmill exercise. Both groups received dorsal wound operation with free access to food and water.

Pyogenic hepatic abscesses are rare, and fatal if untreated. Recent progresses in diagnostic and interventional radiology facilitated their management. However, abscesses located in the caudate lobe are still a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge, especially to general internists, who tend to overtreatment.

Background: Calcipotriol/betamethasone dipropionate combination in a non-alcoholic, lipophilic gel formulation (two-compound gel) has previously been demonstrated as a safe and effective treatment for scalp psoriasis in Caucasian, Hispanic/Latino, and Black/African American populations. The purpose of this randomized, investigator-blinded, active-controlled, 4-week study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the two-compound gel in Chinese subjects with scalp psoriasis.
Method: Subjects were randomized in a 1 : 1 ratio to four weeks of treatment with either the two-compound gel once daily or calcipotriol scalp solution twice daily.

Immunosuppression is the main source of ineffective treatment on tumor, and the study aimed to investigate the effect of artesunate on tumor immunosuppression. Supernatants of re-cultivated murine colorectal cancer cell Colon26 and human colorectal cancer cell RKO after pre-treatment with or without artesunate were enrolled, and their effects on five immune parameters were assessed, including killing activity of natural killer (NK) and lymphocyte proliferation, as measured by MTT, and expressions of interleukin 2 receptor (IL-2R)α, CD3ε(+)ζ(+) and CD3ε(-)ζ(+) on lymphocytes, as analyzed by flow cytometry. Six immunosuppressive factors were measured by ELISA, including transforming growth factor (TGF) β1, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2).

Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) HOX transcript antisense RNA (HOTAIR), which could induce genome-wide retargeting of polycomb-repressive complex 2, trimethylates histone H3 lysine-27 (H3K27me3) and deregulation of multiple downstream genes, is involved in development and progression of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). We hypothesized that the functional single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in HOTAIR may affect HOTAIR expression and/or its function and, thus, ESCC risk. Therefore, we examined the association between three haplotype-tagging SNPs (htSNP) across the whole HOTAIR locus and ESCC risk as well as the functional relevance of an ESCC susceptibility SNP rs920778.

The occurrence of aortic regurgitation (AR) attributable to Behçet's disease is rare, but it brings extraordinary complexity to surgical intervention due to the high risk of postoperative morbidity as the result of valve dehiscence or pseudoaneurysms caused by fragile aortic structures and inflamed tissue. The high rate of prosthetic valve detachment after aortic valve replacement is one of the most serious consequences of aortic regurgitation in Behçet's disease, which results in severe aortic annular destruction, presenting a big challenge to cardiac surgeons. Under this condition, a conventional surgical technique is necessary to be modified for improving postoperative prognosis of patients.
