Environmental, Occupational and Ageing "Integrative Physiology" Laboratory, Haute Ecole Bruxelles-Brabant (HE2B), Brussels, Belgium.

evaluation of human brain performance and arousal remains challenging during operational circumstances, hence the need for a rapid, reliable and reproducible tool. Here we hypothesized that the Critical flicker fusion frequency (CFFF) reflecting/requiring visual integration, visuo-motor skills and decision-taking process might be a powerful, fast and simple tool in modified gravity environments. Therefore 11 male healthy volunteers were assessed for higher cognitive functions with CFFF during parabolic flights.

Variability in circulating gas emboli after a same scuba diving exposure.

Eur J Appl Physiol

June 2018

Environmental and Occupational (Integrative) Physiology Laboratory, Haute Ecole Bruxelles-Brabant (HE2B), Brussels, Belgium.

Purpose: A reduction in ambient pressure or decompression from scuba diving can result in ultrasound-detectable venous gas emboli (VGE). These environmental exposures carry a risk of decompression sickness (DCS) which is mitigated by adherence to decompression schedules; however, bubbles are routinely observed for dives well within these limits and significant inter-personal variability in DCS risk exists. Here, we assess the variability and evolution of VGE for 2 h post-dive using echocardiography, following a standardized pool dive in calm warm conditions.

Université Catholique de Louvain, Institut de recherche clinique (IREC/CARS) Avenue Hippocrate, 55 bte B1.55.02, Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, 1200 Brussels, Belgium.

Unlabelled: Well-adapted motor actions require intact and well-integrated information from all of the sensory systems, specifically the visual, vestibular, and somatosensory systems, including proprioception. Proprioception is involved in the sensorimotor control by providing the central nervous system with an updated body schema of the biomechanical and spatial properties of the body parts. With regard to the cervical spine, proprioceptive information from joint and muscle mechanoreceptors is integrated with vestibular and visual feedback to control head position, head orientation, and whole body posture.

Since non-provocative dive profiles are no guarantor of protection against decompression sickness, novel means including pre-dive "preconditioning" interventions, are proposed for its prevention. This study investigated and compared the effect of pre-dive oxygenation, pre-dive whole body vibration or a combination of both on post-dive bubble formation. Six healthy volunteers performed 6 no-decompression dives each, to a depth of 33 mfw for 20 min (3 control dives without preconditioning and 1 of each preconditioning protocol) with a minimum interval of 1 week between each dive.

Although many factors contributing to inert gas narcosis onset and severity have been put forward, the available evidence is not particularly strong. Using objective criteria, we have assessed brain impairment associated with narcosis under various environmental diving conditions. 40 volunteers performed a no-decompression dive (33 m for 20 min) either in a dry chamber, a pool or open sea.

Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Antwerp, AZ MONICA Antwerp, Harmoniestraat 68, 2018 Antwerp, Belgium. Electronic address:

Introduction: Throughout the history of computing, shortening the gap between the physical and digital world behind the screen has always been strived for. Recent advances in three-dimensional (3D) virtual surgery programs have reduced this gap significantly. Although 3D assisted surgery is now widely available for orthognathic surgery, one might still argue whether a 3D virtual planning approach is a better alternative to a conventional two-dimensional (2D) planning technique.

European Homograft Bank, c/o Military Hospital Queen Astrid, Rue Bruynstraat, 1120, Brussels, Belgium,

The use of arterial homograft is indicated especially in case of prosthetic graft infections after bypass surgery. We report the case of a patient who experienced the loss of a cryopreserved femoral artery caused by an acute rejection. This homograft had to be explanted 1 month after implantation because of an acute aneurysmal deterioration.

Column chromatographic characterization of complex formation of pro-IGF-II isoforms with acid labile subunit and IGF-binding proteins associated with non-islet cell tumour induced hypoglycaemia.

Growth Horm IGF Res

Dept. Clinical Chemistry and Hematology, Laboratory of Endocrinology, University Medical Center Utrecht, Utrecht, The Netherlands; Dept. Medical Genetics, Section Metabolic Diseases, University Medical Center Utrecht, Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Objective And Design: Non-islet cell tumour induced hypoglycaemia (NICTH) is a paraneoplastic phenomenon that is associated with the formation of several isoforms of pro-insulin like growth factor 2 (pro-IGF-II), or so called "big" IGF-II. Disturbance of ternary complex formation by big IGF-II is assumed to be a crucial early event in the pathogenic cascade of hypoglycaemia. By size-exclusion chromatography, we investigated complex formation by adding different naturally occurring isoforms of pro-IGF-II to pooled normal adult serum.

Functional comparison between critical flicker fusion frequency and simple cognitive tests in subjects breathing air or oxygen in normobaria.

Diving Hyperb Med

September 2013

Centre for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Military Hospital "Queen Astrid", Brussels, Belgium, Haute Ecole Paul Henri Spaak, Environmental, Occupational and Ageing Physiology Laboratory, Brussels, Belgium, DAN Europe Research Division.

Introduction: Measurement of inert gas narcosis and its degree is difficult during operational circumstances, hence the need for a reliable, reproducible and adaptable tool. Although being an indirect measure of brain function, if reliable, critical flicker fusion frequency (CFFF) could address this need and be used for longitudinal studies on cortical arousal in humans.

Methods: To test the reliability of this method, the comparison between CFFF and three tests (Math-Processing Task, Trail-Making Task, and Perceptual Vigilance Task) from the Psychology Experiment Building Language battery (PEBL) were used to evaluate the effect of 10 minutes of 100% normobaric oxygen breathing on mental performance in 20 healthy male volunteers.

Long term effects of recreational SCUBA diving on higher cognitive function.

Scand J Med Sci Sports

December 2014

DAN Europe Research Division, Military Hospital Queen Astrid, Brussels, Belgium; Center for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Military Hospital Queen Astrid, Brussels, Belgium; Environmental and Occupational Physiology Department, Haute Ecole Paul Henri Spaak, Brussels, Belgium.

We investigated long-term effects of SCUBA diving on cognitive function using a battery of neuropsychometric tests: the Simple Reaction Time (REA), Symbol Digit Substitution (SDS), Digit Span Backwards (DSB), and Hand-Eye Coordination tests (EYE). A group (n = 44) of experienced SCUBA divers with no history of decompression sickness was compared to non-diving control subjects (n = 37), as well as to professional boxers (n = 24), who are considered at higher risk of long term neurological damage. The REA was significantly shorter in SCUBA divers compared to the control subjects, and also more stable over the time course of the test.
