More and more attention is nowadays given to the possible translational application of a great number of biochemical and biological findings with the involved molecules. This is also the case of cholesterol oxidation products, redox molecules over the last years deeply investigated for their implication in human pathophysiology. Oxysterols of non-enzymatic origin, the excessive increase of which in biological fluids and tissues is of toxicological relevance for their marked pro-oxidant and pro-inflammatory properties, are increasingly applied in clinical biochemistry as molecular markers in the diagnosis and monitoring of several human and veterinary diseases.

Within this continuum of presentations, the presence of mild cognitive or behavioral symptoms in patients with ALS has been consistently reported, although it is unclear whether this is to be considered a distinct phenotype or rather a natural evolution of ALS. Trials on intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) use in cardiogenic shock related to acute myocardial infarction have shown disappointing results. The role of IABP in cardiogenic shock treatment remains unclear, and new (potentially more potent) mechanical circulatory supports with arguably larger device profile are emerging. A reappraisal of the physiological premises of intra-aortic counterpulsation may underpin the rationale to maintain IABP as a valuable therapeutic option for patients with acute decompensated heart failure and tissue hypoperfusion.

This study compares the effects on motor symptoms between conventional deep brain stimulation (cDBS) and closed-loop adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS) in patients with Parkinson's Disease. The aDBS stimulation is controlled by the power in the beta band (12-35 Hz) of local field potentials recorded directly by subthalamic nucleus electrodes. Background Aortic valve calcification (AVC) is a key feature of aortic stenosis, and patients with aortic stenosis often have coronary -artery disease. Classification of triple-negative breast cancers through a Boolean network model of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition.

Predicting the metastasis risk in patients with a primary breast cancer tumor is of fundamental importance to decide the best therapeutic strategy in the framework of personalized medicine. Here, we present ARIADNE, a general algorithmic strategy to assess the risk of metastasis from transcriptomic data of patients with triple-negative breast cancer, a subtype of breast cancer with poorer prognosis with respect to the other subtypes. ARIADNE identifies hybrid epithelial/mesenchymal phenotypes by mapping gene expression data into the states of a Boolean network model of the epithelial-mesenchymal pathway.

Cholangiocarcinomas (CCAs) are a heterogeneous group of tumors that arise from the biliary tract. Jaundice is a common clinical presentation; however, the prognostic impact of this symptom is poorly understood, and current management recommendations lack solid evidence. Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are associated with invasive malignancies, including almost 100% of cervical cancers (CECs), and 35-70% of oropharyngeal cancers (OPCs). HPV infection leads to clinical implications in related tumors by determining better prognosis and predicting treatment response, especially in OPC. Currently, specific and minimally invasive tests allow for detecting HPV-related cancer at an early phase, informing more appropriately therapeutical decisions, and allowing for timely disease monitoring.

Objective: To update the consensus recommendations for reporting of quantitative optical coherence tomography (OCT) study results, thus revising the previously published Advised Protocol for OCT Study Terminology and Elements (APOSTEL) recommendations.

Methods: To identify studies reporting quantitative OCT results, we performed a PubMed search for the terms "quantitative" and "optical coherence tomography" from 2015 to 2017. Corresponding authors of the identified publications were invited to provide feedback on the initial APOSTEL recommendations via online surveys following the principle of a modified Delphi method.

The efficacy and safety of caplacizumab in individuals with acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (aTTP) have been established in the phase 2 TITAN and phase 3 HERCULES trials.
