Background: The incidence of occult inguinal or Spigelian hernias found in other laparoscopies is seldom studied and their development to symptomatic hernias is unknown.
Materials And Methods: The orifices of all inguinal and Spigelian hernias at linea semilunaris were carefully recorded prospectively in the laparoscopic surgery during the years 2003-2004 (104 cholecystectomies, 55 fundoplications, 36 diagnostic, and 6 miscellaneous). The patients were followed up over 15 years to find out how often the detected occult hernias at index laparoscopy become later symptomatic and were repaired.

Introduction: There are only few studies on the effects of pelvic or hip fractures on subsequent delivery outcomes. The aim for this study is to evaluate in a nationwide sample whether the rate of elective CS and emergency CS would decrease during the time after maternal hip and pelvic fracture.
Material And Methods: In this nationwide registry-based study, data on all women aged 15-49 years with pelvic or hip fractures leading to hospitalization were retrieved from the Care Register for Health Care for the years 1998-2018.

Importance: Universal ultrasonographic screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) has gained increasing popularity despite the lack of benefit in terms of reducing the rates of late-detected cases (age ≥12 weeks) in randomized clinical trials.
Objective: To report the reported incidence of DDH in the English scientific literature and compare rates of late-detected cases in settings with different DDH screening strategies.
Data Sources: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched on November 25 and 27, 2021.

Background: The two most common abdominal infections in emergency departments (ED) are acute appendicitis (AA) and sigmoid diverticulitis (AD). The frequency of ED visits for diverticulitis has increased strongly in many countries during recent decades. The aim of this study was to analyze the nationwide changes in AD rate requiring hospital admission compared to AA during a 10-year study period.

Background: The incidences of spine fractures and fusion surgeries have increased. A few studies have reported an increased rate of caesarean sections (CS) in women who have undergone spine surgery but have not reported on the health of neonates.
Objective: We report the incidence of spine fractures, spine fracture surgeries and fusion surgery for other reasons and the effect of these injuries and procedures on later pregnancy outcomes in Finland.

The purpose of this study is to assess whether pacifier use is associated with breastfeeding success in term and preterm newborns and whether it influences hospitalization time in preterm newborns. Four databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. The risk of bias and evidence quality, according to the GRADE methodology, were analyzed.

Introduction: The effect of lockdown on the incidence of fractures and severe injuries has been widely studied, whereas studies regarding muscle, tendon, and ligament injuries have not received as much attention. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of the lockdown and later regional regulations due to the COVID pandemic on the incidence of muscle, tendon, and ligament injuries and related surgical procedures.
Materials And Methods: This study focuses on the working-age population in the catchment areas of three major Finnish hospitals.

Background: Brain atrophy appears during the progression of multiple sclerosis (MS) and is associated with the disability caused by the disease.
Methods: We investigated global and regional grey matter (GM) and white matter (WM) volumes, WM lesion load, and corpus callosum index (CCI), in benign relapsing-remitting MS (BRRMS, n = 35) with and without any treatment and compared those to aggressive relapsing-remitting MS (ARRMS, n = 46). Structures were analyzed by using an automated MRI quantification tool (cNeuro®).

Background: The phase I KAT301 trial investigated the use of intramyocardial adenoviral vascular endothelial growth factor-D (AdVEGF-D) gene therapy (GT) to alleviate symptoms in refractory angina (RA) patients. In KAT301, 30 patients with RA were randomized to AdVEGF-D or the control group in 4:1 ratio. The treatment was found to be feasible, increasing myocardial perfusion and reducing angina symptoms at 1-year follow-up.

Emergency department (ED) overcrowding is a global issue setting challenges to all care providers. Elderly patients are frequent visitors of the ED and their risk stratification is demanding due to insufficient assessment methods. A prospective cohort study was conducted to determine the risk-predicting value of a prognostic biomarker, soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR), in the ED, concentrating on elderly patients.

Background: Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is observed in most newborns, and 5-15% of neonates require phototherapy. Phototherapy is effective but often prolongs hospitalization and has both short-term and potential long-term harms. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the role of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) combined with phototherapy in neonatal hyperbilirubinemia.

Objectives: We analyzed the incidence of obese and severely obese parturients and the impact of maternal obesity on mode of delivery, perinatal and neonatal mortality, and neonatal health.
Study Design: We included all singleton births from the medical birth register of Finland from 2004 to 2018 (n = 792 437). Maternal body mass index (BMI) was categorized into three classes: non-obese (BMI < 30 kg/m), obese (BMI 30 - 39.
