Background: Neck pain is a common condition that is often difficult to diagnose. Previous literature has investigated diagnostic accuracy of examination measures, but the strength and clinical applicability are limited. This overview of systematic reviews aimed to investigate clinical features for diagnosing neck pain and its associated disorders.

Larvae of (the greater wax moth) are being increasingly used as a model to study microbial pathogenesis. In this model, bacterial virulence is typically measured by determining the 50% lethal dose (LD) of a bacterial strain or mutant. The use of to study pathogenesis, however, is challenging because of the extreme sensitivity of larvae to this bacterium.

Background: Investigate retinal fluid changes via a novel deep-learning algorithm in real-world patients receiving faricimab for the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD).
Methods: Multicenter, retrospective chart review and optical coherence tomography (OCT) image upload from participating sites was conducted on patients treated with faricimab for nAMD from February 2022 to January 2024. The Notal OCT Analyzer (NOA) algorithm provided intraretinal, subretinal and total retinal fluid for each scan.

Epiglottitis is an inflammatory condition involving the epiglottis and surrounding tissues. While it can develop at any age, it was traditionally more common in children, largely due to infections with type B (Hib). Since the introduction of the Hib vaccine, the incidence in children has significantly decreased, while cases in adults have become more prevalent.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFInguinal hernias are the most prevalent type of abdominal wall hernia. While many cases are uncomplicated, some variant forms can pose a heightened risk of severe complications. We report the case of a 46-year-old male who arrived at the emergency department with a two-day history of diffuse abdominal pain, with an otherwise negative review of systems, an unremarkable medical and surgical history, and normal laboratory results.

Introduction: In the biological sciences, many areas of uncertainty exist regarding the factors that contribute to success within the faculty job market. Earlier work from our group reported that beyond certain thresholds, academic and career metrics like the number of publications, fellowships or career transition awards, and years of experience did not separate applicants who received job offers from those who did not. Questions still exist regarding how academic and professional achievements influence job offers and if candidate demographics differentially influence outcomes.

Purpose: To investigate the association of SOX2 polymorphisms with oral leukoplakia with dysplasia (OLD) and compare it with the immunohistochemical expression of SOX-2.
Methods: The samples comprised 64 patients with oral leukoplakia and 20 with normal oral mucosa who were subjected to SOX2 polymorphism rs77677339 genotyping by real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry for SOX-2 (basal epithelium expression, suprabasal and total; nuclear area and intensity). Statistical tests included the Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests.

Purpose: Define the impact of the implementation of evidence-based music medicine (MM) on pain management outcomes after abdominal and pelvic surgery when combined with usual care.
Design: This quality improvement project implemented MM in a hospital postanesthesia care unit using a pretest-posttest design. The Roy Adaptation Model and Kotter's Change theory guided all project phases.

Double common bile duct (DCBD) is a rare congenital anomaly of the biliary system, characterized by the presence of two common bile ducts. The condition can be classified into five distinct types. Type Va DCBD is one of the rare congenital variations where both bile ducts open separately into the duodenum: one opens normally at the major duodenal papilla, and the second opens independently into the duodenum at a different site, usually proximal to the major duodenal papilla.

An inguinal hernia is a common surgical condition where abdominal contents protrude through a weakened area of the abdominal wall. While most are straightforward, rare variants can lead to significant complications. Named after the surgeon who successfully removed a vermiform appendix from a hernia sac, Amyand's hernia is a rare finding.

A rare complication of laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a biloma, which usually develops as a result of the dissection of non-visible, abnormal ducts of Luschka. This anatomical variation in the bile ducts was initially overlooked within the biliary tree. While it generally holds minimal clinical significance, it may occasionally lead to bile leakage following cholecystectomy.

Insufficient physical activity is associated with increased relative risk of cardiometabolic disease and is an independent risk factor for mortality. Experimentally reducing physical activity rapidly induces insulin resistance, impairs glucose handling, and drives metabolic inflexibility. These adaptations manifest during the early stages of physical inactivity, even when energy balance is maintained, suggesting that inactivity-mediated metabolic reprogramming is an early event that precedes changes in body composition.

Respiration is governed by a central rhythm and pattern generator, which has the pre-Bötzinger complex as the inspiratory oscillator initiating the coordinated activity of several respiratory muscles, including the diaphragm, intercostals, and upper airway muscles. The diaphragm is the main inspiratory pump muscle driving inflow, whereas dilator upper airway muscles, such as tongue muscles, reduce airway resistance during inspiration. Breathing exhibits a marked state-dependent pattern attributed to changes in neuromodulatory tone in respiratory-related brain regions, including decreases in noradrenaline and serotonin and increases in acetylcholine levels during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

Sacral reconstruction post tumor resection has historically been executed with the placement of hardware or free tissue transfer. Reconstruction using a vascularized bone graft is an alternative that avoids the complications associated with hardware placement or free tissue transfer. This article describes the first documented case of spinoplastic reconstruction using an iliac crest vascularized bone graft (IC-VBG) after the resection of a sacral ependymoma.

Environmental forces impacting public health include exposure to toxic substances, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), diet, and exercise. Here, we examine the first two of these forces in some detail since they may be amenable to correction through cultural, medical, and practitioner intervention. At the same time, changing people's dietary and exercise routines are likely more resistant to these interventions and are referred to only incidentally in this review.
