Background Stiffer aortas are associated with a faster rate of aortic root (AoR) dilation and higher risk of aortic dissection in patients with Marfan syndrome. We have previously shown that mild aerobic exercise reduces aortic stiffness and rate of AoR dilation in a Marfan mouse model. In this study, we investigated if these results could be translated to pediatric patients with Marfan syndrome.

In nitrogenase biosynthesis, the iron-molybdenum cofactor (FeMo-co) is externally assembled at scaffold proteins and delivered to the NifDK nitrogenase component by the NafY metallochaperone. Here we have used nuclear magnetic resonance, molecular dynamics, and functional analysis to elucidate the environment and coordination of FeMo-co in NafY. H stands as the key FeMo-co ligand.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA recent focus in community ecology has been on how within-species variability shapes interspecific niche partitioning. Primate color vision offers a rich system in which to explore this issue. Most neotropical primates exhibit intraspecific variation in color vision due to allelic variation at the middle-to-long-wavelength opsin gene on the X chromosome.

A number of childhood cancer survivors develop adverse, late onset side effects of earlier cancer treatments, known as the late effects of cancer therapy. As the number of survivors continues to increase, this growing population is at increased risk for a number of health-related problems. In the present study, we have examined the effect of aspirin on the late effects of chemotherapy by treating juvenile mice with doxorubicin (DOX).

Background The function of medin, one of the most common human amyloid proteins that accumulates in the vasculature with aging, remains unknown. We aim to probe medin's role in cerebrovascular disease by comparing cerebral arterial medin content between cognitively normal and vascular dementia (VaD) patients and studying its effects on endothelial cell (EC) immune activation and neuroinflammation. We also tested whether monosialoganglioside-containing nanoliposomes could reverse medin's adverse effects.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOviparous animals have evolved multiple defenses to prevent microbes from penetrating their eggs and causing embryo mortality. In birds, egg constituents such as lysozyme and antibodies defend against microbial infestation, but eggshell pigments might also impact survival of bacteria. If so, microbes could exert an important selective pressure on the evolution of eggshell coloration.
