An 86-year-old man with a 3 months history of weight loss and bloody diarrhea was admitted to our hospital. Endoscopic examination revealed transverse colon cancer, along with numerous polypoid lesions in the stomach, duodenum, colon, and rectum. These findings led to a diagnosis of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome(CCS).

Aim: Self-stigma is a major factor preventing the recovery of individuals with schizophrenia. Psychosocial interventions can reduce self-stigma, and mental health nurses may play a crucial role in leading them, but little is known about the modifiable factors that should be targeted. We aimed to investigate the association between self-stigma and self-compassion in patients with schizophrenia from admission to the first follow-up after discharge.

The therapeutic effects of oral anticoagulant drugs for nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) suggest that the three factor Xa (FXa) inhibitors may have distinct safety profiles, though this is not yet fully conclusive. This study investigated the current dosing of rivaroxaban, apixaban, and edoxaban by monitoring drug plasma concentration (PC) and coagulation activity from the viewpoint of the safety. This multicenter clinical study monitored the drug PC and two coagulation biomarkers (fibrinogen and fibrin monomer complex [FMC]) at peak and trough timing in 268 outpatients taking rivaroxaban (n = 72), apixaban (n = 71), and edoxaban (n = 125) for NVAF.

A six-year-old boy presented with short stature and gingival fibromatosis (GF). Dysmorphic features included slant optic fissures, a high-arched palate, thick earlobes, and an edematous face. Laboratory tests showed low levels of serum insulin-like growth factor-1 and serum free thyroxine but normal serum thyrotropin levels.

Background: Previous studies have indicated that red dichromatic imaging (RDI) improved the visibility of gastrointestinal bleeding.
Aims: To investigate the recognition of bleeding points during endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) under RDI compared with that under white light imaging (WLI).
Methods: Consecutive patients scheduled to undergo esophageal or gastric ESD at a single center were enrolled.

Dotinurad has been approved in Japan as a selective urate reabsorption inhibitor for the treatment of gout and hyperuricemia. The relationship between uric acid crystallization and the use of uricosuric drugs is widely acknowledged; however, the relationship between changes in urinary uric acid concentration and urine pH or volume has not been sufficiently analyzed. Therefore, we investigated the changes in urinary uric acid concentration following dotinurad administration as well as the relationship between urine pH or volume and urinary uric acid concentration.

This study aimed to classify nurses with similar work values into subgroups by examining their intrinsic, extrinsic, social, and prestige work values. Additionally, we clarified the characteristics of the obtained subgroups using personal attributes, work engagement, and life satisfaction. Using a cross-sectional observational study design, we randomly sampled 52 hospitals in the Tohoku region of Japan and conducted a self-administered questionnaire survey with 2600 nurses.

Background: Pituitary apoplexy (PA) is characterized by sudden headache, vomiting, visual dysfunction, anterior lobe dysfunction, and endocrine disorder due to bleeding or infarction from a pituitary adenoma. PA occurs in approximately 0.6-10% of pituitary adenomas, more commonly in men aged 50-60 years, and more frequently in nonfunctioning and prolactin-producing pituitary adenomas.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between bereaved individuals' coping patterns, mental health, and time post-loss. A questionnaire using the Coping with Bereavement Scale (CBS) and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K6) was completed by 173 family members of individuals who died from cancer between August 2013 and March 2016. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed a three-factor solution for the CBS comprised of "life orientation," "avoidance," and "retaining ties" with the deceased.

The role of dementia specialists is to differentiate patients with iNPH from patients with other dementia diseases and to determine if other dementia diseases are comorbid with iNPH. We conducted a nationwide hospital-based questionnaire survey on iNPH in medical centers for dementia (MCDs).

Despite progress in understanding of the genetic basis of gout, the precise factors affecting differences in gout susceptibility among different gout subtypes remain unclear. Using clinically diagnosed gout patients, we conducted a genome-wide meta-analysis of two distinct gout subtypes: the renal overload type and the renal underexcretion type. We provide genetic evidence at a genome-wide level of significance that supports a positive association between ABCG2 dysfunction and acquisition of the renal overload type.

Background And Aim: Comprehensive reports on the risk factors for bleeding and early death after percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) are limited. In this multicenter study, we retrospectively investigated the risk factors for bleeding and early death after PEG.
Methods: Patients (n = 1234) who underwent PEG between 2015 and 2020 at Osaka Medical and Pharmaceutical University and its affiliated hospitals (11 institutions in total) were evaluated for postoperative bleeding and early death (within 60 days) after PEG according to patient characteristics, construction method, medical history, medications, preoperative hematological findings, and perioperative adverse events.

Aim: Clinical evaluations are generally used to verify the effectiveness of detoxification treatments for alcohol dependence, but new objective biomarkers are essential for accurate diagnosis. We aim to assess the accuracy of carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (%CDT) in a cohort of Japanese patients admitted to a psychiatric hospital specializing in alcohol dependence. In addition, we investigated the kinetics of %CDT during alcohol moderation or cessation.

Objectives: Genome-wide meta-analyses of clinically defined gout were performed to identify subtype-specific susceptibility loci. Evaluation using selection pressure analysis with these loci was also conducted to investigate genetic risks characteristic of the Japanese population over the last 2000-3000 years.
Methods: Two genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of 3053 clinically defined gout cases and 4554 controls from Japanese males were performed using the Japonica Array and Illumina Array platforms.

Purpose: This study compared the feasibility and safety of endoscopic placement of self-expandable metallic stents (SEMSs) as a bridge to surgery (BTS) between patients with obstructive colorectal cancer (CRC) classified as ColoRectal Obstruction Scoring System (CROSS) 0 and those with CROSS 1 or 2.
Methods: We conducted a post hoc analysis of two prospective, observational, single-arm multicenter clinical trials and performed a pooled analysis of the data. In total, 336 consecutive patients with malignant colorectal obstruction underwent SEMS placement.

Objective: The first ever genome-wide association study (GWAS) of clinically defined gout cases and asymptomatic hyperuricaemia (AHUA) controls was performed to identify novel gout loci that aggravate AHUA into gout.
Methods: We carried out a GWAS of 945 clinically defined gout cases and 1003 AHUA controls followed by 2 replication studies. In total, 2860 gout cases and 3149 AHUA controls (all Japanese men) were analysed.

Background: Obstacle crossing requires sufficient toe clearance for trip and fall prevention for which postural stability is a prerequisite. It is thought that the upper visual field plays an important role in the maintenance of postural stability, but its influence and age-dependence have not been investigated yet.
Research Question: What is the role of the visual fields in maintaining postural stability during crossing an obstacle in young and older adults?.
