CONTExT-RA: a cross-sectional study evaluating disease activity, quality of life and the socio-demographic profile of Irish patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Objectives: CONTExT-RA is a cross-sectional, non-interventional multicentre study which enrolled patients diagnosed with RA and receiving DMARD treatment in a secondary care setting. The study evaluated disease control and associated disease burden amongst this Irish population.

Methods: Patients with RA attending six Irish rheumatology centres were invited to participate.

Purpose: Metastatic breast cancer [MBC] is the leading cause of cancer death in women globally with no cure. Women diagnosed with MBC endure a catastrophic upheaval to multiple aspects of their life and a radically transformed future landscape. Evidence suggests that the provision of care for women living with metastatic breast cancer is inadequate, socially isolating and stigmatising.

Objectives: Despite efforts to mitigate challenges to advance underrepresented groups (URG) groups' representation in medical education, diversity remains underwhelming. In response to this several mentoring programs to increase diversification within medical education have been implemented. However, the impact of these programs on URG representation across disciplines is unknown.

Background: Since its outbreak in early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has diverted resources from non-urgent and elective procedures, leading to diagnosis and treatment delays, with an increased number of neoplasms at advanced stages worldwide. The aims of this study were to quantify the reduction in surgical activity for indeterminate thyroid nodules during the COVID-19 pandemic; and to evaluate whether delays in surgery led to an increased occurrence of aggressive tumours.

Methods: In this retrospective, international, cross-sectional study, centres were invited to participate in June 22, 2022; each centre joining the study was asked to provide data from medical records on all surgical thyroidectomies consecutively performed from Jan 1, 2019, to Dec 31, 2021.

The Impact of a National Cyberattack Affecting Clinical Trials: The Cancer Trials Ireland Experience.

Purpose: Cyberattacks are increasing in health care and cause immediate disruption to patient care, have a lasting impact, and compromise scientific integrity of affected clinical trials. On the May 14, 2021, the Irish health service was the victim of a nationwide ransomware attack. Patient care was disrupted across 4,000 locations, including 18 cancer clinical trials units associated with Cancer Trials Ireland (CTI).

Trauma Assessment Clinic: A virtual fracture clinic model that delivers on its PROMise!

Background: The use of virtual fracture clinics across the United Kingdom and Ireland is growing and have been shown in an increasing number of studies to be safe, cost-effective and associated with good functional outcomes and patient satisfaction rates for certain fracture types. Initially pioneered at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, many centres have adopted similar templates, or variations of, and the overall aim of this study was to assess functional outcomes and injury recovery satisfaction rates of patients discharged directly following review in a specific virtual fracture clinic model known as the Trauma Assessment Clinic (TAC).

Methods: A prospective observational study was carried out of paediatric (aged <17 years) and adult (aged >17 years) patients, with the five most commonly observed fracture types, who were discharged directly following review at the TAC in a single hospital centre over a 12 month period from January to December 2018.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae Prosthetic Joint Infection in an Immunocompromised Patient: A Case Report.

Case: We report the case of an immunosuppressed 65-year-old man with prosthetic joint infection (PJI) 23 years postoperatively because of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, through hematogenous seeding of cutaneous erysipeloid. Immunotherapy was discontinued, washout was performed, and antimicrobial therapy was guided by laboratory sensitivities. The patient was discharged on suppressive oral ciprofloxacin monotherapy.
