Clinical effectiveness and safety of vildagliptin in >19 000 patients with type 2 diabetes: the GUARD study.

The present GUARD study was a prospective, non-interventional study evaluating the clinical effectiveness, safety and tolerability of vildagliptin with or without metformin in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) studied in routine clinical practice. Patients were enrolled from countries across four geographical regions. The primary endpoint was change in glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) concentration from baseline after 24 weeks of treatment with vildagliptin with or without metformin.

A nationwide non-interventional epidemiological data registry on myelodysplastic syndromes in Lebanon.

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a heterogeneous group of clonal hematopoietic disorders characterized by peripheral blood cytopenias, blood cells dysplasia, and increased risk for progression to acute leukemia.Physicians should be vigilant in diagnosing MDS and should be aware of the contemporary therapies that are always in progress. Most of the data on MDS epidemiology and management comes from developed countries.

The European Academy laparoscopic "Suturing Training and Testing'' (SUTT) significantly improves surgeons' performance.

Unlabelled: The efficiency of suturing training and testing (SUTT) model by laparoscopy was evaluated, measuring the suturingskill acquisition of trainee gynecologists at the beginning and at the end of a teaching course. During a workshop organized by the European Academy of Gynecological Surgery (EAGS), 25 participants with three different experience levels in laparoscopy (minor, intermediate and major) performed the 4 exercises of the SUTT model (Ex 1: both hands stitching and continuous suturing, Ex 2: right hand stitching and intracorporeal knotting, Ex 3: left hand stitching and intracorporeal knotting, Ex 4: dominant hand stitching, tissue approximation and intracorporeal knotting). The time needed to perform the exercises is recorded for each trainee and group and statistical analysis used to note the differences.

Primary results of ROSE/TRIO-12, a randomized placebo-controlled phase III trial evaluating the addition of ramucirumab to first-line docetaxel chemotherapy in metastatic breast cancer.

Purpose: Currently, antiangiogenic strategies in metastatic breast cancer have demonstrated modest improvements in progression-free survival (PFS) but not improved quality or duration of survival, warranting evaluation of new agents in a placebo-controlled setting. Ramucirumab is a human immunoglobulin G1 antibody that binds vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 and blocks ligand-stimulated activation. The ROSE/TRIO-012 trial evaluated ramucirumab with docetaxel in unresectable, locally recurrent, or metastatic breast cancer.

Preventing staple-line leak in sleeve gastrectomy: reinforcement with bovine pericardium vs. oversewing.

One of the most serious, potentially life-threatening complications of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is staple-line leakage. Oversewing the LSG staple line vs buttressing it with bovine pericardial strips (BPS) to reduce perioperative bleeding and postoperative gastric leak was evaluated. From 2006 through 2011, 160 patients underwent LSG with suturing as the only staple-line reinforcement (Group A).

Discontinuation of preoperative clopidogrel is unnecessary in peripheral arterial surgery.

Objective: The optimal management of preoperative clopidogrel remains controversial, as vascular surgeons are increasingly encountering patients treated with clopidogrel as part of dual antiplatelet therapy. Current practice differs considerably, from cessation of the medication at least 5 days before surgery to proceeding with surgery without delay. The purpose of this prospective, nonrandomized, comparative study was to determine the effect of preoperative exposure to clopidogrel and aspirin on perioperative bleeding complications in patients undergoing open arterial surgery.

Influence of serum percentage on the behavior of Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stem cells in culture.

Background: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent cells able to differentiate into several lineages with valuable applications in regenerative medicine. MSCs differentiation is highly dependent on physicochemical properties of the culture substrate, cell density and on culture medium composition.

Objective: In this study, we assessed the influence of fetal bovine serum (FBS) level on Wharton's jelly (WJ)-MSCs behavior seeded on polyelectrolyte multilayer films (PEMF) made of four bilayers of poly-allylamine hydrochloride (PAH) as polycation and poly-styrene sulfonate (PSS) as polyanion.

[Giant mediastinal cystic lymphangioma: clinical case and review of the literature].

Benign cystic lymphangioma is a relatively rare tumor of the human body. It's more frequent in young patients. It is usually localized in the neck but may have mediastinal or intra-abdominal localization.

[Clinico-pathological correlation--Lebanese experience].

This is a retrospective and descriptive study done at an academic hospital center. It collects data about 143 patients admitted during 10 years at the hospital, between January 1989 and December 2000, to have renal biopsy for suspicion of glomerulopathy. The glomerulonephritides most frequently present were: mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis (15%), membrano-proliferative glomerulonephritis (13%), chronic glomerulonephritis (13%), membranous glomerulonephritis (8%), proliferative focal and segmental glomerulonephritis (8%) and scleronodular focal glomerulonephritis (8%).
