Background: The World Health Organization advocates for the achievement of 100% voluntary non-remunerated blood donation (VNRD) globally by the year 2020. However, until today, little was known in Lebanon regarding its actual rate or influencing factors, particularly donor motivations and behaviors. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of blood donors in Lebanon.

Acute diarrhea is a prevalent disease worldwide and a cause of mortality in low and middle-income countries. In previous studies, the causative enteropathogen is found in 38% to 58% of patients, leaving a considerable diagnostic gap. In this study, we intend to determine the pathogenic agents responsible for acute diarrhea in patients presenting to the Emergency Departments of several Lebanese hospitals.

Cystinosis is a rare autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder characterized by cystine buildup in various tissues, including the kidneys. Renal involvement is the primary manifestation, leading to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) if left untreated. Kidney transplantation (KT) in patients with cystinosis has significantly improved their prognosis for the disease outcome.

Background: Invasive fungal infections have presented a challenge in treatment. In the past, it was known that the frontrunner in such infections is s with little emphasis placed on non-albicans species (NAC). Studies worldwide have shown a rise in fungal infections attributed to non-albicans species.

Background: Induction agents have proved to reduce the rate of acute rejection (AR) in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) without improving long-term graft and patient survival (PS).
Objective: This study evaluates the utility of induction therapy in low immunological risk KTRs regardless of donor-to-recipient HLA matching.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 218 patients undergoing kidney transplantation (KT).

To determine the existence of guidelines regarding the appropriate clinical use of blood and blood components, transfusion requests, and blood issuing/reception documents and procedures. The different bedside transfusion organizations/processes and hemovigilance are also analyzed. The ultimate objective is to identify safe potential options in order to improve blood safety at the lowest cost.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a prevalent hematological malignancy. Resource-constrained settings such as the Middle East are particularly burdened by the increasing trends in MM morbidity and mortality in addition to challenges in the management of MM. It thus becomes necessary to identify and address debatable areas of current practice and gaps in the management of MM in the Middle East.

Background: Chronic cough management necessitates a clear integrated care pathway approach. Primary care physicians initially encounter the majority of chronic cough patients, yet their role in proper management can prove challenging due to limited access to advanced diagnostic testing. A multidisciplinary approach involving otolaryngologists and chest physicians, allergists, and gastroenterologists, among others, is central to the optimal diagnosis and treatment of conditions which underly or worsen cough.

Background and objective Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-PE) are rapidly emerging worldwide. This study aimed to assess the effect of contact precaution (CP) on ESBL-PE-colonization rates among nurses in three hospitals in Beirut, Lebanon, where ESBL is endemic, in order to define the risk factors for colonization. Accordingly, the ongoing use of CP to prevent ESBL-PE transmission to healthy nurses was evaluated.

Background: Treatment with erythropoietin is well established for anemia in chronic kidney disease patients but not well studied in acute kidney injury.
Methods: This is a multicenter, randomized, pragmatic controlled clinical trial. It included 134 hospitalized patients with anemia defined as hemoglobin < 11 g/dL and acute kidney injury defined as an increase of serum creatinine of ≥ 0.

Genetic renal phosphate leak is one of the rare disorders in recurrent stone formers with absorptive hypercalciuria. Diagnosis and appropriate management may change the life of patients. To provide answers on how and when to make the diagnosis of genetic renal phosphate leak and how medical management prevents the recurrences and changes patients' life, we conducted a retrospective study including nine patients with recurrent nephrolithiasis and a confirmed genetic mutation of a phosphate transporter between 2008 and 2019 in our multidisciplinary center at the Pitié Salpetriere Hospital, Paris, France.

Data comparing the occurrence of gastroesophageal cancer after gastric bypass procedures are lacking and are only available in the form of case reports. We perform in this study a systematic review and a meta-analysis of all the reported cases of gastroesophageal cancer following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and loop gastric bypass-one anastomosis gastric bypass/mini gastric bypass (LGB-OAGB/MGB). We conducted a systematic review of all the reported cases in articles referenced in PubMed/Medline, Cochrane, and Scholar Google.

Background: QTc interval prolongation has been reported when combining fluoroquinolones and triazoles for chemoprophylaxis in cancer patients. Herein, we aimed to identify the prevalence and contributing factors to QTc prolongation in hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) recipients who received these agents during the neutropenic phase.
Methods: This is a retrospective medical chart review conducted at a university hospital in Lebanon from 2017 to 2020.

Background: Chronic cough can be triggered by respiratory and non-respiratory tract illnesses originating mainly from the upper and lower airways, and the GI tract (ie, reflux). Recent findings suggest it can also be a prominent feature in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), laryngeal hyperresponsiveness, and COVID-19. The classification of chronic cough is constantly updated but lacks clear definition.

Background: Cough features a complex peripheral and central neuronal network. The function of the chemosensitive and stretch (afferent) cough receptors is well described but partly understood. It is speculated that chronic cough reflects a neurogenic inflammation of the cough reflex, which becomes hypersensitive.

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a clinical-radiological syndrome often associated with immunosuppressant drug use, renal disease, and eclampsia and characterized by parieto-occipital vasogenic edema that usually resolves within days. Globally and in the settings of renal transplant, literature concerning PRES is very scattered. In this report, we provide two cases, one diagnosed with IgA nephropathy and another with nephrotic syndrome type 9 that developed episodes of tonic-clonic seizure immediately after renal transplant in case 1 and four days post-transplant in case 2.
