Epileptic and cognitive symptomatologies are among the most typical manifestations of uremic encephalopathy. Several guanidino compounds (GCs) may play an important role in the etiology of uremic encephalopathy. Four GCs appeared to be highly increased as well in serum, cerebrospinal fluid, and brain of uremic patients, whereas the levels of other metabolically relevant GCs were not or only moderately increased and others were even decreased.

For optimal embryo selection in IVF/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), knowledge of the implantation potential is essential. This is a retrospective analysis of morphological characteristics and cleavage kinetics of day 3 embryos resulting in an objective assessment of the relative implantation potential of each distinct type of embryo. Therefore transferred embryos were sampled according to their documented implantation behaviour: all embryos without any implantation on the one hand and all those with 100% ongoing implantation on the other.

Iodine-123 15-(p-iodophenyl)-3-R,S-methylpentadecanoic acid (BMIPP) can be used to image myocardial fatty acid regional distribution and utilisation with single-photon emission tomography (SPET). By visual analysis, a mismatching with regional uptake of BMIPP less than that of a perfusion tracer has been shown to predict myocardial viability and functional improvement after restoration of flow in patients with myocardial infarction. The current study aimed to evaluate a newly developed quantitative method of analysis of sestamibi and BMIPP uptake for the prediction of functional recovery after revascularization in patients with acute infarction.

Decreased serum levels of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) are common in patients with fibromyalgia, which is frequently associated with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Twenty patients with CFS (7 men, 13 women; age range, 30-60 years) and age- and sex-matched controls were tested for peak GH responses to insulin-induced hypoglycaemia and arginine administration. Nocturnal secretion of GH and serum levels of IGF-I were also measured.

It has been generally accepted that triplets after IVF/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) can and should be avoided by adopting a standard strategy of replacing no more than two embryos. However, there is an increasing awareness of the risks and costs and of the epidemic size of twin pregnancies after IVF/ICSI. This has resulted in efforts to replace no more than one embryo.

Although epidemiologic studies, animal experiments and receptor studies have shown that not only normal ovaries but also many malignant ovarian tumors can be considered as endocrine related and hormone dependent, the place of hormonal therapy in the management of patients with ovarian cancer remains unsettled. Most trials of hormonal treatment in ovarian cancer have been retrospective, involved only limited numbers of patients, and lacked important patient-related data and information pertaining to tumor characteristics. In addition, a variety of hormonal preparations with different degrees of potency and in different dosages were included in these studies.

Purpose: We compared initial outcome, peri-procedural complications and long-term clinical follow-up of elective Wiktor GX stent implantation in severely narrowed vein grafts to a historic register of elective angioplasties in saphenous vein grafts in the same center.
Methods: Eighty-one consecutive patients with angina and a history of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), all received elective angioplasty (PTCA) of the diseased graft; we described them as group P. The next 38 consecutive patients were treated with elective angioplasty and Wiktor Stent implantation, followed by one month ticlopidine; they were called group S.

To evaluate the protective effect of 1% sodium hyaluronate (Healon) vs. a mixture of 4% chondroitin sulfate and 3% sodium hyaluronate (Viscoat) on the central corneal endothelium during surgery, we prospectively examined 20 eyes of 20 patients who underwent clear corneal phacoemulsification and implantation of an intracapsular posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC-IOL) with either Healon (10 eyes) or a combined use of Viscoat and Healon (10 eyes) as viscoelastic material. We compared the central endothelial cell counts, recorded by specular microscopy, preoperatively and 6 weeks postoperatively.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the anatomic and visual outcomes, as well as the complications, of macular hole surgery with SF6-gas tamponade versus silicone-oil tamponade. Fifty-four (54) eyes with idiopathic macular hole underwent vitrectomy and peeling of the internal limiting membrane (ILM) around the hole. Nineteen (19) eyes were treated with SF6-gas tamponade (group 1) and the other thirty-five (35) eyes with silicone-oil tamponade (group 2).

Arylsulfatase A (ASA)-deficient mice constitute an animal model for the inherited lysosomal storage disease, metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD). Brainstem auditory-evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded in control and ASA-deficient mice of 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. BAEPs were evoked in control mice of all ages studied, but were completely absent in ASA (-/-) mice of 9 and 12 months.

A prospective randomized study comparing single embryo transfer with double embryo transfer after in-vitro fertilization or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) was carried out. First, top quality embryo characteristics were delineated by retrospectively analysing embryos resulting in ongoing twins after double embryo transfer. A top quality embryo was characterized by the presence of 4 or 5 blastomeres at day 2 and at least 7 blastomeres on day 3 after insemination, the absence of multinucleated blastomeres and <20% cellular fragments on day 2 and day 3 after fertilization.

Unlabelled: Mismatching between beta-methyl-p-iodophenyl-pentadecanoic acid (BMIPP) and perfusion accurately predicts functional outcome after acute myocardial infarction. The current investigation was aimed at evaluating the value of this method to predict the evolution of global function according to the applied treatment in patients with chronic ischemic heart disease.
Methods: Twenty patients with infarction and chronic left ventricular dysfunction were studied (median infarction age 12 wk, range 2 wk-15 y).

In longitudinal brain studies of dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT), the cerebellum is often used as a reference region for single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) quantification, which assumes no significant regional influence of physiological fluctuations or pathology. With the use of absolute quantification in DAT patients, reproducibility of cerebellar uptake of technetium-99m-d,l-hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (HMPAO) was tested and compared with the mean absolute cerebellar tracer uptake value in DAT patients and healthy control subjects. In 13 DAT patients SPECT studies were repeated within 2 weeks to assess reproducibility of cerebellar regional brain uptake (rBU).

In most in-vitro fertilization (IVF)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) programmes approximately one ongoing pregnancy in three is multiple. The need to characterize embryos with optimal implantation potential is obvious. We retrospectively examined all of 23 double transfers resulting in ongoing twins, occurring between January 1, 1996 and May 19, 1997.

We report on a 30-year-old female with a pituitary-dependent Cushing's disease, who refused transsphenoidal surgery and was treated with ketoconazole and cabergoline. After approximately 3 years of therapy, the patient herself decided, without the knowledge of her treating physician, to interrupt contraception. As the patient became pregnant she ceased the intake of all medication (between the third and seventh week), but resumed it soon after pregnancy was diagnosed because of relapsing clinical signs.

Bronchopulmonary sequestrations are malformations that are often congenital; they consist of isolated nonfunctioning lung segments having no communication with functional tracheobronchial elements of the surrounding lung. They are supplied by single or multiple branches from the distal thoracic or proximal abdominal aorta, or from the celiac, splenic, intercostal, subclavian, or pulmonary artery. Due to the absence of ventilation, the lung tissue can become chronically infected.

Using iodine-123 labelled radiotracers, the presence of 2.5% high-energy photons causes image deterioration due to increased scatter. To investigate the influence of these photons on image quality, we measured the spectrum of 123I with a medium-energy (ME), a low-energy all-purpose (LEAP) and a low-energy high-resolution (LEHR) collimator.

Unlabelled: Discordant uptake (mismatching) of 123I-labeled beta-methyl-piodophenyl-pentadecanoic acid (BMIPP) less than 99mTc-labeled methoxyisobutyl isonitrile (MIBI) is a good predictor of myocardial viability. However, methodological factors can influence assessment of the presence of mismatching because of differences in background activity between the tracers. In this study, we investigated the influence of methodological parameters on the mismatching between BMIPP and MIBI in patients with chronic ischemic heart disease.
