Background: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a substantial UK health burden, but there is variation in care, facilities and in opinion regarding management. We conducted an audit of service provision and care of patients with AIH in 28 UK hospitals.
Methods: Centres provided information about staffing, infrastructure and patient management (measured against predefined guideline-based standards) via a web-based data collection tool.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious healthcare problem that affects public health globally. Appropriate understanding and knowledge of prudent antimicrobial use and resistance, along with providing evidence-based information sources, are needed for informed antibiotic prescribing practices. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, opportunity, motivation, behavior of pharmacists and their information sources regarding antibiotic use and resistance in Jordan.

Introduction: Scaphoid radiography has poor sensitivity for acute fracture detection and often requires repeat delayed imaging. Although magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is considered the gold standard, computed tomography (CT) is often used as an alternative due to ease of access. Cone-Beam CT (CBCT) offers equivalent diagnostic efficacy to Multi Slice CT (MSCT) at reduced dose.

Introduction: Postgraduate education in computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) varies globally. Multiple factors affect the development of associated core skills and competencies for these specialist roles. Previous research has highlighted that different teaching standards and methods may influence radiographers' confidence and competencies.

Background: Patients with a displaced fracture of the distal radius are frequently offered surgical fixation. Manipulation of the fracture and moulded plaster casting is an alternative treatment that avoids metal implants, but evidence of its effectiveness is lacking.
Objective: To compare functional outcomes, quality-of-life outcomes, complications and resource use among patients with a dorsally displaced fracture of the distal radius treated with manipulation and surgical fixation with Kirschner wires (K-wires) and those treated with manipulation and moulded cast.

Introduction: Twitter journal clubs are a relatively new adaptation of an established continuing professional development (CPD) activity within healthcare. The medical radiation science (MRS) journal club 'MedRadJClub' (MRJC) was founded in March 2015 by a group of academics, researchers and clinicians as an international forum for the discussion of peer-reviewed papers. To investigate the reach and impact of MRJC, a five-year analysis was conducted.

Background: Adherence to adjuvant endocrine therapy is affected by medication side-effects and associated distress. Previous interventions focused on educating women to enhance adherence have proved minimally effective. We co-designed an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) intervention to enhance medication decision-making and quality of life by targeting a broader range of factors, including side-effect management and psychological flexibility.

Consultant Orthodontist and Postgraduate Dental Dean, The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, UK.
The guidelines regarding balancing and compensating extractions, published by the Royal College of Surgeons of England, are based on relatively low-level evidence and it is highlighted in the guidance that further research into these areas is required. This paper aims to appraise the current evidence base regarding balancing and compensating extractions, to aid general dental practitioners in their decision making. General and clinical factors that should be considered in the treatment planning process are discussed throughout.

Introduction: Lung cancer remains a major cause of preventable death and early diagnosis is critical to improving survival chances. The chest X-ray (CXR) remains the most common initial investigation, but clinical pathways need to support timely diagnosis through, where necessary, escalation of abnormal findings to ensure priority reporting and early CT scan.
Methods: This single-centre study included a retrospective evaluation of a rapid lung cancer CXR pathway in its first year of operation (May 2018-April 2019).

We describe an unusual case of a male patient presenting with penile and testicular swelling following an unprotected and traumatic sexual encounter. It was suspected that an isolated penile injury occurred during intercourse; however, ultrasound imaging identified an intact tunical layer and right-sided epididymo-orchitis. Following screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), he was discharged with antibiotics and advice to attend the Sexual Health Centre for contact tracing.

Objectives: Scaphoid fractures are challenging to accurately diagnose with delayed and missed diagnoses risking poor patient outcomes. Cone beam CT (CBCT) is an emerging technology facilitating alternative access to multi-planar imaging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of early CBCT in the diagnosis of suspected scaphoid fractures presenting via the Emergency Department (ED).

Objective: Biological therapies and small molecules continue to be evaluated in moderate to severely active ulcerative colitis, but are often studied in placebo-controlled trials, meaning their relative efficacy and safety is unknown. We examined this in a network meta-analysis.
Design: We searched the literature to October 2021 to identify eligible trials.

Background: Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) outbreaks have been reported previously in burns centres with resulting mortality and morbidity. This article describes the first human-associated outbreak in the UK caused by a strain of mupirocin-resistant (MuR) livestock-associated MRSA clonal complex 398 (LA-MRSA CC398) in an adult burns centre. The centre historically had a very low prevalence of MRSA infections.

Introduction: Since the onset of the pandemic, prescribing antimicrobials has become a common practice to treat patients infected with COVID-19.
Areas Covered: A systematic literature search was performed in the electronic databases MEDLINE, CINAHL, WHO COVID-19 database, including EMBASE, Scopus, WHO-COVID, LILACS, and Google Scholar to identify original articles published up to 31 July 2021. A random-effects model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence or proportion of antimicrobial consumption among COVID-19 patients.

We present the case of a female teenager who sustained nitrous oxide burns to the medial aspect of both thighs from contact with a nitrous oxide canister being used to fill balloons. There was a delay in presentation as the injury was not initially recognised. These burns were initially assessed as being superficial partial-thickness burns but took a prolonged time to heal despite regular wound care.

Emergency Department, Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, Wakefield, UK.
Background: The suspected scaphoid fracture remains a diagnostic conundrum with over-treatment a common risk-averse strategy. Cross-sectional imaging remains the gold standard with MRI recommended but CT used by some because of easier access or limited MRI availability. The aim of this feasibility study was to evaluate whether cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) could support early diagnosis, or exclusion, of scaphoid fractures.

Patients with haematological malignancies have a high risk of severe infection and death from SARS-CoV-2. In this prospective observational study, we investigated the impact of cancer type, disease activity, and treatment in 877 unvaccinated UK patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection and active haematological cancer. The primary end-point was all-cause mortality.

Background: Primary ciliopathies represent a group of inherited disorders due to defects in the primary cilium, the 'cell's antenna'. The 100,000 Genomes Project was launched in 2012 by Genomics England (GEL), recruiting National Health Service (NHS) patients with eligible rare diseases and cancer. Sequence data were linked to Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) terms entered by recruiting clinicians.

Atypical triplane fractures are unusual, but when they occur, the anteromedial epiphyseal sleeve avulsion pattern appears to be the most frequent. We present a classic case of the latter, which supports the introduction of an additional category to the classification of these fractures.
