We analyzed the translational and rotational Brownian motion of aggregates of micrometer-sized silica spheres under microgravity conditions and in rarefied gas. The experimental data was collected in the form of high-speed recordings using a long-distance microscope as part of the ICAPS (Interactions in Cosmic and Atmospheric Particle Systems) experiment on board of the sounding rocket flight Texus-56. Our data analysis shows that the translational Brownian motion can be used to determine the mass and translational response time of each individual dust aggregate.

We present an experimental and two-phase computational study of convection in a liquid bridge ([Formula: see text]) that develops under the action of a parallel gas flow. The study focuses on tracking the evolution of hydrothermal waves by increasing the applied temperature difference [Formula: see text] and the temperature of gas moving at the velocity [Formula: see text]. Our experiments revealed certain regularity in the change of oscillatory states with an increase in the control parameters.

The transport of platelets in blood is commonly assumed to obey an advection-diffusion equation with a diffusion constant given by the so-called Zydney-Colton theory. Here we reconsider this hypothesis based on experimental observations and numerical simulations including a fully resolved suspension of red blood cells and platelets subject to a shear. We observe that the transport of platelets perpendicular to the flow can be characterized by a non-trivial distribution of velocities with and exponential decreasing bulk, followed by a power law tail.

Fragmented QRS (fQRS) is an electrocardiographic (ECG) marker of myocardial conduction abnormality, characterized by additional notches in the QRS complex. The presence of fQRS has been associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality and arrhythmia in patients with cardiovascular disease. However, current binary visual analysis is prone to intra- and inter-observer variability and different definitions are problematic in clinical practice.

Changes in respiratory rate have been found to be one of the early signs of health deterioration in patients. In remote environments where diagnostic tools and medical attention are scarce, such as deep space exploration, the monitoring of the respiratory signal becomes crucial to timely detect life-threatening conditions. Nowadays, this signal can be measured using wearable technology; however, the use of such technology is often hampered by the low quality of the recordings, which leads more often to wrong diagnosis and conclusions.

The effect of traces of ethanol in supercritical carbon dioxide on the mixture's thermodynamic properties is studied by molecular simulations and Taylor dispersion measurements. This mixture is investigated along the isobar p = 10 MPa in the temperature range between T = 304 and 343 K. Along this path, the mixture undergoes two transitions: First, the Widom line is crossed, marking the transition from liquid-like to gas-like conditions.

With laboratory and numerical work, we demonstrate that one of the main diffusion coefficients and the smaller eigenvalue of the Fick diffusion matrix are invariant to the number of methylene groups of the alcohol in ternary mixtures composed of an aromatic (benzene), a ketone (acetone) and one of three different alcohols (methanol, ethanol or 2-propanol). A critical analysis of the relationship between the kinetic and thermodynamic contributions to the diffusion coefficients allows us to explain this intriguing behaviour of this class of mixture. These findings are reflected by the diffusive behaviour of the according binary subsystems.

A model, along with analytical and numerical solutions, is presented to describe a wide variety of one-dimensional slow flows of compressible heat-conductive fluids. The model is based on the approximation of uniform pressure valid for the flows, in which the sound propagation time is much shorter than the duration of any meaningful density variation in the system. In spite of considerable research on the nature of aqueous alcohol mixtures that are characterized by microscopic inhomogeneity or incomplete mixing at the molecular level, transport properties have received little attention. We report the results of a study on diffusion in the ternary mixture of water with two alcohols, that is, water + methanol + ethanol, which is investigated on microscopic and macroscopic scales by means of molecular simulation and Taylor dispersion experiments. A novel protocol is developed for the comparison of mutual diffusion coefficients sampled by two fundamentally different approaches, which allows for their critical analysis.

We report the Fickian diffusion coefficients in 20 ternary mixtures formed by 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene (THN), isobutylbenzene (IBB) and n-dodecane (nC12) measured by the Taylor dispersion technique at 298.1 K and atmospheric pressure. Four diffusion coefficients of the ternary mixtures were measured along six concentration paths starting on one binary subsystem and moving toward the other one.

We present a comprehensive experimental study of isothermal Fickian diffusion in the ternary and binary liquid mixtures of water, ethanol, and triethylene glycol over the entire ternary composition space. 21 ternary mixtures inside the composition triangle have been investigated by means of the Taylor dispersion technique and 30 binary mixtures by Taylor dispersion and/or optical beam deflection in a Soret cell. The scalar binary diffusion coefficient has been determined along all three binary boundaries of the composition space and compared with estimations based on the Stokes-Einstein relation using stick or slip boundary conditions.

We explore the peculiar behaviour of an interface between two miscible liquids of similar (but non-identical) viscosities and densities under horizontal vibration with a frequency less than 25 Hz. Significant differences in the structure of the formed patterns were found between microgravity and ground experiments. In a gravity field, a spatially periodic saw-tooth frozen structure is generated in the interface which dissipates at long times.

We present a comprehensive analysis of experimental results obtained for Fickian diffusion in the benchmark ternary liquid mixture of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene, isobutylbenzene, and dodecane (nC12) with equal mass fractions. Isothermal diffusion coefficients have been measured by two independent experimental methods: by Taylor dispersion technique, and by a counter flow cell fitted with an optical interferometry device. The experimental diffusion matrices have been critically analyzed regarding the Onsager reciprocal relations, for which we introduce a matrix asymmetry index s(2) that is independent of the frame of reference and the component order.

In this paper, we present a procedure to separate aggregates of overlapped particles in digital holograms, based on a focus plane analysis applied to each particle. The method can be applied either on phase or on amplitude objects, according that each object has a border in one focus plane. Numerical simulations are performed to quantify the robustness of the process by increasing the overlapping areas between the particles.

In this paper, we investigate the use of a digital holographic microscope working with partially coherent spatial illumination for an automated detection and classification of living organisms. A robust automatic method based on the computation of propagating matrices is proposed to detect the 3D position of organisms. We apply this procedure to the evaluation of drinking water resources by developing a classification process to identify parasitic protozoan Giardia lamblia cysts among two other similar organisms.

We analyze the dependency and the accuracy of the refocusing criterion based on the integrated modulus amplitude in the case of amplitude object. Analytical dependencies on the defocus distance and the numerical aperture are found. This theoretical prediction for the refocusing criterion is well supported by simulation.
