With growing environmental concerns and the need for sustainable energy, multifunctional materials that can simultaneously address water treatment and clean energy production are in high demand. In this study, we developed a cost-effective method to synthesize zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires via the anodic oxidation of zinc foil. By carefully controlling the anodization time, we optimized the Zn/ZnO-5 min electrode to achieve impressive dual-function performance in terms of effective photoelectrocatalysis for water splitting and waste water treatment.

Two different microstructures of an Al-12Si (wt. %) alloy were produced, respectively, via a powder laser bed fusion (P-LBF) additive manufacturing and casting. Compared to casting, additive manufacturing of Al-based alloy requires extra care to minimize oxidation tendency.

This study points out the importance of the templating effect in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite semiconductors grown on graphene. By combining two achiral materials, we report the formation of a chiral composite heterostructure with electronic band splitting. The effect is observed through circularly polarized light emission and detection in a graphene/α-CH(NH)PbI perovskite composite, at ambient temperature and without a magnetic field.

In this work, we present an advancement in the encapsulation of lithium yttrium fluoride-based (YLiF:Yb,Er) upconversion nanocrystals (UCNPs) with silica (SiO) shells through a reverse microemulsion technique, achieving UCNPs@SiO core/shell structures. Key parameters of this approach were optimized to eliminate the occurrence of core-free silica particles and ensure a controlled silica shell thickness growth on the UCNPs. The optimal conditions for this method were using 6 mg of UCNPs, 1.

In this work, we successfully integrated fluorescent nanodiamonds (FNDs) and lanthanide ion-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) in a nanocomposite structure for simultaneous optical temperature sensing. The effective integration of FND and UCNP shells was confirmed by employing high-resolution TEM imaging, X-ray diffraction, and dual-excitation optical spectroscopy. Furthermore, the synthesized ND@UCNP nanocomposites were tested by making simultaneous optical temperature measurements, and the detected temperatures showed excellent agreement within their sensitivity limit.

The deformation aspects associated with the micro-mechanical properties of the powder laser bed fusion (P-LBF) additively manufactured stainless steel 316L were investigated in the present work. Toward that, micro-pillars were fabricated on different planes of the stainless steel 316L specimen with respect to build direction, and an in situ compression was carried out inside the chamber of the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results were compared against the compositionally similar stainless steel 316L, which was fabricated by a conventional method, that is, casting.

Preterm labor is a growing health problem that causes newborn death, and safe and effective therapy is significantly needed. Arabin pessaries and progesterone are preventive and therapeutic approaches that can be applied to managing the short cervix; hence, reducing the risk of preterm labor. The main goal of current work is to fabricate a novel nanofiber formulation based on polycaprolactone (PCL) and loaded with progesterone to coat for Arabin pessaries to be used as dual preventive and therapeutic approaches for local vaginal delivery.

SU-8 polymers are promising materials for various applications due to their low cost, excellent thermal stability, and outstanding mechanical properties. Cross-linking of SU-8 is a crucial process that determines the properties of the materials. This study investigates the effect of cross-linking of free-standing SU-8 films on optical transmission and PL emission under various curing conditions.

Additive manufacturing (AM) of stainless steel is more difficult than other metallic materials, as the major alloying elements of the stainless steel are prone to oxidation during the fabrication process. In the current work, specimens of the stainless steel 316L were made by the powder laser bed fusion (P-LBF) additive manufacturing process. These specimens were investigated by electron microscopy and micro-/nano-indentation techniques to investigate the microstructural aspects and the mechanical properties, respectively.

Upconversion Nanoparticles (UCNPs) have attracted exceptional attention due to their great potential in high-contrast, free-background biofluorescence deep tissue imaging and quantum sensing. Most of these interesting studies have been performed using an ensemble of UCNPs as fluorescent probes in bioapplications. Here, we report a synthesis of small and efficient YLiF:Yb,Er UCNPs for single-particle imaging as well as sensitive optical temperature sensing.

The aim of the present study was a qualitative assessment of potential microplastics (MPs) in the sewage effluent collected from a local sewage treatment plant located in Riyadh City, Saudi Arabia. The composite samples of domestic sewage effluent were subjected to UV (ultraviolet) light-induced zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) mediated photocatalysis. The first phase of the study included the synthesis of the ZnONPs with an extensive characterization.

Additive manufacturing (AM) of Ni-based super alloys is more challenging, compared to the production other metallic alloys. This is due to their high melting point and excellent high temperature resistance. In the present work, an Inconel 718 alloy was fabricated by a powder laser bed fusion (P-LBF) process and investigated to assess its microstructural evolution, together with mechanical properties.

The present work investigates the formation and microstructural and micro-mechanical characterization of the recast layer that formed on Inconel 718 alloy in the course of the wire electro-discharge machining (WEDM). The as-machined surface contains globules, shallow cracks, and re-deposition of molten materials, together with the elements from the decomposition of wire electrode and electrolyte, which does not exceed beyond the surface of the recast layer. Under presently investigated machining parameters, the recast layer was about 6.
