The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has developed Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) for the Return to Play to Pre-Injury Level Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injury . Evidence-based information, in conjunction with the clinical expertise of physicians, was used to develop the criteria to determine the appropriateness of return to play to pre-injury level after an ACL injury. The AUC for the Return to Play to Pre-Injury Level Following ACL Injury were derived by identifying clinical indications typical of patients wishing to return to play after an ACL injury.

The headache research priorities: Research goals from the American Headache Society and an international multistakeholder expert group.

Objective: To identify and disseminate research priorities for the headache field that should be areas of research focus during the next 10 years.

Background: Establishing research priorities helps focus and synergize the work of headache investigators, allowing them to reach the most important research goals more efficiently and completely.

Methods: The Headache Research Priorities organizing and executive committees and working group chairs led a multistakeholder and international group of experts to develop headache research priorities.

The differential diagnosis of unilateral sinus disease (USD) is broad, and while concerning etiologies like sinonasal neoplasia, invasive fungal sinusitis, and cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea should always be considered, most cases are due to noninvasive inflammatory or infectious conditions. To diagnose USD appropriately, clinicians must integrate the clinical history and examination, nasal endoscopy, computed tomography (CT), and possibly MRI. Odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) is the most common cause of unilateral maxillary sinus opacification on CT, with 45% to 75% of such cases being odontogenic in nature.

Background: Knots are the weakest structural point in a suture line and inevitably weaken almost all suture materials. This practical review critically evaluates the factors, such as suture material properties, gauge, configuration, throw count, and tail length, that affect knot security.

Methods: A PubMed search between the years 1934 and 2023 identified relevant studies that addressed factors relating to knot security.

Fertility preservation in pediatric central nervous system tumors: A report from the Children's Oncology Group.

The Oncofertility Consortium Pediatric Initiative Network has published recommendations about the risks of infertility due to gonadotoxic therapy. We abstracted gonadotoxic therapies from central nervous system (CNS) Children's Oncology Group (COG) protocols between 2000 and 2022. We assigned them as unknown, minimal, significant, or high levels of increased risk for gonadal dysfunction/infertility.

Treatment Adherence Rates and Long-Term Mortality in a Quaternary Multidisciplinary Heart Team: An Observational Cohort.

Background: A multidisciplinary heart team (HT) approach to patients with complex coronary artery disease has a class IB recommendation, yet there are limited data on adherence to HT treatment recommendations and long-term clinical follow-up. The objective of this study was to assess adherence rates to HT recommendations and assess long-term mortality rates among patients with complex CAD.

Methods And Results: Six hundred eighty-four sequential HT cases for complex coronary artery disease from January 2015 to May 2017 were reviewed.

Perioperative Outcomes Using Single-Fire Stapler.

Background: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is the most common bariatric surgery performed worldwide. The Titan stapler aims to standardize the sleeve gastrectomy by eliminating inconsistencies and simplifying the procedure.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed on all patients > 18 years of age undergoing LSG using the Titan.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe a case of Nocardia chorioretinitis-related choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in a patient with anti-GM-CSF antibodies with resolution of choroidal neovascularization and visual recovery following a series of intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor.

Methods: This study is a case report.

Results: In our case, a 50-year-old female, thought to be immunocompetent, presented with metamorphopsia and decreased visual acuity in the left eye in the setting of disseminated Nocardiosis.

A novel artificial intelligence model for diagnosing Acanthamoeba keratitis through confocal microscopy.

Purpose: To develop an artificial intelligence (AI) model to diagnose Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) based on in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) images extracted from the Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph 3 (HRT 3).

Methods: This retrospective cohort study utilized HRT 3 IVCM images from patients who had received a culture-confirmed diagnosis of AK between 2013 and 2021 at Massachusetts Eye and Ear. Two cornea specialists independently labeled the images as AK or nonspecific finding (NSF) in a blind manner.

Bilateral Facial Paralysis in an Atypical Clinical Onset of COVID-Associated Guillain-Barre Syndrome.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been associated with a diverse range of extrapulmonary manifestations since its global outbreak in 2019. One of its rare complications is Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a post-infectious neurological disorder that manifests with a characteristic ascending limb paralysis. Here, we describe the atypical case of a 42-year-old African American male who developed bilateral facial paralysis within five weeks of testing positive for COVID-19.

Disparities in HPV Vaccination Among Adolescents by Health Care Facility Type.

Importance: Approximately 31 000 cases of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated cancers are diagnosed annually in the US. The HPV vaccine can prevent more than 90% of these cancers, yet national uptake remains lower than the Healthy People 2030 target of 80% completion. To devise targeted interventions to increase the uptake of HPV vaccines, it is crucial to understand the vaccination rates across various health care settings.

Barriers in early detection of colorectal cancer and exploring potential solutions.

This editorial discusses the literature review article by Tonini and Zanni, the paper was published in January 2024, and the authors provided very interesting conclusions regarding existing barriers to the early diagnosis of colon cancer. Many cancers do not have identifiable precursors, or there are currently no screening tests to find them. Therefore, these cancers do not have preventive screening options.

Acute Constipation and A Stercoral Perforation: A Case Report.

Stercoral perforation typically arises as a sequela of chronic constipation and can lead to bowel perforation due to fecal impaction. While uncommon, maintaining a high clinical suspicion in the appropriate setting is crucial. We present a case report involving a 52-year-old female with no history of chronic constipation, who presented with an unexplained large bowel obstruction.

15-Gene Expression Profile and as Integrated Prognostic Test for Uveal Melanoma: First Report of Collaborative Ocular Oncology Group Study No. 2 (COOG2.1).

Background: Breast Cancer and cardiovascular diseases are amongst the two leading causes of mortality in the United States, and the two conditions are connected in part because of recognized cardiotoxicity of cancer treatments. The aim of this study is to investigate the predictors risk factors for thirty-day readmission in female breast cancer survivors presenting with acute heart failure.

Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of acute heart failure (AHF) hospitalization in female patients with breast cancer in 2019 using the National Readmission Database (NRD), which is the largest publicly available all-payer inpatient readmission database in the United States.

Background and objective Butter coffee drinks, mainly a form of a saturated fat diet, are widely accepted as a "healthy energy-boosting drink", especially in the young and healthy military population. The objective of our study was to determine the effects of medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil and butter on lipid profile, especially apolipoprotein B (ApoB), low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol (HDL-C), and other risk factors for coronary heart disease, such as BMI, BP, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels in healthy adults. Materials and methods We conducted a prospective study of 60 subjects who were randomized to one of the two following regimens: (1) coffee or (2) coffee with butter plus MCT oil combination.

Background: Acellular dermal matrix (ADM) has been the go-to biomaterial in post-mastectomy breast reconstruction, particularly in pre-pectoral reconstruction. ADM is thought to decrease capsular contracture, control the pocket, and increase soft tissue, but may yield more complications. This study evaluated whether ADM is even needed.
