Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a type of primary immunodeficiency that presents as a heterogenous disorder characterized by hypogammaglobinemia, poor response to vaccines, recurrent sinopulmonary infections, and can have noninfectious systemic manifestations. We performed a single-center, retrospective, observational study of five patients with noninfectious complications of CVID. All patients had CVID as defined by the European Society of Immunodeficiencies criteria and had received intravenous immunoglobulin therapy.

Introduction: Despite progress in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) treatment, challenges persist in medication adherence due to side effects and costs. The aquifer in the subseafloor igneous basement is a massive, continuous microbial substrate, yet sparingly little is known about life in this habitat. The work to date has focused largely on describing microbial diversity in the young basement (<10 Ma), where the basaltic crust is still porous and fluid flow through it is active. Here, we test the hypothesis that microbial life exists in subseafloor basement >65 Ma using samples collected from the Louisville Seamount Chain via seafloor drilling.

PDHK1 is a non-canonical Ser/Thr kinase that negatively regulates the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC), restricting entry of acetyl-CoA into the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and downregulating oxidative phosphorylation. In many glycolytic tumors, PDHK1 is overexpressed to suppress activity of the PDC and cause a shift in metabolism toward an increased reliance on glycolysis (the Warburg effect). Genetic studies have shown that knockdown or knockout of PDHK1 reverts this phenotype and inhibits tumor growth in vitro and in vivo, but chemical tools to pharmacologically validate and build upon these data are lacking.

North America is home to over 40 species of migratory waterfowl. Utilizing tissue and cloacal-swab sampling from hunter-harvested carcasses in 2021-2023, we identified circular DNA viruses associated with 116 waterfowl samples from nine species (American wigeons, Mexican ducks, northern shovelers, northern pintails, canvasbacks, mallards, American black ducks, gadwalls, and green-winged teals). We determined the genome sequences of viruses in the families Circoviridae (n = 18) and Hepadnaviridae (n = 2) from the 13 virus-infected birds.

Reproductive rights and reproductive justice paradigms have long been viewed as incompatible, largely because of their divergent orientations to the notion of choice. According to this oppositional framing, reproductive rights approaches have centered the right of (white, middle-class, heterosexual) women to choose not to have children while reproductive justice organizing has focused on gendered, racialized, and classed obstacles to control over whether and how to have and raise children. Amid increasing examination of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) vis-à-vis human rights principles, I see an opportunity to narrow the perceived gap between the politics of rights and justice.

Although the offshore water of Lake Michigan has been below the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA) total phosphorus (TP) spring target concentration of 7 μg L for several decades, higher TP concentrations occur in the nearshore, contributing to the resurgence of and other nutrient related issues. The most recent update of the GLWQA specifically calls for the assessment of current nearshore conditions. Such assessment would require an intensive monitoring program supported by water quality models.

Purpose: To determine if demographic factors and calculated areas of nonperfusion (NP) and neovascularization (NV) on ultra-widefield (UWF) fluorescein angiography (FA) in the eyes of patients with diabetes are associated with treatment with intravitreal injections (IVIs), panretinal photocoagulation (PRP), and diabetic retinopathy (DR) progression.

Patients And Methods: This retrospective, cross-sectional study included 363 patients (651 eyes) treated at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center between January 2009 and May 2018. Eligible participants were 18 years or older diagnosed with diabetes who received UWF FA.
