Insomnia is prevalent among patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD), potentially undermining treatment and increasing the risk of relapse. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the recommended first-line treatment for insomnia, but its efficacy is not well-characterized in patients across the spectrum of AUD. The aim of this meta-analysis was to quantify the effectiveness of CBT-I in improving insomnia severity and alcohol-related outcomes in adults with heavy alcohol use and/or varying levels of AUD severity and comorbid insomnia.

The blood-brain barrier is a physiological barrier that can prevent both small and complex drugs from reaching the brain to exert a pharmacological effect. This study assessed effectiveness of regulations reducing environmental butyltin concentrations in Southern Chesapeake Bay over the 1999-2021 period. Water column monitoring of the Elizabeth River from 1999 to 2006 demonstrated decreasing TBT from 2003 to 2006 (average >1 ng/L at most stations) to <1 ng L by 2019 but with higher concentrations of degradation products DBT and MBT. TBT degrades to DBT and MBT within sediments, and releases degradation products over time.

Due to its commercial availability and well-defined structure, the interaction between bovine protein β-lactoglobulin (βLG) and a wide variety of non-native ligands - including transition metal complexes - has been explored, but its application as an artificial metalloenzyme scaffold is limited. This protein is hypothesized to transport fatty acids and other nutrients during juvenile development, and it binds hydrophobic ligands inside a binding pocket constructed upon an 8-stranded β-barrel, called the 'calyx'. Preclinical studies have shown that the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) improves the anti-cancer effects of various therapeutic agents by impairing autophagy. These findings are difficult to translate in vivo as reaching an effective HCQ concentration at the tumor site for extended times is challenging. Previously, we found that free HCQ in combination with gefitinib (Iressa, ZD1839) significantly reduced tumor volume in immunocompromised mice bearing gefitinib-resistant JIMT-1 breast cancer xenografts.

Maize lethal necrosis (MLN) is a significant threat to food security in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), with limited commercial inbred lines displaying tolerance. This study analyzed the transcriptomes of four commercially used maize inbred lines and a non-adapted inbred line, all with varying response levels to MLN. RNA-Seq revealed differentially expressed genes in response to infection by maize chlorotic mottle virus (MCMV) and sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV), the causative agents of MLN.

Objective and continuous monitoring of Parkinson's disease (PD) tremor in free-living conditions could benefit both individual patient care and clinical trials, by overcoming the snapshot nature of clinical assessments. To enable robust detection of tremor in the context of limited amounts of labeled training data, we propose to use prototypical networks, which can embed domain expertise about the heterogeneous tremor and non-tremor sub-classes. We evaluated our approach using data from the Parkinson@Home Validation study, including 8 PD patients with tremor, 16 PD patients without tremor, and 24 age-matched controls.
