Structure-Activity Relationship of Pyrrolidine Pentamine Derivatives as Inhibitors of the Aminoglycoside 6'--Acetyltransferase Type Ib.

Antibiotics (Basel)

July 2024

Center for Applied Biotechnology Studies, Department of Biological Science, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, California State University Fullerton, Fullerton, CA 92831, USA.

Resistance to amikacin and other major aminoglycosides is commonly due to enzymatic acetylation by the aminoglycoside 6'--acetyltransferase type I enzyme, of which type Ib [AAC(6')-Ib] is the most widespread among Gram-negative pathogens. Finding enzymatic inhibitors could be an effective way to overcome resistance and extend the useful life of amikacin. Small molecules possess multiple properties that make them attractive for drug development.

Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) often targets the EEG-guided C3/C4 area that may not accurately represent M1 for hand muscles. This study aimed to determine if the neuroanatomy-based scalp acupuncture-guided site (AC) was a more effective spot than the C3 site for neuromodulation. Fifteen healthy subjects received one 20-minute session of high-definition transcranial alternating current stimulation (HD-tACS) intervention (20 Hz at 2 mA) at the AC or C3 sites randomly with a 1-week washout period.

Background: Traditional electrocardiography (ECG)-derived heart rate variability (HRV) and photoplethysmography (PPG)-derived "HRV" (termed PRV) have been reported interchangeably. Any potential dissociation between HRV and PRV could be due to the variability in pulse arrival time (PAT; time between heartbeat and peripheral pulse).

Objective: This study examined if PRV is equivalent to ECG-derived HRV and if PRV's innate error makes it a high-quality measurement separate from HRV.

Self-Incompatibility in Devil's Potato ( Jacq., Apocynaceae) May Explain Why Few Flowers Set Fruit.

Biology (Basel)

June 2024

Department of Biological Sciences, International Center for Tropical Botany, Institute of the Environment, Florida International University, Miami, FL 33199, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study investigated whether the plants are self-compatible or rely on cross-pollination, finding that self-pollination results in very low fruit set (9%), while cross-pollination between unrelated plants is most successful at setting fruit (59%).
  • * Results showed that self-pollinated fruits contained significantly fewer viable seeds compared to outcrossed ones, indicating that self-incompatibility may contribute to low fruit set in these plants, especially in fragmented habitats.

To better understand the long-term hand and shoulder outcomes of upper brachial plexus birth injuries.  We evaluated shoulder and hand function in 32 patients (13 males; 19 females) with a C5/C6 birth injury history). All patients had undergone primary nerve surgery as infants, and 12 underwent a simultaneous shoulder procedure as they presented with a fixed internal rotation contracture of the shoulder.

Background: Peripheral nerve stimulation with a train-of-four (TOF) pattern can be used intraoperatively to evaluate the depth of neuromuscular block and confirm recovery from neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs). Quantitative monitoring can be challenging in infants and children due to patient size, equipment technology, and limited access to monitoring sites. Although the adductor pollicis muscle is the preferred site of monitoring, the foot is an alternative when the hands are unavailable.
